Effect of Tetragonal $ZrO_2$ Addition on the Mechanical Properties of $\alpha$-Alumina/La-\beta-Aluminate $Composite (정방정 $ZrO_2$의 첨가가 $\alpha$-Alumina/La-\beta-Aluminate $ 복합체의 기계적 성질에 미치는 영향)

  • Alumina composite was fabricated by introducing tetragonal ZrO2 in alumina composite of $\alpha$-alumina reinforced with in-situ formed La-$\beta$-aluminate (LaAl11O18). The powder mixture of composition (100-x)[88 Al2O3+(La2O3+11 Al2O3)]+x vol% ZrO2 was prepared with x from 0 to 40. Dense composites fabricated by hot-pressing exhibited bending strength up to 1200 MPa. The gain growth inhibiting effect of ZrO2 grains and La-$\beta$-aluminate platelets, and possibly the stress-induced phase transformation of ZrO2 have resulted in the high bending strength. The fracture toughness of the composite also increased up to 8.5 MPa.m1/2. The enhancement in toughness can be explained by transformation and microcrack toughening of ZrO2 and by crack deflection and bridging of La-$\beta$-aluminate platelets and ZrO2.

Ammonia gas sensing characteristics of LaFeO3 thick-films With Al2O3 additives (Al2O3를 첨가한 LaFeO3 후막의 암모니아 가스 감지특성)

  • $LaFeO_3$-based thick films with 2wt.%, 5wt.% and 10wt.% $Al_2O_3$ additives were fabricated by screen printing method on $Al_2O_3$ substrates. Structural, electrical and ammonia gas sensing characteristics of the thick films with different heat treatment temperatures were examined. From XRD results, the compound of $LaFeO_3$ and $Al_2O_3$ was not found until the heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$. SEM microphotograph showed similar grain growth despite the amount of $Al_2O_3$ additives with the heat treatment. Thick films with high activation energy and low resistance in the electrical properties showed high sensitivity for gases. Thick films with 2wt % $Al_2O_3$ additives heat-treated at $1200^{\circ}C$ showed the sensitivities of 210% for 100 ppm $NH_3$ gas at the working temperature of $350^{\circ}C$. The thick films showed food selectivity to $NH_3$ gas.

  • Impedancemetric $NO_x$ (NO and $NO_2$) gas sensors were designed with a stacked-layer structure and fabricated using $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$ (x = 0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8 and 1) as the receptor material and $Li_{1.3}Al_{0.3}Ti_{1.7}(PO_4)_3$ plates as the solid-electrolyte transducer material. The $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$ layers were prepared with a polymeric precursor method that used ethylene glycol as the solvent, acetyl acetone as the chelating agent, and polyvinylpyrrolidone as the polymer additive. The effects of the Co concentration on the structural, morphological, and $NO_x$ sensing properties of the $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$ powders were investigated with powder X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and its response to 20~250 ppm of $NO_x$ at $400^{\circ}C$ (for 1 kHz and 0.5 V), respectively. When the as-prepared precursors were calcined at $700^{\circ}C$, only a single phase was detected, which corresponded to a perovskite-type structure. The XRD results showed that as the Co concentration of the $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$powders increased, the crystal structure was transformed from an orthorhombic phase to a rhombohedral phase. Moreover, the $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$ powders with $0{\leq}x<0.8$ had a rhombohedral symmetry. The size of the particles in the $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3$powders increased from 0.1 to $0.5{\mu}m$ as the Co concentration increased. The sensing performance of the stack-structured $LaCr_xCo_{1-x}O_3/Li_{1.3}Al_{0.3}Ti_{1.7}(PO_4)_3$ sensors was found to divide the impedance component between the resistance and capacitance. The response of these sensors to NO gas was more sensitive than that to $NO_2$ gas. Compared to other impedancemetric sensors, the $LaCr_{0.8}Co_{0.2}O_3/Li_{1.3}Al_{0.3}Ti_{1.7}(PO_4)_3$ sensor exhibited good reversibility and reliable sensingresponse properties for $NO_x$ gases.

  • Influence of $La_2O_3$ addition to $CaO-B_2O_3$-based glass on the water leaching resistance of the glass was first investigated. The optimized $La_2O_3-CaO-B_2O_3$(LCB) glass was ball milled for varying time, followed by mixing with $Al_2O_3$ crystalline phase to form $Al_2O_3$-LCB glass composites at $875^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Microwave dielectric properties of the composites were investigated as a function of the ball milling time of the LCB glass. Dielectric constant and quality factor of the composites were 6.31 and 13856 GHz, respectively, when the LCB glass was ball milled for 2h prior to mixing with $Al_2O_3$.

  • The activities of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$, Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst for $CO_2$ reforming of $CH_4$ were investigated in a fixed bed flow reactor under atmospheric condition. Catalyst characterization using XRD, TEM, SEM, BET analysis were also conducted. The catalytic activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst has relatively superior to that of Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst. The good activity of Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst seems to depend on reduced $Ni^{\circ}$ phases of NiO($\rightarrow$ Ni + O), $LaNiO_3$($\rightarrow$ $Ni+La_2O_3$), Ni crystalline phases, and decoration of Ni phases by lanthanum species is also an important factor. Ni(20wt%)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ and Ni(20wt%)/$SiO_2$ catalyst due to surface acidity resulted in the deposition of wisker type and encapsulate carbon on the surface of catalyst, but Ni(20wt%)/$La_2O_3$ catalyst did not show carbon on the surface of catalyst up to 8.5hr reaction.

  • The joining behavior of YSZ ceramics to the glasses used in the $9Al_2O_3-24ZrO_2-51SiO_2-16R_2O$ and $9Al_2O_3-24ZrO_2-51SiO_2-7La_2O_3-9R_2O$ (wt%) glass systems was investigated. The glass transition and softening temperatures were determined to be $430^{\circ}C$ and $760^{\circ}C$, respectively. The behavior of the contact angle was inversely proportional to an increase in the temperature. The Zr element in YSZ acted as a nucleation agent and contributed to the bonding behavior at the interface.

  • Lanthanum aluminate($LaAlO_3$) film has been prepared on single crystal and metal substrates by dip coating method. Lanthanum acetate and aluminum were prepared via ligand exchange starting from lanthanum nitrate hexahydrate and aluminum nitrate hexahydrate in acetate glacial acetic acid solution after being refluxed. Coating solution was obtained by diluting the gel with methanol and 2-methoxyethanol to adjust the total cation concentration to 0.67 M. Precursor coated film was prepared by dip-coating with a speed of 25 mm/min on various substrates such as $LaAlO_3$ (001), MgO(001), $SrTiO_3$(001) single crystal, LMO/MgO/Ni-alloy. Thin films have been obtained by heat treating the precursor film at various temperatures from $600^{\circ}C{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ and various heating rate from $0.83^{\circ}C/min{\sim}1.25^{\circ}C/min$ under $Ar/O_2$ mixture containing 1000ppm oxygen. The films have been characterized by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD analysis for the prepared film showed that $LaAlO_3$ thin films with a preferred orientation of (100) plane parallel to substrate surface were obtained at $800^{\circ}C(1.11\;^{\circ}C/min)$ on LMO/MgO/Ni-alloy substrate, but the intensity decreased with the increase of heat treatment temperature.

  • We manufactured Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) and (1-x)CaTiO3-xLaAlO3 (CT-LA) ceramic composites and investigated dielectric properties to use as embedded capacitor in printed circuit boards and replace LTCC substrate. The dielectric properties of these composites are varied with volume fraction of CT-LA and ratios of CT/LA. Dielectric constants are in the range of 3~15. In addition, we could get low TCC and High Q value that could not achieve in other ceramic-polymer composites. Especially, in composite with x=0.01 and 30 vol% CT-LA, the dieletric constant and Q-value are 10 and 200, respectively. And more TCC is $-28{\sim}300ppm/^{\circ}C$ in the temperature range of $-55{\sim}125^{\circ}C$. We think that this composites can be used high-Q substrate material like LTCC and embedded temperature compensation capacitor in printed circuit boards.

Preparation and Structure Properties of LaBa2Cu2O9, LaBa22CaCu3O12 and LaBa2Ca2Cu5O15 Perovskites

  • In this study we examine variations in the structure of perovskite compounds of LaBa2Cu2O9, LaBa22CaCu3O12 and LaBa2Ca2Cu5O15 synthesized using the solid state reaction method. The samples' compositions were assessed using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis. The La: Ba: Ca: Cu ratios for samples LaBa2Cu2O9, LaBa22CaCu3O12 and LaBa2Ca2Cu5O15 were found by XRF analysis to be around 1:2:0:2, 1:2:1:3, and 1:2:2:5, respectively. The samples' well-known structures were then analyzed using X-ray diffraction. The three samples largely consist of phases 1202, 1213, and 1225, with a trace quantity of an unknown secondary phase, based on the intensities and locations of the diffraction peaks. According to the measured parameters a, b, and c, every sample has a tetragonal symmetry structure. Each sample's mass density was observed to alter as the lead oxide content rose. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of the three phases revealed that different Ca-O and Cu-O layers can cause different grain sizes, characterized by elongated thin grains, without a preferred orientation.
