The genus Lactococcus is a gram-positive, catalase-negative, non-motile bacterium. It is a facultative anaerobe and can be cultured at 10~40℃. The genus Lactococcus consists of 16 species, of which Lactococcus garvieae and Lactococcus lactis are known to cause disease in humans. This study reports the first case in which L. garvieae was identified in the urine culture of a 74-year-old woman. The patient confirmed the findings of acute urinary tract infection through blood tests, microbial identification tests, antibiotic susceptibility tests, and computed tomography performed at a hospital. The patient was admitted to the nephrology ward and was treated with IV fluids and erythromycin antibiotics and discharged 5 days later. This is the first case in Korea in which L. garvieae was isolated from the urine of a patient with a urinary tract infection and is expected to be useful in treating patients with L. garvieae infection in the future.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the microbiological characteristics and the distributions of the bacteria causing streptococcicosis occurred in marine fish farm, Korea. Many kinds of cultures fishes suffered from the disease accompanied with typical symptoms, including darkening of the skin, exophthalmia, petechiae inside of the opercula and distended abdomen. The isolates from the diseased fishes were compared with Lactococcus garvieae by biochmical, biophysical and serological methods and polymerase chain reaction(PCR) assay. We isolated 35 strains of the geuns Streptococcus from the diseased olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, yellow tail, Seriola quinqueradiata and Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli. 15 strains out of the isolates were identified to L. garvieae and the others were not because of their different biochemical and biophysical charateristics. Seven strains of the isolates were agglutinated by rabbit serum raised against L. garvieae $KG^+$ phenotypic cells(ATCC49156)as a reference strain. Twenty-one strains of the isolates identified to L. garvieae since they were formed the expected band through performing PCR assay using specific primers, pLG-1(5'-CATAACAATGAGATCGC-3') and pLG-2(5'-GCACCCCGCGGTTG-3'). In the present study, it showed that L. garvieae was a dominant strain causing streptococcicosis in the tested area due to occurrence of 21 strains as L. garvieae out of all the isolates, 9 atrains as Streptococcus sp. and 5 strains as Enterococcus sp.

Red lip mullet Chelon haematocheilus (body weight = $468{\pm}91g$) which became sick during an outbreak of disease at mariculture facilities at Cheonsu Bay, Korea, during July-August 2013, were examined to identify the cause of the disease. Diseased mullets displayed green liver syndrome, and Lactococcus garvieae were isolated from their internal organs. Argulus sp., Trichodina sp., and/or Vibrio spp. were also discovered in some infected fish. Histopathological examination revealed that fatty liver syndrome with hepatocyte degeneration, reflected in heterokaryons, inflammatory lesions, and melanomacrophage centers ($MMC_S$), had caused fibrosis around the kidney, spleen, and blood vessels. After the outbreak, visceral fat and green liver syndrome in the mullets were consistently observed throughout the year in the same mariculture facilities, indicating that the cultured mullets suffered a chronic metabolic disorder. Although Vibrio spp. were also isolated from some individuals, L. garvieae, which is known to be a causative agent of red lip mullet mortality, was isolated from all diseased individuals. This is the first report of L. garvieae infection in cultured red lip mullet.
Temperate phages were effectively induced from presumptive lysogenized cells of 96 strains out of 111 strains of L. garvieae No. 44 strains (phage type B) as the host cell. Similar cultures in distilled water-based TSB did not induce lytic infection in these cells. These temperate phages were also effectively induced by ultraviolet irradiation. All phages isolated were lytic only to L. garvieae No. 44 strain and the lytic nature was different from those of PLgY, PLgW, and PLgS. The virions appeared extracellularly after 1h of induction culture and increased in number until reaching the maximum of $10^6$ PFU/ml after 12h. This phage production was lower than that ($10^{10}$ PFU/ml) of the virulent phage.

Background: Lactococcus garvieae is one of the most important risk factors in the rainbow trout culture. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to identify and detect strains isolated from rainbow trout suspected of having Lactococcus garvieae using biochemical characteristics and PCR and determination of the degree of severity of isolated strains. Methods: In this study, the cause of lactococcosis in selected rainbow trout farms in Kohkilooieh and Boyerahmad province was assayed. Gram-positive and catalase-negative bacterial isolates were first obtained from selected trout fish farms using conventional biochemical tests and PCR assay. The 10-day LD50 method (concentration causing 50% mortality in 10 days) was used to determine the severity of the isolated bacteria. Results: One bacterial isolate was detected from all sampled fish which confirmed as Lactococcus garvieae using a specific PCR assay based on the 16S rDNA gene by producing a single band of 1107 bp. Analysis of the rate of mortality showed that the 10-day LD50 was 4.6 × 105 CFU/fish. The results of this study showed that isolated bacteria had high severity for rainbow trout. The presence of bacteria in internal organs of suspected fish showed a severe systemic infection in challenged fish. Antibiogram assay also indicated that the isolated Lactococcus garvieae were resistant to some mostly used antibiotics in rainbow trout. Conclusions: According to current research, it can be concluded that the condition of lactococcosis in the studied area is not suitable, and despite the presence of disease, there is no proper action to control and prevent the disease. Unfortunately, isolated bacteria from the studied area have a very high severity compared to bacteria isolated from other regions of the country or other countries. Therefore, further investigation is needed to determine the cause of this difference and possibly in the design of the vaccine.
A lactic acid bacterium capable of anaerobic respiration was isolated from soil with ferric iron-containing glucose basal medium and identified as L. garvieae by using 16S rDNA sequence homology. The isolate reduced ferric iron, nitrate, and fumarate to ferrous iron, nitrite, and succinate, respectively, under anaerobic $N_2$ atmosphere. Growth of the isolate was increased about 30-39% in glucose basal medium containing nitrate and fumarate, but not in the medium containing ferric iron. Specifically, metabolic reduction of nitrate and fumarate is thought to be controlled by the specific genes fnr, encoding FNR-like protein, and nir, regulating fumarate-nitrate reductase. Reduction activity of ferric iron by the isolate was estimated physiologically, enzymologically, and electrochemically. The results obtained led us to propose that the isolate metabolized nitrate and fumarate as an electron acceptor and has specific enzymes capable of reducing ferric iron in coupling with anaerobic respiration.
This review is about current Streptococcosis of cultured olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus, in South Korea. The main bacterial species are Streptococcus iniae, S. parauberis and Lactococcus garvieae. The occurrence trend has been arranged with published data and seed bank (NIFS) data that was examined with deposited strains and the number from 2002 to 2017. S. iniae and L. garvieae were collected until 2012 and 2002, respectively, but not collected any more after that year. In recent years, the dominant strain of Streptococcosis of cultured olive flounder is S. parauberis. The phenotypic and genetic characteristics of standard strains and isolated strains were examined with published paper. Notably, we describe about distinguishing gross signs and histological signs of 3 types of Streptococcosis in this report. White turbidity of eye, hemorrhage, enteritis and ascites are main signs of S. iniae infection. Darkness of body surface, hemorrhage in somatic muscle and pericarditis are predominant in occasion S. parauberis infection. In occasion of L. garvieae infection, common signs of Streptococcosis are revealed, but these are weak tendency compared with the previous two cases.
In this study, we examined in vitro antimicrobial activity of the hydrolysis compound (MBT-01108) of cactus stem (Opuntia ficus-indica var. saboten Makino) against 18 strains of fish pathogenic bacteria, Edwardsiella tarda, Listonella anguillarum, Vibrio sp., Lactococcus garvieae, L. raffinose, Streptococcus parauberis and S. iniae. Antibiotic susceptibility of the same bacteria was also assayed to commercial discs containing various antibacterials. According to these results, MBT-01108 showed the excellent antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogenic bacteria.
