An apparatus was developed to repetitively apply a $-196^{\circ}C$ thermal load to coupon-sized mechanical test specimens. Using this device, IM7/5250-4 (carbon / bismaleimide) cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates were submerged in liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) 400 times. Ply-by-ply micro-crack density, laminate modulus, and laminate strength were measured as a function of thermal cycles. Quasi-isotropic samples of IM7/977-3 (carbon / epoxy) composite were also manually cycled between liquid nitrogen and an oven set at $120^{\circ}C$ for 130 cycles to determine whether including elevated temperature in the thermal cycle significantly altered the degree or location of micro-cracking. In response to thermal cycling, both materials micro-cracked extensively in the surface plies fellowed by sparse cracking of the inner plies. The tensile modulus of the IM7/5250-4 specimens was unaffected by thermal cycling, but the tensile strength of two of the lay-ups decreased by as much as 8.5%.
Recently, natural fiber reinforced composite is attracting attention and considered as an environmentally friendly material. Usually cellulosic fibers are used to reinforce the composites, but some protein fibers such as silk and wool serve the same purpose. In this paper, we proposed a method of producing artistic composite from artistic fabric by using silk fiber reinforced biodegradable plastic, which is designated as 'silk composite', for reinforcement. In order to expand applications of the silk composite, we performed the compression molding of decorative laminates with woody material, which was selected as a core material, and examined the properties of molded decorative laminates with various content of the silk composite. Since plywood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) are widely used for decorative laminates, we selected them as core materials. As a result, flexible decorative laminates with high flexural strength were obtained by compounding the silk composite with wood materials.
During the curing process of thick glass/epoxy laminates, a substantial amount of temperature lag and overshoot at the center of the laminates is usually experienced due to the large thickness and low thermal conductivity of the glass/epoxy composites. Also, it takes a longer time for full and uniform consolidation. In this work, temperature, degree of cure and consolidation of a 20 mm thick unidirectional glass/epoxy laminate were investigated using an experiment and a 3-dimentional numerical analysis. From the experimental and numerical results, it was found that the experimentally obtained temperature profile agreed well with the numerical one, and the cure cycle recommended by the prepreg manufacturer should be modified to prevent a temperature overshoot and to obtain full consolidation.
In this paper, edge delaminations in cracked composite plates are analytically investigated. A theoretical model based upon a sub-laminate approach is used to determine the strain energy release rate, $G^{ed}$, in [$\pm$$\theta_m$/$90_n$]$_s$ carbon/epoxy laminates loaded in tension. The analysis provides closed-form expressions for the reduced stiffness due to edge delamination and matrix cracking and the total energy release rate. The parameters controlling the laminate behaviour are identified. It is shown that the available energy for edge delamination is increased notably due to transverse ply cracking. Also thermal stresses increase substantially the strain energy release rate and this effect is magnified by the presence of matrix cracking. Prediction for the edge delamination onset strain is presented and compared with experimental data. The analysis could be applied to ceramic matrix composite laminates where similar mechanisms develop, but further experimental evidence is required.

FRMLs consist of thin sheets of high strength metal, which are laminated using a structural adhesive and high strength fibers. ARALL(Aramid-fiber Reinforced Aluminum alloy Laminates) of FRMLs is a new class of hybrid material. HERALL(Heracron Reinforced Aluminum Laminate) i.e. domestic ARALL is made of homemade aramid fibers, adhesives and adhesive technique. Domestic aramid fiber is Heracron manufactured by KOLON and domestic adhesive is epoxy resin manufactured by Han Kuk Fiber. In this study, Fatigue crack propagation behavior was examined in a 2024-T3 aluminum alloy/aramid-fiber epoxy 3/2 laminated composites, HERALL and ARAL $L^{ⓡ}$-2 LAMINATE comparing with 2024-T3 aluminum alloy. The extrinsic toughening mechanisms in HERALL and ARALL were examined, the crack bridging behavior of fibers was analyzed by new algorithm, which measures crack bridging stress, and the crack bridging zone length was measured.

Electrical resistance change measurements were performed, to detect fatigue damage of a quasi-isotropic CFRP and cross-ply CFRP laminates. A four-probe method was used to measure the exact electrical resistance change. A three-probe method was used to measure the electrical contact resistance change, during long cyclic loading. The specimen side surface was observed using a video-microscope to detect damage. The measured electrical resistance changes were compared with the observed damage. The results of this study show that the electrical resistance increase of the quasi-isotropic laminate was caused by a delamination crack between ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ plies. Matrix cracking caused a small electrical resistance increase of the cross-ply laminate, but the decreased electrical resistance caused by the shear-plastic deformation impedes matrix-cracking detection.
When MWK (Multiaxial Warp Knitted Fabric) composites are applied for the structures, the connections of each component using mechanical fastening is needed. The local contact between the bolted joint and the composite laminates may induce high stress concentration or breakdown in the laminates for the mechanical joints. There for, it is strongly required to study the characteristics of mechanically joints of MWK composite laminates. In this study, stress analysis near the hole boundary of MWK composite laminate is conducted with various geometric factors under different loadings. In the case of multi-pin loaded MWK composite laminates, the results show that the types of loadings and geometric factors of mechanical joints have a significant influence on the joint performances.
In this paper, the fracture strength of the surface damaged laminates was predicted by applying the fracture strengths of the unflawed and flawed laminates. For prediction, the theoretical equation about the fracture strength of laminates was simplified applying classical laminate theory and was applied to the surface damaged laminates. Lagace's and Tsai's experimental data were used for verifying the theoretical equation. Moreover, to verify the theoretical prediction, an experiment was performed. Surface unflawed laminate and flawed laminates were fabricated and the experiments were made and these results were compared with theoretical predictions. The specimens' fiber direction was same to the tensile direction and the theoretical predictions and the experimental results were showed good agreement. Therefore, by this equation, the fracture strength of structures made of composites will be able to be predicted when the surface of the structures was damaged.
This paper demonstrates the analyses of the interlaminar shear stress of laminated composite plates subjected to transversely impact. For this purpose, a plate finite element model based on the higher order shear deformation plate theory in conjunction with static contact laws is developed. Test materials were CFRP with cross-ply laminate $[O_4/{\theta}_4]_S$, $[90_4/{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking sequences and angle-ply laminate $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$, $[{\theta}_4/-{\theta}_4]_S$ stacking deguences with $2^t{\times}40^w{\times}100^l(mm)$ dimension. As a result, stacking seguence and fiber orientation were found to have a significant effect on the interlaminar stresses in composite laminates.
