  • In the last few years, lasers have found new applications as tools for ceramic machining which is laser-assisted machining(LAM). LAM process for the machining of difficult-to-machine materials such as structural ceramics, has recently been studied on silicon nitride workpiece for a wide range of operating condition. However, there have been few studies on rake angle in LAM process. In this paper we analyzed difference of machinability between positive and negative rake angle in tools. We have obtained interesting results that we could eliminate chattering, lower specific cutting and cutting ratio in case of positive rake angle. The results suggest that positive rake angled tools can make more plastic deformation and stable cutting of silicon nitride in comparison with negative rake angled one.

  • LAMS(learning activity management system)[1] is one of the useful tools for designing and managing effectively the learning activities such as web search, chat, forum, grouping, and board. Even if LAMS has been upgraded to support the methods for making e-Learning contents conveniently, it does not have a method to communicate with external educational contents (EEC) made by external tools like Flash, Java, Visual C++, and so on. LAMS, which has been operated on Web environment, should manage all EECs like video and dynamic educational contents as educational contents in LAMS database. However, the current LAMS does not support the functionalities which can provide information of EECs to LAMS database and can also access any information about EECs from the database yet. In this paper, we propose the communication mechanism between the LAMS and EECs for solving the problem. In special, the mechanism makes many statistical data by using the information, and provides them for reflecting in education, and can control various learning management that was impossible under the original LAMS. Based on the proposed mechanism, teachers using LAMS can make more various educational contents and can manage them in the system.

  • Lamellarin D (LamD) is a marine alkaloid with a pronounced cytotoxicity against a large panel of cancer cells, affecting cell growth and inducing apoptosis. However, the molecular mechanisms of action of this compound are poorly understood. In this study, the anticancer efficacy of LamD was investigated in human leukemia K562 cells. The results showed suppressed cell proliferation and induction of G0/G1-phase arrest, while expression of CDK1, and activity of smad3 and smad5 were reduced, but that of p27, p53 and STGC3 was increased. LamD induced cell apoptosis through activation of caspases-8/-3, inhibition of survivin and Bcl-2, suggesting that this compound may also act through a caspase-independent pathway. Moreover, LamD inhibited the secretion of TGF-${\beta}$, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, IL-8 and other inflammatory cytokines and the transcriptional activity of transcription factor NF-${\kappa}B$ in human leukemia K562 cells.Taken together, our results suggest that LamD-mediated inhibition of leukemia cell proliferation may be related to the induction of apoptosis and the regulation of cell cycle, tumor-related gene expression and cytokine expression, which may provide a new way of thinking for the treatment leukemia.

  • A water soluble antifungal antibiotic, Solumycin, was separated from the culture broth of Streptomyces sp. LAM-593, isolated from soil, by butanol extraction, alumina-, 1st and 2nd Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. The substance was pale yellow crystal which gave a single spot at Rf value 0.24 with ethanol-ammonia water-water (8:1:1), 0.46 with butanol-ethanol-water (5:1:4), 0.84 with 50% methanol on silica gel TLC. It was dissolved well in water, methanol and acidic aq. butanol but not in ethanol, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform. acetic acid etc., and gave positive Fehling and Molish reaction. The UV spectrum in methanol showed absorption at 342, 361, 380, and 404 nm. The antibiotic was active against fungi such as Candide, Cryptococcus, Saccharomyces, Trichophyton and Trichosporon, but not to bacteria such as Bacillus, Escherichia and Staphylococcus.

  • Laser assisted machining (LAM) is machining method that performs a machining for workpieces using laser beam preheating. LAM is in the early stage of its applications and has only been used in limited fields including turning, planning and micro end-milling throughout the world. LAM system should be able to move to the laser radiation direction and to rotate on a tool path for machining of complex shapes. A laser module with two-axis manipulator is designed in this study. It has been performed static structural analysis and shape modification of the manipulator. As the results of shape modification it has been obtained better results than the initial model. These results will be able to use in development of the two-axis manipulator.

  • Karst in Korean peninsula is not widely known. Since karst studies had been initiated a few hundred years ago based on the historic records “Dong Guck Ye Jee Seoung Lam” and “Sae Jong Sill Rok Gee Ri Jee” (1993, Oh), modern caverns during the 60s have inactively started to search on the karst phenomena to the eastern mountaineious areas.(omitted)
