  • Galvanic current measurement, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and weight loss test were used to study the corrosion behavior of carbon steel before and after carbon fibers coupling to the carbon steel in simulated concrete pore solutions, and the film composition on the steel surface was analyzed using XPS method. The results indicate that passive film on steel surface had excellent protective property in pore solutions with different pH values (13.3, 12.5 and 11.6). After coupling with carbon fibers (the area ratio of carbon steel to carbon fiber was 12.31), charge transfer resistance $R_{ct}$ of the steel surface decreased and the $Fe^{3+}/Fe^{2+}$ value in passive film decreased. As a result, stability of the film decreased and the corrosion rate of steel increased. Decreasing of the area ratio of steel to carbon fiber from 12.3 to 6.15 resulted in the decrease in $R_{ct}$ and the increase in corrosion rate. Especially in the pore solution with pH 11.6, the coupling leads the carbon steel to corrode easily.

  • Recent construction activities and maintenance of marine facilities have been accelerating to keep up with rapid economic growth in Korea. Marine concrete structures are exposed to salts an chloride from ocean environments. The corrosion of reinforcement steel caused by chloride-penetration into concrete may severely effect the durability of concrete structures. The objective of this research is to develop a durable concrete by investigating the corrosion resistance of various corrosion protection systems utilizing different water/cement ratio, silica fumes, corrosion inhibitors and etc. A tow-year verification test on various corrosion protection systems has been doing in the laboratory and at the seaside. Corrosion investigations on reinforcement steel are now under progress for more than 180 concrete specimen. Corrosion-related measurements include macrocell corrosion current, instant-off voltage between corroding and noncorroding reinforcement, chloride contents, the corroded surface areas on the reinforcement steel, and etc. A low level of corrosion is investigated on reinforcement steels in concrete specimen made with corrosion inhibitors or applied aqueous impregnating corrosion inhibitors into their surface, even though high chloride contents of concrete specimen.

  • This paper is focused on fractal analysis of the surface cracking, a new tool for safety evaluation of corroded reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Comprehensive experimental investigations, including flexural tests, coupon tests on strength evaluation of corroded concrete and rusty rebar, and pullout tests to determine bond strength between concrete and rebar were carried out on nine Corroded Reinforced Concrete Beams (CRCB) exposed to an aggressive environment for more than 10 years. In combination with test results from a previous study on CRCBs fabricated in the laboratory from accelerated methods, it is found that, for both types of beams, the surface cracking distributions are fractal in character at loading and failure stages. Fractal dimension is calculated for all specimens at different corrosion states based on fractal analysis method. Relationships between the fractal dimension and mechanical properties of corroded concrete, rebar corrosion ratio, and ductility of CRCBs are discussed in detail. It is concluded that the fractal dimension can act as a damage index and can be efficiently used to describe the corrosion state of CRCBs.

  • Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) was suspected in a corrosion failure of cooling system of stainless piping welded joint, carrying marine water. Marine water which is used for cooling water in a plant was transferred to the laboratory and used for experiment. In the first experiment, weld metal samples were exposed to the test solution for 56 days (marine water and sterilized marine water (control)). Surface condition of experimental coupons was observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). In another experiment, free corrosion potential of these material was monitored for 56 days. Pitting corrosion was found in the coupons exposed to marine water. Free corrosion potential ennoblement was found to be significant compared to control. It was suspected that this corrosion case was MIC. In the second experiment, coupons were exposed to diluted nutrient medium containing single culture of microbes isolated from the MIC causing marine water sample used for the first experiment. After exposure test, surface condition of experimental coupon was observed using SEM. Pitting corrosion was found in coupons exposed to some of the isolates. The results indicate that they contribute to the corrosive effect of the SUS316L welds.

  • This paper reports the results of an experimental program involving several small-scale columns which were constructed to simulate corrosion damage in the field using two accelerated corrosion techniques namely, constant voltage and constant current. A total of six columns were cast for this experiment. For one pair of regular RC columns, corrosion was accelerated using constant voltage and for another pair, corrosion was accelerated using constant current. The remaining pair of regular RC columns was used as control. In the experiment, all the columns were subjected to cyclic wetting and drying using sodium chloride (NaCl) solution. The currents were monitored on an hourly interval and cracks were visually checked throughout the test program. After the specimens had suffered sufficient percentage steel loss, all the columns including the control were tested to failure in compression. The test results generated show that accelerated corrosion using impressed constant current produces more corrosion damage than that using constant voltage. The results suggest that the constant current approach can be better used to simulate corrosion damage of reinforced concrete structures and to assess the effectiveness of various materials, repair strategies and admixtures to resist corrosion damage.

  • Recently, waste landfills built on seashores have been increased because of the easy availability of broad area near the urban communities. To evaluate the performance of the marine clay landfill liner numerical contaminant transport analyses are performed by selecting the typical section of a waste landfill built on seashores and using hydraulic conductivity data obtained from the site. Also, the laboratory electrical resistivity test and the in-situ corrosion test are performed in order to analyze the influence of the soil and leachates composing the landfills on the construct ion materials. From the results of contaminant transport analyses, it is shown that the leachates can be migrated faster through narrow pervious channels than the wide homogeneous pervious tedium and the importance of good quality barriers to prevent the contaminant migration is recognized. In the laboratory electrical resistivity test all the earth materials except the cover soils saturated with distilled water have small resistivities, which shows a high potential of corrosivity of soils composing landfills. However, the degree of corrosion of specimens buried in the landfills was not so severe except the zinc and carbon steel specimens. This apparently conflict results present the necessity of the investigation of other major factors and the long term in-situ corrosion test.

  • This paper describes the exfoliation and surface modification of muscovite mica for UV coating formulation. For the exfoliation of the mica, hydrothermal process was used in the presence of lithium nitrate ($LiNO_3$). After the cation exchange with $Li^+$ ions, the surface of the mica was modified with several amphiphilic substances to increase compatibility and storage stability in UV coating formulation. Such a hydrophobic surface modification affected colloidal stability as well as dispersibility of the exfoliated mica in UV coating solution. Anticorrosive property of mica/UV coated steel plates was tested by salt spray test (SST) and compared with sodium montmorillonite ($Na^+$-MMT)/UV coated steel plates.

  • The effect of various pH agents on the corrosion behavior of carbon steel was investigated under a simulated secondary water chemistry condition of a pressurized water reactor (PWR) in a laboratory, and the steel's corrosion performance was compared with the field data obtained from Uljin NPP unit 2 reactor. All tests were carried out at temperatures of $50^{\circ}C-250^{\circ}C$and pH of 8.5 - 10. The pH at a given temperature was controlled by adding different agents. Laboratory data indicate that the corrosion rate of carbon steel decreased as the pH increased under the test conditions and the highest corrosion rate was measured at $150^{\circ}C$. This high corrosion rate may be related to high dissolution and instability of Fe oxide ($Fe_3O_4$) at $150^{\circ}C$. It was also found that an addition of ethanolamine (ETA) to ammonia was more effectivefor anticorrosion than ammonia alone, and that mixed treatment reduced 50% of iron or more at pHs of 9.5 or higher, especially in the steam generator (SG) and the moisture separator & re-heater (MSR).

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking of steam generator tubings occur on many tubes in pressurized water reactors(PWRs), and they are repaired using sleeves or plugs. In order to develop proper repair criteria, it is necessary to know the leak behavior of the tubes, which have stress corrosion cracks. Crack development tests were carried out on the tubes at room temperature, and leak rate and burst pressure were measured on the degraded tubes at room temperature and a high temperature. No leakage was detected on the tubes where 100 % through wall crack developed, at 1560 psi, which is an operating pressure difference of pressurized water reactors(PWRs). In some tests, leak rates of the tubes increased with time at a constant internal water pressure. A test tube showed a very small amount of leakage at 2700 psi in a high temperature pressure test at $282^{\circ}C$, but it disappeared after the pressure increased slightly. Even cracks are 100 % through wall, they need to open in order to reach a certain amount of leak rate at the operating pressure difference.
