  • Recently, the JCT-VC is developing the next generation video coding standard that is called HEVC. HEVC has adopted many coding technologies increasing coding efficiency. For chroma interpolation, DCT-based interpolation filter showing better performance than the linear filter in H.264/AVC was adopted in HEVC. In this paper, a combined filter that utilizes the FIR filter and the linear filter in H.264/AVC is proposed to increase coding efficiency. When the proposed method is compared with DCT-based interpolation filter, the experimental results for various sequences show that the average BD-rate improvements on chroma U and V components are 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively, in the high efficiency case of random access structure, those on U and V components are 1.1% and 1.1%, respectively, in the low complexity case of random access structure, those on U and V components are 0.9% and 1.4%, respectively, in the high efficiency case of low delay structure, and those on U and V components are 1.8% and 1.8%, respectively, in the low complexity case of low delay structure.

  • When interpolating chrominance signal, the H.264/AVC standard uses linear interpolation. In this paper, we suggest more effective method that uses a high precision filter, 6-tap FIR filter, 2-tap linear filter for chroma interpolation. The experimental result shows that the proposed method achieves the BD-Rate decrease without the PSNR decrease compared with Jm11.0kta2.7. The maximum BD-rate improvements on Y component are 1.3%, those of Cb and Cr components are 19.8%, 25.0%, respectively. The average BD-rate improvements on Y component are 0.5%, those of Cb and Cr components are 6.1%, 6.9%, respectively.

  • Ocular inspection in oriental medicine, which identifies sickness by patient's skin color, is usually applied by doctor's subjective judgment. In order to reduce the subjectiveness of diagnosis, we propose a method of objective and quantitative analysis for ocular inspection. The most issued features for ocular inspection are how to identify the color of patients' face in various situations, and how to link the relation between color and sickness. For resolving these two issues, the color system of CIE Lab is adopted for analyzing and classifying the color characteristics. The classification of color features is verified by experiments on groups of patients and non-patients. The results of experiments showed that the proposed method can provide an objective means for ocular inspection using patient's skin color.

  • The aim of study was to compare the color parameters and mean color difference of porcelain specimens by different veneering technique in order to examine the effect of veneering technique on esthetics of yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystalline(Y-TZP) all ceramic restoration. Three groups of square-shaped core ceramic specimens(14mm in diameter and 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 mm) and two groups of veneering ceramic specimen were prepared for analysis. Color parameter($L^*,a^*,b^*$) and color difference of zirconia core squares and core-veneer specimens were measured with ShadeEye $NCC^{(R)}$ spectrophotometer, respectively. Mean color difference(${\Delta}E^*$)were calculated using color difference formula. Two-way analysis of variance(ANOVA) combined with a Tukey multiple-range test were used to analysis the data(${\alpha}=0.05$). ${\Delta}E^*$ values were not significantly affected by core thickness and veneering porcelain(p=0.083). The color differences(${\Delta}E^*$) of core-veneer specimens with 0.5, 0.7 mm-A1,A2,A3.5 shade were mostly below 3.7 which was within the clinically acceptable range, while color differences between 0.3 mm-A1,A2 showed more than 3.7. All-ceramic system has color characteristics that clinicians have to consider when selecting materials. Also, manufacturers of different porcelain systems must make every effort to achieve color reproducibility.

  • This paper reports the preparation and characterization of colored coatings of $SiO_2-TiO_2-M_xO_y$ (M = Co, Cr or Cu). Films of different compositions ranging from a molar content of transition metals of 5% to 20% have been prepared on soda-lime-silica slide glasses by the sol-gel process. The films have been characterized by a photospectroscopy. The color and reflectance of the films was expressed in Lab color chart and on spectra plot. 'L' as lightness and all reflectance decreased with increase of the content of transition metals. The coating of Co, Cu and Cr cotaining system showed light blue, green and lemon-yellowish color, respectively.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of color measuring instrument by measuring the color of dental composite resins. Nine shade light cured composite resin disks were prepared (diameter : 15 mm, thickness : 4 mm). CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color scale of each disk was measured with 3 different types of spectrophotometer [MiniScan XE plus (Model 4000S, Hunter Lab, USA), CM-3500d (Minolta, Japan) and Specbos 2100 Miniature VIS Reflection spectrometer (Serial No: 319416, JETI Technishe VIS Instrumentic GmbH. Germany)]. Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d using identical measuring geometry with different size of viewing aperture. But Specbos 2100 using different measuring geometry. Within the limitation of this study, there were color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) from 2.4 to 7.8 between Miniscan XE Plus and CM-3500d, but $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values showed the high correlation. However, there were great color difference (${\Delta}E^*$) in the extent of about 20 between instruments with the different measuring geometry. Therefore, color scale measured by color measuring instrument should be used as a relative value rather than an absolute value in the field of dentistry.

  • A colour-difference formulae would be based on a colour appearance model, but, So far, most colour-difference formulae in common use are based on empirical fits to data. Therefore, of the many proposed, none are completely satisfactory but advances have been made in recent years. A new color-difference data set has been produced with the aims of making a comparison of the advanced CIE Lab formulae as well as confirming the effect of color-difference. 416 low lightness pairs that have only lightness-difference were produced for evaluation of CIE Lab-based formulae on lightness-difference from glossy polyester fabric. The standard color-difference pair was prepared and used. It was neutral grey sample pair that has only lightness difference. The standard pair was used to investigate lightness tolerances. And grey-scale method used to evaluate visual assessment. CIE Lab coordinates of the samples were measured using a X-Rite 8200 spectrophotometer. Visual assessments were carried out using Gretag Macbeth The Judge II Light Booth. A study of color tolerances at low lightness was carried out and get avaliable some results.

  • In this study, we investigated the weathering properties of Korean Rhus lacquers containing tung oil and their potential use as exterior coatings. The finished lacquers were prepared with a raw Korean Rhus lacquer or refined Korean Rhus lacquer content of 10, 20, 30 and 40 wt.% (corresponding to ratios of 10/90, 20/80, 30/70 and 40/60 by weight of Korean Rhus lacquer/tung oil, respectively). The curing temperature of the prepared lacquer increased with increasing the content of the raw Korean Rhus lacquer. This increased curing temperature is related to higher proportion of hydroxyl groups in the prepared lacquer, due to the content of the raw Korean Rhus lacquer. In accelerated weathering testing, the changes in the gloss and contact angle of the prepared lacquers showed a similar trend to that of traditional exterior oil stain. In addition, the prepared lacquers containing tung oil showed greater discoloration than traditional exterior oil stain. However, the discoloration of the prepared lacquer with a raw Korean Rhus lacquer content of 40 wt.%, and that of the prepared lacquer with refined Korean Rhus lacquer contents of 30 wt.% and 40 wt.%, showed a similar trend to that of traditional exterior oil stain. Consequentially, these prepared lacquers showed a potential for being used as exterior coatings.
