A Study on the Abstraction of Movements Based on Laban's Space Theory "Choreutics" (라반의 공간조화이론 "코레우틱스(Choreutics)"를 활용한 움직임의 추상적 시각화 연구)

  • This paper presents a methodology for creating abstract animation based on the human movement theories originating from the work of dance theorist Rudolf von Laban. Laban Movement Analysis is a method and language for describing, visualizing, interpreting and documenting all varieties of human movement, and Choreutics is based on universal patterns of nature and of human as part of a universal design. Laban defines the space of movements in a profoundly dualistic way. Outwardly, his objective and scientific definitions provide a concrete base for generating human movements in computer graphics in terms of geometric and motion primitives such as points, lines, planes, polygons, linear and nonlinear movements. On the other hand, he also offers a system for understanding the subtle characteristics about the way a movement is dynamically done with respect to inner intention. Laban's interpretations of human motion can be utilized potentially in plastic arts and computer arts. Our work was inspired by those physical and psychological analyses and computer algorithms have been developed for creating abstract animation. We presented our computer animation works entitled "Choreography" in the exhibitions: a special section in "2015 Craft Trend Fair" and "Make Your Movement" held in the Korean Cultural Centre in UK, 2016. In this paper, we describe our ideas and methods for creating abstract object movements based on the Laban's motion representations.

  • The Golden Dragon is a work that reminds us of the tragic illusion of globalization through the story of Asian workers' lives in Berlin, a strange city. Also, the post-epic nature of the play requires the audience to see it in a new way, more different than before. In Korea, there are theoretical studies on the post-epic theatre, but there is little research on specific acting approaches based on practical production process. Therefore, I first analyze the post-epic characteristics of The Golden Dragon in order to present specific acting approaches. As a result, it would be confirmed that body-centered acting approaches were required in the post-epic theatre to play more different roles than in the realism play. Thus, Laban movement Analysis(LMA) of Rudolf von Laban is applied so that internal impulses could be naturally induced through the utilization of the body. Of the four categories of motion(BESS), Laban seeks to look at the body-centered acting approaches through the effort. Finally, it must be confirmed through the actual production process that Laban's theory of motion could be used as a body-centered acting approach to creating the role of post-epic theatre.

  • The core of Laban Movement Analysis, which is used for academic research purposes, is that the individual's psychological or emotional state through movement is expressed in external motion by internal intention, which is symbolic of internal emotions. In addition, the Laban motion analysis focuses on analyzing the structure of the object of movement and its structure comparatively and analytically with the past or other structures, and the analyzed grammars of the dance ultimately influence each other in psychological, social and cultural aspects 'Relationality' provides clues to be found. It also provides a resource of records in terms of the system implied from the 'momentary nature' of dance, which has educational value as a multidisciplinary research material.

Measuring Tensions of Character Motions based on LMA (LMA를 기반으로 한 캐릭터 동작의 긴장도 측정)

  • In this paper, we propose the method to measure tensions of character motions, using LMA (Laban Movement Analysis). Using tension values, we tan take advantage of them as a standard for synchronization of motion and BGM(Back Ground Music). In LMA, a motion is divided into 4 space-time factors which are called Efforts, and each Effort has two bases opposed to each other. We can analyze the motion by justifying which basis is stronger than the other in each Effort of motion. To measure quantitatively tension values, we propose some equations based on kinematics and dynamics. Then we can measure the tension value by the weighted sum of values calculated from those equations. Each weight can be determined by the optimization process which tries to minimize the difference between the calculated tension value and human's decision. The experimental result shows that the in creasing order of the motion tension value is similar to that of the tension score given by human.

  • 본 연구는 Laban이 제시한 모션 분석 기법을 이용하여 모션의 긴장도를 측정하는 방법을 제안한다. 이러한 긴장도값을 이용하면 캐릭터 모션과 배경음악간의 자동적 동기화를 위한 기준값으로 사용할 수 있다. Laban의 모션 분석 기법. 즉 LMA는 모션을 Effort라고 명명된 4개의 시공간적 요소로 나누고 각 4개의 Effort마다 2가지 상반된 기준을 제시함으로써 모션을 분석하도록 하였다. 이러한 기준을 양적으로 측정하기 위해 우리는 운동학, 역학에 기초한 수식을 제안하고 이를 통해서 계산된 실제 긴장도 값을 실험데이터에 근거하여 조정하였다. 실험을 통해 제안한 긴장도 측정 결과는 어느 정도 사람의 반응과 비슷한 정도의 순위 판별 능력을 보였다.

Kinect Sensor- based LMA Motion Recognition Model Development

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest that the movement expression activity of intellectually disabled people is effective in the learning process of LMA motion recognition based on Kinect sensor. We performed an ICT motion recognition games for intellectually disabled based on movement learning of LMA. The characteristics of the movement through Laban's LMA include the change of time in which movement occurs through the human body that recognizes space and the tension or relaxation of emotion expression. The design and implementation of the motion recognition model will be described, and the possibility of using the proposed motion recognition model is verified through a simple experiment. As a result of the experiment, 24 movement expression activities conducted through 10 learning sessions of 5 participants showed a concordance rate of 53.4% or more of the total average. Learning motion games that appear in response to changes in motion had a good effect on positive learning emotions.   • To create gesture from a new text input is an important problem in computer games and virtual reality. Recently, there is increasing interest in gesture stylization to imitate the gestures of celebrities, such as announcer. However, no attempt has been made so far to stylize a gestures using emotion such as happiness and sadness. Previous researches have not focused on real-time algorithm. In this paper, we present a system to automatically make gesture animation from SMS text and stylize the gesture from emotion. A key feature of this system is a real-time algorithm to combine gestures with emotion. Because the system's platform is a mobile phone, we distribute much works on the server and client. Therefore, the system guarantees real-time performance of 15 or more frames per second. At first, we extract words to express feelings and its corresponding gesture from Disney video and model the gesture statistically. And then, we introduce the theory of Laban Movement Analysis to combine gesture and emotion. In order to evaluate our system, we analyze user survey responses.

The Analysis of the Dimensions of Affection Structure and Hand Movements (손동작과 정서 차원 분석)

  • The dimensions of affection structure from hand movements was developed for the purpose of understanding relationship between affective words and physical factors to apply it to computing environment. To analyze hand movements, three dimensions -direction, time, weight- were found through reconstructing sub-properties of Laban Movement Analysis. The direction dimension has five freedoms of movement (horizontal, vertical, sagittal, circular, shaking) while the time and weight dimensions both have two sub categories each, (sudden, sustained), (light, strong) respectively. By factorial design using the three dimensions, twenty movement were videotaped. Participants rated a list of fifty korean affective words on each twenty movements. The results were studied by nonlinear principal component analysis. The results suggested that time and weight dimensions are closely related with arousal level dimension of affection. Strong and sudden movements associated with highly aroused affection, while light and sustained movements associated with the opposite affection. The direction sub-dimensions were found to be associated with the kinds of affection. Linear movements like horizontal, vortical and sagittal direction were correlated to highly aroused negative affection. Circular movements were found to correlate closely by fun and delight on the graph, while shaking movements were correlated to anxiety and impatience. These results imply that the dimensions of affection structure and sub-properties of hand movements are closely connected with each other.

  • These days, Emotional Design is on the sustainable development through activity study thogh, until now, the study proceed too far with Sensibility Ergonomics applied to SD. However, on this paper, the study would be make progress through GSD that it applied to Verb. For this reason, applied to Emotional Design consideration of theory through JOAN MEYERS-LEVY's papaer titled "The Influence of Ceiling Height", Laban Movement Analysis and Aspect of Semiotics and then judgement of GSD would be make progress through experiment to collection of Emotional Vocabularies and evaluation of body movement. There is a method of analysis by using statistical program such as SPSS 18.0 and it would have validity of analysis. Here is a result of this study. According to heights of ceiling types(2.4M, 3.0M) there are differences between behavior of Figure Attachment, Emotional Vocabularies of the event and Body Movement. While the Figure Attachment has a tendency to restricted scope, CH has a tendency to make attachment within the scope. You could see the Negative Adjective for Emotional Vocabularies at CL and the Positive Adjective ranges at the CH. Basic body movement for passive, 'moving' and 'stretching' as shown at CL more than the CH. For active movement which has purpose, 'moving the weight' and 'stretching' as shown at CH more than at CL.
