  • The present paper focuses on the analysis of aero-acoustics characteristic by several boundary conditions. In this simulation, a high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes are used for the accurate computation of compressible flow with several boundary conditions including characteristic boundary conditions as well as extrapolation and zonal characteristic boundary condition. These boundary conditions are applied to the computation of two dimensional circular cylinder flows with Mach number of 0.3 and Reynolds number of 400. The computation results are validated with measurement datum and other computation results for the Strouhal frequency of vortex shedding, the mean drag coefficient and root-mean-square lift for the unsteady periodic flow regime. Secondary frequency is predicted by three kinds of boundary conditions characteristic.

  • Natural convection within inclined high aspect-ratio rectangular cavity was analysed by using finite element method. For a cavity of sapect-ratio 20, the flow patterns of secondary vortices and the heat transfer characteristics on the wall were obtained with the variation of tilt angle as well as Ra and Pr. The observation on the governing equations shows that the increase of Ra/Pr and the existence of nonzero tilt angle make the flow pattern more complicated and so it becomes difficult to obtain converging solution. The max. value of Ra/Pr attained in this study was 3x10$\^$4/at 0$\^$0/ tilt angle and 1.1x10$\^$4/ at 45.deg. tilt angle for aspect ratio 20and Pr=0.7. Finally an empirical formula for Nusselt number which can accout for the effect of tilt angle is obtained for laminar flow regime.

  • In this paper, convective heat transfer and flow characteristics of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles suspended in water flowing through uniformly heated tubes are experimentally investigated under laminar flow regime. The heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop of nanoparticles suspended in water are experimentally presented according to the pumping power. In addition, the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop of $Al_2O_3$ nanoparticles suspended in water are compared with those of pure water under the fixed pumping power. It is shown that the heat transfer coefficient of $Al_2O_3$ nanofluids with 0.1% volume fraction is enhanced by about 12% although the increment of the pressure drop of those is 4% compared with those of pure water.

  • Stratified flow past a three-dimensional obstacle such as a sphere has been a long-lasting subject of geophysical, environmental and engineering fluid dynamics. In order to investigate the effect of the stratification on the near wake, in particular, the unsteady vortex formation behind a sphere, numerical simulations of stratified flows past a sphere are conducted. The time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations are solved using a three-dimensional finite element method and a modified explicit time integration scheme. Laminar flow regime is considered and linear stratification of density is assumed under Boussinesq approximation. The computed results include the characteristics of the near wake and the unsteady vortex shedding. With a strong stratification, the separation on the sphere is suppressed and the wake structure behind the sphere becomes planar, resembling that behind a vertical cylinder.

  • Printed circuit heat exchangers (PCHEs) are widely used with an increasing demand for industrial applications. PCHEs are capable of operating at high temperatures and pressure. We consider a PCHE as a candidate intermediate heat exchanger type for a high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR). For conventional application using stainless steels, design and manufacturing of PCHEs are well established. For applications to HTGR, knowledge of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel is required to estimate design margin. This paper analyzes the effects of longitudinal conduction and deformation of channel on thermal performance using a code internally developed for design and analysis of PCHEs. The code has a capability of two dimensional simulations. Longitudinal conduction is estimated using the code. In HTGR operating condition, about ten percent of design margin is required to compensate thermal performance. The cross-sectional images of PCHE channels are obtained using an optical microscope. The images are processed with computer image process technique. We quantify the deformation of channel with dimensional parameters. It is found that the deformation has negative effect on structural integrity. The deformation enhances thermal performance when the shape of channel is straight in laminar flow regime. It reduces thermal performance in cases of a zigzag channel and turbulent flow regime.

  • A numerical study for a two dimensional multi-jet with crossflow of the spent fluid has been carried out. Three different distributions of mass-flow rate at 5 jet exits were assumed to see their effects upon the flow characteristics, especially in the jet-flow region. For each distribution, various Reynolds numbers ranging from laminar to turbulent flows were considered. Calculations drew the following items as conclusion. 1) The development of the free jets issued from downstream jets was hindered by the crossflow formed due to jets. Consequently, the free jet was developed into the channel flow without any evident symptom of impingement jet flow characteristics 2) The crossflow induced the pressure gradient along the cross section of jet exits and the value of the pressure gradient increased as going downstream. The crossflow generated also the turbulent kinetic energy as it collied with the downstream jets. 3) The skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was affected more by the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits rather than by the Reynolds number. The skin friction coefficient was inversely proportional to the square root of the Reynolds number, regardless of flow regime when a fully developed flow was formed in the jet flow region. 4) The distribution of the skin friction coefficient along the impingement plate was found to be controlled by adjusting the distribution of mass flow rate at jet exits.

  • In the present study, effects of tree-stream turbulence and surface trip wire on the flow past a sphere at $Re\;=\;0.4\;{\times}\;10^5\;{\sim}\;2.8\;{\times}\;10^5$ are investigated through wind tunnel experiments. Various types of grids are installed upstream of the sphere in order to change the tree-stream turbulence intensity. In the case of surface trip wire, 0.5mm and 2mm trip wires are attached from $20^{\circ}\;{\sim}\;90^{\circ}$ at $10^{\circ}$ interval along the streamwise direction. To investigate the flow around a sphere, drag measurement using a load cell, surface-pressure measurement, surface visualization using oil-flow pattern and near-wall velocity measurement using an I-type hot-wire probe are conducted. In the variation of free-stream turbulence, the critical Reynolds number decreases and drag crisis occurs earlier with increasing turbulence intensity. With increasing Reynolds number, the laminar separation point moves downstream, but the reattachment point after laminar separation and the main separation point are fixed, resulting in constant drag coefficient at each free-stream turbulence intensity. At the supercritical regime, as Reynolds number is further increased, the separation bubble is regressed but the reattachment and the main separation points are fixed. In the case of surface trip wire directly disturbing the boundary layer flow, the critical Reynolds number decreases further with trip wire located more downstream. However, the drag coefficient after drag crisis remains constant irrespective of the trip location.

  • An analysis is performed to study flow and heat transfer characteristics of mixed free and forced convection about a sphere. Nonsimilar boundary layer equations which are valid over the entire regime of mixed convection are derived in terms of the mixed convection parameter, Gr/Re$^{2}$, through a dimensional analysis. The transformed conservation equations are solved by a finite difference method for the whole range of mixed convection regime. Numerical results for fluids having the Prandtl number 0.7 and 7 are presented. As the mixed convection parameter increases, the local friction coefficient and local heat transfer coefficient increases as well. For small Prandtl number, the friction coefficient is larger, while for large Prandtl number, the heat transfer coefficient is larger. Natural convection effect on the forced flow is more sensitive for small Prandtl number fluid. Flow separation migrates rearward as an increase in the mixed convection parameter. For small Prandtl number, the buoyancy effect is relatively small so that the flow separation occurs earlier.

  • A method is developed to include the effect of volume expansion in the description of the flame dynamics using G-equation. Line volume-source is used to represent the effect of the exothermic process of combustion with source strength assigned by the density difference between the burned and the unburned region. The present model provides good agreement with the experimental results by using realistic volume expansion ratio which was not reached in the previous researches. Including volume expansion, the flow predicts the same behavior of measured velocity field qualitatively. The flame propagation in varying flow field due to volume expansion provides a promising way to represent the wrinkled turbulent premixed flames in a numerically efficient manner.

  • Characteristics of turbulent lifted flames in coflow jet have been investigated by varying initial temperature through the heating of coflow air. In the turbulent regime, liftoff height increases linearly with fuel jet velocity and decreases nonlinearly as the coflow temperature increases. This can be attributed to the increase of turbulent propagation speed, which is strongly related to laminar burning velocity. Dimensionless liftoff heights are correlated well with dimensionless jet velocity, which are scaled with parameters determining local flow velocity and turbulent propagation speed. This implies that the turbulent lifted flames are stabilized by balance mechanism between local turbulent burning velocity and flow velocity. Blowout velocity can be obtained from the ratio of mixing time to chemical time. Comparing to previous researches, thermal diffusivity should be evaluated from the initial temperature instead of adiabatic flame temperature.
