Development of the Functional Beverage Containing the Prunus mume Extracts (매실 추출물을 함유한 기능성 음료 개발)

  • This study was performed to investigate the cytotoxic effect of the Prunus mume extracts containing beverages on the growth of SNU-16 gastric cancer cell, SNU-C2A colon cancer cell, SNU-449 liver cancer cell and HeLa cervical cancer cell. The inhibitory effect on the growth of the cancer cell lines was examined by MTT(3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay, cytotoxicity test and microscopy. Also this study aimed to compare the changes of blood electrolytes and osmolarity during submaximal exercise for the intake of the Prunus mume extracts containing beverages. 20% Prunus mume extracts containing beverage exhibited the greatest inhibitory effect on the growth of SNU-16 and significantly inhibited at the concentration of $1000\;{\mu}g/mL$ in the MTT assay. Morphological changes in SNU-16 which treated with the same beverage were observed under inverted microscope. The change of blood electrolytes and osmolarity during submaximal exercise showed no significant differences between before and after intake of the beverage in both groups.

  • The catalytic hydrogenation of carbon dioxide has been studied for the fixation of carbon dioxide to mitigate global warming problems, but it needed hydrogen, which the price is still high. Recently, the electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide has been drawn attractions because carbon dioxide could be converted to the valuable chemicals such as methane, ethane and alcohols electrochemically in the electrolyte solution using a catalytic electrode. This system is simple because the water electrolysis and hydrogenation take place at the same time using the surplus electricity at midnight. In this work, a continuous electrochemical reduction system was fabricated, which was composed of the reduction electrode (copper or perovskite type, $2{\times}2cm^2$), reference electrode(platinum, $2{\times}6cm^2$), standard electrode(Ag/AgCl), and potassium bicarbonate electrolyte solution saturated with carbon dioxide. The quality and quantity of the products and reduction current were analyzed, according to the electrolyte concentration and electrode type.

TREATMENT OF CROWN-ROOT FRACTURE USING FIBER-REINFORCED POST: A CASE STUDY (섬유강화형 포스트를 이용한 치관-치근 파절의 치료: 증례 보고)

  • The crown-root fracture is defined as a fracture of tooth that contains enamel, dentin and cementum with or without pulp exposure. Generally the fracture lines place obliquely from labial surface, between incisal edge of the crown and marginal gingiva, to palatal surface subgingivally. If the fracture line is located supragingivally, the removal of tooth fragment and supragingival restoration can be performed. In subgingival fracture line, the surgical exposure, orthodontic eruption or surgical eruption can be considered. If the fracture line is too deep to restorate, extraction or decoronation can be selected. In children and adolescents, the extraction should be the last option. Another option to select before extraction is the restoration using fiber-reinforced post and the reattachment of tooth fragment. The fiber-rainforced post enhances the retention and the durability of tooth fragment. The reattachment of crown fragment using resin adhesive system is considered minimal invasive treatment biologically. This case reports the treatment of crown-root fracture using the reattachment of crown fragment and the insertion of fiber-reinforced post.

The effects of Meridian Massage on the functions of upper limbs and depression of hemiplegic patients (경락마사지가 편마비환자의 상지 기능과 우울에 미치는 효과)

  • Meridian massage is originated from oriental medical manipulation, and it has been mainly applied to as pain and paralysis. The purpose was to develop new method of nursing care for help hemiplegic patients to recover their functions of upper limbs and to reduce depressions. This study was carried out between 8, March, and 8, June, 2000 and the subjects of the study were .60 hemiplegic stroke patients who were participants at a hospitalized in K oriental medical center. The experimental group(30) and the control group(30) were assigned by means of participation order. The experimental group took meridian massage on affected upper limb for 10 minutes daily for 2 weeks. We evaluated muscle power and endurance with band from AVIVA corp.; range of motion with goniometer; shoulder pain with visual analogue scale; swelling with Jeweiers ring measurement of Dirette; depression with self-rating depression scale translated into Korean by Yang(1982). Data were analyzed by SPSS PC and the results are described below. The experimental group showed better muscle power and endurance than control group. Range of motiont of affected shoulder improved significantly in experimental group. Also, the experimental group showed less shoulder pain, hand edema, depression than control group. In this study, we observed that meridian massage is an effective nursing care in improving the function of upper limb and managing depression of stroke patients.

Monitoring-based Coordination of Network-adaptive FEC for Wireless Multi-hop Video Streaming (무선 멀티 홉 비디오 스트리밍을 위한 모니터링 기반의 네트워크 적응적 FEC 코디네이션)

  • Video streaming over wireless multi-hop networks(WMNs) contains the following challenges from channel fading and variable bandwidth of wireless channel, and it cause degradation of video streaming performance. To overcome the challenges, currently, WMNs can use Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanism. In WMNs, traditional FEC schemes, E2E-FEC and HbH-FEC, for video streaming are applied, but it has long transmission delay, high computational complexity and inefficient usage of resource. Also, to distinguish network status in streaming path, it has limitation. In this paper, we propose monitoring-based coordination of network-adaptive hop-to-end(H2E) FEC scheme. To enable proposed scheme, we apply a centralized coordinator. The coordinator has observing overall monitoring information and coordinating H2E-FEC mechanism. Main points of H2E-FEC is distinguishing operation range as well as selecting FEC starting node and redundancy from monitored results in coordination. To verify the proposed scheme, we perform extensive experiment over the OMF(Orbit Measurement Framework) and IEEE 802.1la-based multi-hop WMN testbed, and we carry out performance improvement, 17%, from performance comparison by existing FEC scheme.

Glass-alumina Composites Prepared by Melt-infiltration: Ⅰ. Effect of Alumina Particle Size (용융침투법으로 제조한 유리-알루미나 복합체: Ⅰ. 알루미나 입도 효과)

  • Two commercial alumina powders having different particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ and 3${\mu}$m were presintered at 1120$^{\circ}$C for 2h and then lanthanum aluminosilicate glass was infiltrated at 1100$^{\circ}$C for up to 4h to obtain the densified glass-alumina composites. The effect of alumina particle size on packing factor, microstructure, wetting, porosity and pore size, and mechanical properties of the composite was investigated. The optimum mechanical properties and compaction behavior were observed for the 3${\mu}$m alumina particle dispersed composite. The 3${\mu}$m alumina particle size and distribution for he preform were within 0.1 to 48${\mu}$m and bimodal and random orientation. The strength and the fracture toughness of the composite having 3${\mu}$m alumina particles were 519MPa and $4.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively.

Development and Validation of Inner Environment Prediction Model for Glass Greenhouse using CFD (CFD를 이용한 유리온실 내부 환경 예측 모델 개발 및 검증)

  • Because the inner environment of greenhouse has a direct impact on crop production, many studies have been performed to develop technologies for controlling the environment in the greenhouse. However, it is difficult to apply the technology developed to all greenhouses because those studies were conducted through empirical experiments in specific greenhouses. It takes a lot of time and cost to develop the models that can be applicable to all greenhouse in real situation. Therefore studies are underway to solve this problem using computer-based simulation techniques. In this study, a model was developed to predict the inner environment of glass greenhouse using CFD simulation method. The developed model was validated using primary and secondary heating experiment and daytime greenhouse inner temperature data. As a result of comparing the measured and predicted value, the mean temperature and uniformity were 2.62℃ and 2.92%p higher in the predicted value, respectively. R2 was 0.9628, confirming that the measured and the predicted values showed similar tendency. In the future, the model needs to improve by applying the shape of the greenhouse and the position of the inner heat exchanger for efficient thermal energy management of the greenhouse.

  • Solvolysis rate constants for methylchloroformate, methylthionochloroformate, methylthiolchloroformate and methyldithiochloroformate have been determined conductometrically in methanol, ethanol and ethanol-water mixtures and activation parameters have been derived. Results show that methylchloroformate solvolyzes through $S_N2$ process while methyldithiochloroformate solvolyzes by $S_N1$ process in all the solvent systems. The rate of hydrolysis decreased in the order, $CH_3S(CS)Cl>CH_3S(CO)Cl>CH_3O(CS)Cl>CH_3O(CO)Cl$ which corresponds to the order of decreasing $S_N1$ character. In methanol, $CH_3S(CS)Cl$ solvolyzed via the $S_N1$ mechanism while the others solvolyzed via the $S_N2$ process. In ethanol, however, $S_N2$ character was dominant for all the compounds, except methyldithiochloroformate, for which $S_N1$ character was still strong enough to accelerate the rate of ethanolysis. In ethanol-water mixtures, $CH_3S(CS)Cl$ and $CH_3S(CS)Cl$ solvolyzed via $S_N2$ process in ethanol-rich region while the $S_N1$ character increased greatly in water-rich region for the solvolysis of these compounds. The order of $S_N1$ character for solvolysis in water-rich region was the same as the order of hydrolysis rate.

The Red-ginseng Extract Alters the Cell Cycle and Viability in the Human Neuronal Stem Cells (홍삼추출액의 인간성체신경줄기세포 증식과 세포사 관련 세포주기의 변화에 대한 효과)

  • The present study is to determine whether the Red-ginseng extract has a proliferative or cytotoxic effect on the human neuronal stem cells(hNSCs). The hNSCs were grown and incubated with different doses of Red-ginseng extract. We tested the proliferative or cytotoxic effects by MTT and FACS analysis. Cell viability cell cycle analysis, DNA fragmentation, and bax or PARP expressions were evaluated. The hNSCs showed a proliferafe trend with its peak concentration at 0.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. Beyond this point, higher doses decreased viabilities and showed a cytotoxic effect at 10 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. There was a tendency of increased S and G2/M phases during cell proliferation. In a cytotoxic condition, decreased S phase and increased G0/G1 phases were noted, suggesting cell cycle arrest. The cytotoxic effect was associated with increase DNA fragmentation in a dose-dependent manner, However PARP cleavage or bax expression was not detected. Our results suggest that Red-ginseng extract has dual effects, the cell proliferative or cytotoxic effect, on hNSCs in vitro with dose-dependent manner.

Fermentation and Quality Characteristics of Cheonggukjang with Chinese Cabbage (배추 첨가 청국장의 제조 및 품질특성)

  • The fermentation and quality characteristics of Cheonggukjang with Chinese cabbage, which is produced as a by-product in the kimchi industry, were investigated. Cheonggukjang was prepared with cooked soybean without Chinese cabbage (control), with 10% Chinese cabbage (A10), and with 20% Chinese cabbage (A20), respectively. The A10 and A20 pH values did not show a significant difference compared with the control during fermentation for 72 h. The total aerobes of the Cheonggukjangs reached 8.65 (control), 8.73 (A10), and 9.11 (A20) log CFU/mL after fermentation for 72 h at $37^{\circ}C$, respectively. The numbers of lactic acid bacteria were found to be 5.62 (A10) and 5.87 (A20) log CFU/mL during fermentation for 72 h at $37^{\circ}C$, but lactic acid bacteria were not detected in the control. The amino nitrogen and viscous substance contents of A10 and A20 were lower than those of the control. The total polyphenol contents and DPPH radical scavenging abilities of the tested Cheonggukjang were increased by fermentation. The increasing ratio of polyphenol and the DPPH radical scavenging ability of A10 were higher than those of the control and of A20. The sensory quality of A10 was higher than that of the control and of A20 in taste, color, and overall acceptability.
