  • Ultrasonography and photodynamic therapy have been proposed as useful tools as a treatment for inducing necrosis of cells using reactive oxygen species. Apoptosis is an internal mechanism necessary for cells regardless of damage. Ultrasound has the effect of inducing the apoptosis of these cells, and the frequency of 1 MHz is the most applicable area for medical use. The laser which is generally used in photodynamic therapy has a heat reaction and the treatment is limited. However, as a small light emitting diode is developed, it shows possibility to minimize the equipment and reduce heat reaction. On the other hand, there are relatively few researches on direct effects of light compared with studies using photosensitizers, and the area is also limited. Therefore, in this paper, we have developed a cancer cell proliferation control module using ultrasonic and light emitting diodes, which have relatively few side effects, and quantitatively analyze the effect of the module to propose an optimal suppression technique.

  • Mobile devices with Android OS and iOS have been emerged as mobile computing devices where various software applications are deployed. Furthermore, they are anticipated to be used not only for traditional personal computing but also for enterprise computing. However, such mobile devices have their intrinsic characteristics such as limited resources and flexible network capabilities, which are not revealed in traditional computers. Hence, there is high demand for methods to develop mobile applications with reflecting their intrinsic characteristics. Since those characteristics belong to non-functional requirements, they should be reflected in architecture design while designing mobile applications. To design architecture, the architecture drivers that are architecture non-functional requirements are decided from mobile application characteristics. Conventional architecture design methods do not consider those characteristics so that the methods cannot be straightforwardly applied to mobile applications. In this paper, to efficiently develop mobile applications reflecting those characteristics, we propose a set of architecture patterns and define a guideline to apply those patterns. First, we define the characteristics of mobile applications distinguished and derive architectural drivers from them. Then, we propose architecture patterns in terms of static and dynamic views and define an architectural guideline to apply the patterns to designing architecture for mobile application. And, we perform case studies to verify the applicability of proposed patterns. Finally, we assess the proposed architecture patterns by proving how the patterns can fulfill identified architecture drivers and by comparing our approach with previous works.

  • Mobile devices have limited computing power and resources. Since mobile devices are equipped with rich network connectivity, an approach to subscribe cloud services can effectively remedy the problem, which is called Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC). Most works on MCC depend on a method to offload functional components at runtime. However, these works only consider the limited verion of offloading to a pre-defined, designated node. Moveover, there is the limitation of managing services subscribed by applications. To provide a comprehensive and practical solution for MCC, in this paper, we propose a self-stabilizing process and its management-related methods. The proposed process is based on an autonomic computing paradigm and works with diverse quality remedy actions such as migration or replicating services. And, we devise a pratical offloading mechanism which is still in an initial stage of the study. The proposed offloading mechanism is based on our proposed MCC meta-model. By adopting the self-stabilization process for MCC, many of the technical issues are effectively resolved, and mobile cloud environments can maintain consistent levels of quality in autonomous manner.

  • The saccharogenic liquid (SFW) obtained by the enzymatic saccharification of food wastes was used as a medium for production of bacterial cellulose (BC). The enzymatic saccharification of food wastes was carried out by the cultivation supernatant of Tricoderma inhamatum KSJ1 culture. Acetobacter xylinum KJ1 was employed for the BC production culture. Under the scaled-up aeration condition of 1.0 vvm, 5.64 g/L of BC was produced in 3 days cultivation in 50 L air circulation bioreactor using SFW medium with addition of 0.4% agar. The productivity was similar to that of 10 L air circulation bioreactor (5.84 g/L). This cultivation method with 50 L air circulation bioreactor decreasing shear stress and increasing oxygen transfer coefficient ($k_La$) was very useful in BC mass production. The physical properties, such as morphology, molecular weight, crystallinity, and tensile strength of BC produced by the static culture (A), the air circulation culture using 10 L bioreactor (B) and 50 L bioreactor (C) were investigated. The number average molecular weight of BCs produced under the different culture conditions (A-C) showed 2,578,000, 1,975,000, and 1,809,000, respectively. Tensile strength was 1.72 $kg/mm^2$, 1.19 $kg/mm^2$, and 1.18 $kg/mm^2$, respectively. All of the BCs had a form of cellulose I representing pure cellulose. The relative degree of crystallinity showed the range of 86.2$\sim$87.8%. BC production by the air circulation culture mode brought more favorable results in terms of the physical properties and its ease of scale-up. Therefore, it is expected that the new BC production method, the air circulation culture using SFW, would contribute greatly to BC-related manufacturing.

  • Among the more than 120 different types of human papillomavirus (HPV), types 16 and 18 have been known to be high risk agents that cause cervical cancer. We examined, in an immuno-chromatographic analysis, the potential of using the early gene product, E7 protein, as a diagnostic marker of cervical cancer caused by HPV. We developed monoclonal antibodies specific to HPV-16 and 18 E7 proteins that were produced from bacterial cells using gene recombinant technology. For each E7 protein, the optimal antibody pair was selected using the immuno-chromatographic sandwichtype binding system based on the lateral flow through membrane pores. Under these conditions, this rapid testing assay had a detection capability as low as 2 ng/mL of E7 protein. Furthermore, since viral analysis required the host cell to be lysed using chemicals such as detergents, it was possible that the E7 protein was structurally damaged during this process, which would result in a decrease in detection sensitivity. Therefore, we examined the detrimental effects caused by different detergents on the E7 protein using HeLa cells as the host. In these experiments, we found that the damage caused by the detergent, nonylphenylpolyethylene glycol (NP-40), was minimal relative to Triton X-100 commonly used for the cell lysis. Temperature also affected the stability of the E7 protein, and we found that the E7 protein was stabilized at 4$^{\circ}C$ for about 2 h, which was 4 times longer than at room temperature. Finally, a HPV-infected cervical cancer cell line, which was used as a real sample model, was treated using the optimized conditions and the presence of E7 proteins were analyzed by immuno-chromatography. The results of this experiment demonstrated that this rapid test could specifically detect HPV-infected samples.

  • The effects of the ratio of 45% alcohol and Maesil(Prumus mume) (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, w/v) on quality changes of Maesil liqueur during leaching and ripening for 5 months were examined. Total acidity increased with an increase ratio of Maesil and leaching and ripening periods. The pH increased as increase ratio of alcohol. The color of liqueur became dark as an increase ratio of Maesil and leaching and ripening periods. The contents of alcohol after leaching and ripening for 2 months were 24.3%(1:1), 32.2%(1:2), and 36.0%(1:3), respectively and decreased as an increase the ratio of Maesil. The contents of reducing sugar and polyphenol in the liqueur increased with an increase ratio of Maesil and leaching and ripening periods. The major components of free sugar in the liqueur were fructose, glucose, sucrose and maltose but sucrose and maltose did not detect regardless the ratio of Maesil after leaching and ripening for 2 months. The major components of organic acid in the liqueur were citric, lactic, malic, and acetic acids. The total amount of organic acid increased as an increase the ratio of Maesil but the changes of individual organic acid in the liqueur contained different ratio of Maesil showed the different tendency each other.

  • Quality characteristics of Yanggaeng prepared with water extract (CRE) and powder (CRP) of roasted coffee ground (CR) were investigated. Total polyphenol content and DPPH raidcal scavenging ability of water extract of CRE were 13.52 g/mL and 78.75%, respectively. The pH ranges of Yanggaeng prepared with CRE (CREY) and CRP (CRPY) were 7.10~7.29 and 6.95~7.15, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activities of CREY containing 0.1~1.0% CRE showed 8.77~43.10% and CRPY containing 0.1~1.0% CRP showed 5.28~14.92%. The total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging activity of CREY and CRPY increased significantly with increasing CRE and CRP concentrations (p<0.05). Sensory evaluation which includes taste, flavor, texture, and overall acceptability of CREY and CRPY were higher than that of control. The overall acceptability showed the highest levels in Yanggaeng containing 0.5% CRE and containing 0.3% CRP. These results indicate the potential use of roasted coffee ground residue as a valuable resource for development of side menu in coffee restaurants.

  • The present investigation was initiated to find out the possible insect vector of the paulownia witches'-broom virus disease. 1. Among a number of piercing-sucking mouth type insects that were feeding on the witches'-broom infected Paulownia leaves, the tobacco leaf bug, Cyrtopeltis tenuis REUTER, was most abundant. Eggs, nymphs and adults of Cyrtopeltis tenuis were observed from the mid-August through the end of October. 2. It was found that Paulownia witches'-broom virus is transmitted by Cyrotopeltis tenuis. 3. On young Pnulownia plants, first symptom appeared twenty days after exposure to virus-bearing colonies of Cyrtopeltis tenuis. Forty days after exposure to these viruliferous insects, the characteristic symptom of Paulownia witches'-broom was apparent. 4. Paulownia witches' -broom virus was also transmitted by Cyrtopeltis tenuis to calendula and morning glory. No app"rent symptom was observed from tomato, carrot. aster, zinnia, cosmos, soybean and plantago at least until sixty days after exposure to the viruliferous colonies of Cyrtopeltis tenuis. 5. Calendula and morning glory appear to be highly suitable test plants for Paulownia witches'-broom vims because of their relatively short incubation period and distinct symptom appearance.

  • Background: Regulatory T cells (Tregs) have been investigated intensively for some decades. These cells regulate the immune system, prevent overactivated immune responses and can be used therapeutically. For rheumatoid arthritis (RA), understanding the functions and status of Tregs is an important step for understanding immune regulation in this autoimmune disease. Methods: We investigated the percentages, phenotypes and suppressive functions of $CD4^+CD25^+$ Tregs in peripheral blood (PB) of patients with RA. Results: The percentages were higher in the patients (n=12) than in healthy controls (n=10), and the cells expressed the $CD45RB^{low}$, CTLA-4 and CCR7 phenotypes. We also investigated the expression of Foxp3 and secretion of interleukin (IL)-10 induced $CD4^+CD25^+$ Tcells by anti-CD3 antibody treatment. A suppressive function of the patients' cells was shown through coculture with $CD4^+CD25^-$ T cells in vitro. Conclusion: We suggest that, despite their increased numbers and suppressive function, they manage the ongoing inflammation ineffectively. It might be possible to apply IL-10 to induce the proliferation of IL-10-producing Tregs as therapy for RA.
