  • The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the levels of inbreeding on body weight traits between two breed populations, Hanwoo and Korea Brindle cattle. Birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW), body weight at 6 months of age (W6) and yearling weight (YW). Records of 1,745 calves (1,513 from Hanwoo, and 232 from Korea Brindle calves) were collected from Livestock Research Institutes in Kangwon, Gyeongbuk and Chungbuk provinces. The least squares means (LSM) and their standard errors for BW, WW, W6 and YW were $25.4{\pm}0.1$ kg, $81.0{\pm}1.8$ kg, $146.1{\pm}3.7$ kg and $291.5{\pm}2.4$ kg, respectively in Hanwoo calves and $22.6{\pm}0.3$ kg, $79.9{\pm}2.3$ kg, $137.6{\pm}4.6$ kg and $249.3{\pm}6.6$ kg, respectively in Korea Brindle calves. Pedigree data showed that 14.8% (316 out of 2131) of Hanwoo was inbred and the average inbreeding coefficient was 0.0209 (2.09%). Inbreeding coefficients of ten calves out of 316 total inbred Hanwoo calves were 12.5% or higher, whereas those of the other 306 calves were less than 12.5%. In both breeds, calves were divided into three groups of inbreeding classes - highly inbred group($F{\geq}0.125$), lowly to medially inbred group(0

  • The new conjunctive surface-subsurface flow model at a large scale was developed by using a 1-D Diffusion Wave (DW) model for surface flow interacting with the 3-D Volume Averaged Soil-moisture Transport (VAST) model for subsurface flow for the comprehensive terrestrial water and energy predictions in Land Surface Models (LSMs). A selection of numerical implementation schemes is employed for each flow component. The 3-D VAST model is implemented using a time splitting scheme applying an explicit method for lateral flow after a fully implicit method for vertical flow. The 1-D DW model is then solved by MacCormack finite difference scheme. This new conjunctive flow model is substituted for the existing 1-D hydrologic scheme in Common Land Model (CLM), one of the state-of-the-art LSMs. The new conjunctive flow model coupled to CLM is tested for a study domain around the Ohio Valley. The simulation results show that the interaction between surface flow and subsurface flow associated with the flow routing scheme matches the runoff prediction with the observations more closely in the new coupled CLM simulations. This improved terrestrial hydrologic module will be coupled to the Climate extension of the next-generation Weather Research and Forecasting (CWRF) model for advanced regional, continental, and global hydroclimatological studies and the prevention of disasters caused by climate changes.

  • It is important to consider the effect of member size when estimating the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member because the strength always decreases with an increase of member size. In this study, the size effect of a reinforced concrete (RC) beam was experimentally investigated. For this purpose, a series of beam specimens subjected to four-point loading were tested. More specifically, three different effective depth (d$\approx$15, 30, and 60 cm) reinforced concrete beams were tested to investigate the size effect. The shear-span to depth ratio (a/d=3) and thickness (20 cm) of the specimens were kept constant where the size effect in out-of-plane direction is not considered. The test results are curve fitted using least square method (LSM) to obtain parameters for the modified size effect law (MSEL). The analysis results show that the flexural compressive strength and the ultimate strain decrease as the specimen size increases. In the future study, since $\beta_1$ value suggested by design code and ultimate strain change with specimen size variation, a more detailed analysis should be performed. Finally, parameters for MSEL are also suggested.

  • Statement of problem. The success of osseointegration can be enhanced with an implant that has improved surface characteristics. Anodic oxidation is one of the surface modifying method to achieve osseointegration. Voltage of anodic oxidation can change surface characteristics and cell activity Purpose. This study was performed to evaluate MG63 cell responses such as affinity, proliferation and to compare surface characteristics of anodic oxidized titanium in various voltage. Material and method. The disks for cell culture were fabricated from grade 3 commercially pure titanium,1 m in thickness and 12 mm in diameter. Surfaces of 4 different roughness were prepared. Group 1 had a machined surface, used as control. Group 2 was anodized under 220 V, group 3 was anodized under 300 V and group 4 was anodized under 320 V. The microtopography of specimens was observed by scanning electron microscope (JSM-840A, JEOL, Japan) and atomic force microscope(Autoprobe CP, Park Scientific Instrument, USA). The surface roughness was measured by confocal laser scanning microscope(Pascal, LSM5, Zeiss, Germany). The crystal structure of the titanium surface was analyzed with x-ray diffractometer(D8 advanced, Broker, Germany). MG63 osteoblast-like cells were cultured on these specimens. The cell morpholgy was observed by field emission electron microscope(Hitachi S-4700, Japan). The cell metabolic and proliferative activity was evaluated by MTT assay Results and conclusion. With in limitations of this in vitro study, the following conclusions were drawn. 1. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see pores which did not show in control group. In higher anodizing voltage, pore size was increased. 2. In anodizing titanium surface, we could see anatase. In higher anodizing voltage, thicker oxide layer increased crystallinity(anatase, anatase and rutile mixed). 3. MG63 cells showed more irregular, polarized and polygonal shape and developed more lamellipodi in anodizing group as voltage increased. 4. The activity of cells in MTT assay increased significantly in group 3 and 4 in comparison with group 1 and 2. However, there was no difference between group 3 and 4 at P<0.05. Proliferation of MG63 cells increased significantly in pore size($3-5.5{\mu}m$) of group 3 and 4 in comparison with in pore size($0.2-1{\mu}m$ ) of group 2.

  • In this study, we investigated effects of Monegy (mixture of Sophorae Radix, Panax ginseng, Salvia miltiorrhiza BUNGE) on epilate-induced hair-loss in dorsal region of C57/BL6 mice and external structure of human hair. For morphological and histological analysis in scalp of epilate-induced hair-loss animal model, we utilized several microscopic techniques, such as confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and LAS 4000. Confocal analysis showed the distribution of FITC-conjugated Monegy and penetration depth compared with normal and control group. Furthermore, when Monegy was topically administrated onto a C57BL6 mouse, it penetrated very well. The fluorescence intensity was increased upto 205 and 113 folds compared to normal and control group, respectively. Also, area of fluorescence was increased to upto 255 to 127 folds compared to normal and control group. Broad scale area of fluorescence in dermis region was observed in the Monegy-treated mice. Furthermore, Monegy induced upto 75% hair repair against depilation. It might be promoted via the induction of growth factors in hair follicle.

  • Excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle is process by which depolarization of the muscle fiber membrane, elicited by a nerve action potential, triggers the release of $Ca^{2+}$ from the sarcoplasmic reticulum(SR). The resulting rise in intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ concentration$([Ca^{2+}]_i)$ activates the troponin complex, thereby initiating the contraction of the muscle. The question remains as to what factors are involved in the inhibition of SR $Ca^{2+}$ release in fatigued muscle. The purpose of this study was determine whether ATP-sensitive $K^+(K_{ATP})$ channels are activated and contribute to decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ during fatigue development in the mouse skeletal muscle. To elucidate a role of $K_{ATP})$ in relation to ECC, I measured the modulation effects of $K_{ATP})$ channel blocker(glibenclamide) and opener(pinacidil) on $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ after fatiguing electrical field stimulation(FEFS). Intracellular $Ca^{2+}$ signals were recorded by conforcal laser microscopy(LSM 410) and monitored using the fluorescent $Ca^{2+}$-Sensitive indicator Fluo-3 AM. The results of this study were as followed: 1. The relative [Ca2'li after FEFS in the pre-glibenclamide-treated group was higher than the control. And relative $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ after FEFS in the pre-glibenclamide-treated group was lower than the control. 2. The relative $[Ca^{2+}]_i$ after FEFS for 3 min in the control, pre-glibenclamide-treated group and pre-pinacidil-treated group showed a similar pattern; the gradually significant decrease in $[Ca^{2+}]_i$. But, these decreasing pattern was most significant in the control. These findings suggest a tight relationship between $K_{ATP})$ and $Ca^{2+}$ in ECC during fatigue. Therefore, 1 thought that activation of $K_{ATP})$ channels may be one of mechanisms of the fatigue in skeletal muscle.

  • In industrial IoT environments, sensors generate data for their detection targets and deliver the data to IoT gateways. Therefore, managing large amounts of real-time sensor data is an essential feature for IoT gateways, and key-value storage engines are widely used to manage these sensor data. However, key-value storage engines used in IoT gateways do not take into account the characteristics of sensor data generated in industrial IoT environments, and this limits the performance of key-value storage engines. In this paper, we optimize the key-value storage engine by utilizing the features of sensor data in industrial IoT environments. The proposed optimization technique is to analyze the key, which is the input of a key-value storage engine, for further indexing. This reduces excessive write amplification and improves performance. We implement our optimization scheme in LevelDB and use the workload of the TPCx-IoT benchmark to evaluate our proposed scheme. From experimental results we show that our proposed technique achieves up to 21 times better than the existing scheme, and this shows that the proposed technique can perform high-speed data ingestion in industrial IoT environments.

본 연구에서는 이러한 미계측 두만강 유역을 대상으로 우선, 가용한 위성자료 및 광역지표모형(MERRA-2) 기반 NASA POWER(Prediction of Worldwide Energy Resource) 수문기상 자료와 SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) 모형을 활용하여 장기 수문영향을 평가하고자 한다.

  • Thisstudy demonstratessoil moisture and evapotranspiration performance using Korea Land Data Assimilation System (KLDAS) under Korea Land Information System (KLIS). Spin-up was repeated 8 times in 2018. In addition, low-resolution and high-resolution meteorological data were generated using meteorological data observed by Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), Rural Development Administration (RDA), Korea Rural Community Corporation (KRC), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.,Ltd. (KHNP), Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water), and Ministry of Environment (ME), and applied to KLDAS. And, to confirm the degree of accuracy improvement of Korea Low spatial resolution (hereafter, K-Low; 0.125°) and Korea High spatial resolution (hereafter, K-High; 0.01°), soil moisture and evapotranspiration to which Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, version 2 (MERRA-2) and ASOS-Spatial (ASOS-S) used in the previous study were applied were evaluated together. As a result, optimization of the initial boundary condition requires 2 time (58 point), 3 time (6 point), and 6 time (3 point) spin-up for soil moisture. In the case of evapotranspiration, 1 time (58 point) and 2 time (58 point) spin-ups are required. In the case of soil moisture to which MERRA-2, ASOS-S, K-Low, and K-High were applied, the mean of R2 were 0.615, 0.601, 0.594, and 0.664, respectively, and in the case of evapotranspiration, the mean of R2 were 0.531, 0.495, 0.656, and 0.677, respectively, indicating the accuracy of K-High was rated as the highest. The accuracy of KLDAS can be improved by securing a large number of ground observation data through the results of this study and generating high-resolution grid-type meteorological data. However, if the meteorological condition at each point is not sufficiently taken into account when converting the point data into a grid, the accuracy is rather lowered. For a further study, it is expected that higher quality data can be produced by generating and applying grid-type meteorological data using the parameter setting of IDW or other interpolation techniques.
