  • The Galerkin formulation of the finite element method is applied to the integral law of the first-order form of the one-group neutron transport equation in one-dimensional spherical geometry. Piecewise linear or quadratic Lagrange polynomials are utilized in the integral law for the angular flux to establish a set of linear algebraic equations. Numerical analyses are performed for the scalar flux distribution in a heterogeneous sphere as well as for the criticality problem in a uniform sphere. For the criticality problems in the uniform sphere, the results of the finite element method, with the use of continuous finite elements in space and angle, are compared with the exact solutions. In the heterogeneous problem, the scalar flux distribution obtained by using discontinuous angular and spatical finite elements is in good agreement with that from the ANISN code calculation.

  • It is of great significance to utilize a landing mechanism to explore an asteroid. A landing mechanism named ALISE (Asteroid Landing and In Situ Exploring) for asteroid with soft surface is presented. The landing dynamic in the first turning stage, which represents the landing performance of the landing mechanism, is built by a Lagrange equation. Three key parameters can be found influencing the landing performance: the retro-rocket thrust T, damping element damping $c_1$, and cardan element damping $c_2$. In this paper, the retro-rocket thrust T is solved with considering that the landing mechanism has no overturning in extreme landing conditions. The damping element damping c1 is solved by a simplified dynamic model. After solving the parameters T and $c_1$, the cardan element damping $c_2$ is calculated using the landing dynamic model, which is built by Lagrange equation. The validities of these three key parameters are tested by simulation. The results show a stable landing, when landing with the three estimated parameters T, $c_1$, and $c_2$. Therefore, the landing dynamic model and methods to estimate key parameters are reasonable, and are useful for guiding the design of the landing mechanism.

  • The vergence control of binocular stereoscopic camera is the most essential factor for acquiring high quality stereoscopic images. In this paper, we proposed a binocular stereoscopic camera vergence control method using disparity information by the simple image processing and estimate the quantity of vergence control using the Lagrange interpolation equation. The method of extracting disparity information through image processing is as follows: first the key-object in left & right images was extracted through labeling of the central area of the image, and then a simple method was used for calculating the disparity value of the same key-object in the labeled left and right images. The vergence control method uses disparity information and keeps the convergence distance of left & right cameras and the distance of the key-object the same. According to the proposed method, variance in the distance of the key-object and application of calculated disparity information of obtained left & right images to the quadratic Lagrange interpolation equation could estimate the quantity of vergence control, which confirmed that the method of stereoscopic camera vergence control can be simplified through experiments on various key-objects and other convergence distance.

  • By virtue of an application of the receptance method, simplified formulae to calculate natural frequencies of stiffened plates having a resiliently mounted or concentrated mass are obtained. Some numerical results are compared with those based on Lagrange's equation of motion and with experimental results. For the problem formulation the stiffened plate is reduced to an equivalent orthotropic plate, a resiliently mounted mass to a spring-mass system, and mode shapes of the plate are assumed with comparison functions consisting of Euler beam functions. The proposed formulae give results in good conformity to both numerical results based on Lagrange's equation of motion and experimental results for in-phase modes of the coupled system. For out-of-phase modes the conformity is assured only in case that the natural frequency of the attached system is less than a half of that the stiffened plate. It is also found that a resiliently mounted mass having its own natural frequency of about two or more times that of the stiffened plate can be reduced to a concentrated mass with assurance of a few percent error in the frequency.

  • An approximate method based on an assumed mode method has been presented for the free vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with arbitrary edge constraints. In the presented method, natural frequencies and their mode shapes of the plate are calculated by solving an eigenvalue problem of a multi-degree-of-freedom system matrix equation derived by using Lagrange's equations of motion. Characteristic orthogonal polynomials having the property of Timoshenko beam functions which satisfies edge constraints corresponding to those of the objective plate are used. In order to examine the accuracy of the proposed method, numerical examples of the rectangular plates with various thicknesses and edge constraints have been presented. The results have shown good agreement with those of other methods such as an analytic solution, an approximate solution, and a finite element analysis.

  • In this paper, geometric nonlinear bending characteristics of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced composite (SWCNTRC) doubly curved shell panels subjected to uniform transversely loadings are investigated. The nonlinear mathematical model is developed for doubly curved SWCNTRC shell panel on the basis of higher-order shear deformation theory and Green- Lagrange nonlinearity. All nonlinear higher order terms are included in the mathematical model. The effective material properties of SWCNTRC are estimated by using Eshelby-Mori-Tanaka micromechanical approach. The governing equation of the shell panel is obtained using the total potential energy principle and a Newton-Raphson iterative method is employed to compute the nonlinear displacement and stresses. The present results are compared with published literature. The effect of SWCNT volume fraction, width-to-thickness ratio, radius-to-width ratio (R/a), boundary condition, linear and nonlinear deflection, stresses and different types of shell geometry on nonlinear bending response is investigated.

  • Numerical analysis of large amplitude free vibration behaviour of laminated composite spherical shell panel embedded with the piezoelectric layer is presented in this article. For the investigation purpose, a general nonlinear mathematical model has been developed using higher order shear deformation mid-plane kinematics and Green-Lagrange nonlinearity. In addition, all the nonlinear higher order terms are included in the present mathematical model to achieve any general case. The nonlinear governing equation of freely vibrated shell panel is obtained using Hamilton's principle and discretised using isoparametric finite element steps. The desired nonlinear solutions are computed numerically through a direct iterative method. The validity of present nonlinear model has been checked by comparing the responses to those available published literature. In order to examine the efficacy and applicability of the present developed model, few numerical examples are solved for different geometrical parameters (fibre orientation, thickness ratio, aspect ratio, curvature ratio, support conditions and amplitude ratio) with and/or without piezo embedded layers and discussed in details.

  • In this paper, we propose a linear modeling and identical PD controller design scheme for the three-pole hybrid-type AMB recently developed in the laboratory, which consists of three permanent magnets, providing bias flux, three Hall diodes, measuring rotor displacements, and ring type permanent magnet bearing, stabilizing in axial and tilting directions. Along the three physical coordinates formed by three poles, we introduce the redundant coordinate system and three identical decoupled controllers to construct linear model. The experiments are also carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of proposed controller in stabilizing the transient and steady state response of rotor.

  • In this study, an axi-symmetric finite element program for elastic analysis of the die set shrink fitted in cold extrusion was developed. The geometrical constraint according to shrink fit was enforced by employing the Lagrange multiplier method. The numerical results for strain and stress distributions in the die set including single and multi stress rings assembled by shrink fit were compared well with the Lame's equation for thick-walled solution available in the literature. To extend the applicability of the analysis program developed, various cases without or with stress ring and with pre-stress applied on stress ring were numerically investigated as well. This numerical approach enables the optimization study to determine optimal dimensions of die set to improve tool life for practical use in industry.
