  • LPG explosion characteristics in non-uniform concentration was investigated with a 270 liter explosion vessel of which the scale is 100 cm${\times}$60 cm${\times}$45 cm. Vented explosion and closed explosion system were used. Experimental parameter were position of ignition source, nozzle diameter and flow rate of gas. Non uniform concentration was controlled by the nozzle diameter and flow rate. Explosion pressure were measured with strain type pressure sensor and the flame behavior was pictured with the video camera. Based on this experimental result, it was found that the flow rate of gas and the duration of gas injection are important factor for mixing the gas in the vessel. And as the increase the non-uniformity of gas concentration, explosion pressure and pressure rise rate Is decrease but the flame resident time in the vessel is increase. Therefore gas explosion to fire transition possibility will increase in non-uniform concentration gas explosion.

  • A study on the vented gas explosion characteristics were carried out with the liquified petroleum gas(LPG) which is used in domestics and industries fuel. To evaluate a damage by gas explosion and to predict a explosion hazards, a series of experiment have been performed in the regular hexahedron vessel of 270${\iota}$. A side of the vessel was made to setting a polyester diaphragm which was ruptured by explosion to simulate an accidental explosion which ruptured the window by explosion. Experimental parameters were LPG concentration, ignition position, venting area, a strength of diaphragm which was ruptured and distances from venting, Experimental results showed that vented gas explosion pressure was more affected by the diaphragm strength than the gas concentration, and the vented gas explosion pressure and blast wave pressure was increased with decreasing the venting area and increasing the strength of diaphragm. In this research we can find that a damage by vented explosion at the outside can be larger than the inside by blast wave pressure near the venting.

  • Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion(BLEVE) can cause not only economic damage to the plant but also serious casualties. LPG accidents account for 89.6 percent of all accidents caused by gas leaks in Korea over the past nine years, while casualties from accidents also account for 73 percent of all accidents, according to statistics from the Korea Gas Safety Corporation. In addition, a potential explosion and a fire accident from one LPG storage tank may affect the nearby storage tanks, causing secondary and tertiary damage (domino effect). The safety distance standards for LPG used by LPG workplaces, charging stations, and homes in Korea have become stricter following the explosion of LPG charging stations in Bucheon. The safety distance regulation is divided into regulations based on the distance damage and the risk including frequency. This study suggests two approaches to optimizing the safety distance based on the just consequence and risk including frequencies. Using the Phast 7.2 Risk Assessment software by DNV GL, the explosion overpressure and heat radiation were derived according to the distance caused by BLEVE in the worst-case scenario, and accident and damage probability were derived by considering the probit function and domino effect. In addition, the safety distance between LPG tanks or LPG charging stations was derived to minimize damage effects by utilizing these measures.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the transition mechanism and prevention mechanism of gas explosion to fire. Transition phenomena of explosion to fire of LPG in the explosion vessel of its size of TEX>$100 cm {\times} 60 cm {\times} 45 cm$ was visualized using the high speed video camera and the mechanism was analysed from the videograph. Newspaper size of $30cm {\times} 20cm$ was used for combustible sample in this experiments and LPG-air mixture was ignited by 10 ㎸ electric spark. Experimental parameter was gas concentration, size of vent area and position of combustible solid. Size of vent area were varied as $10cm {\times} 9cm, 13cm {\times} 10cm, 27cm {\times} 20cm, 40cm {\times} 27cm$, and the position of combustible was varied in 4 point. Carbon dioxide was used to study the prevention mechanism of explosion to fire transition of LPG. Based on this experiment we can find that transition possibility of explosion to fire on solid combustible from explosion is depends on concentration of LPG-air mixture and the exposure time of solid combustibles in high temperature atmosphere of flame and burnt gas. And cooling or inerting of the atmosphere after explosion can be prevent the transition of explosion to fire on solid combustibles from gas explosion.

  • We have garnered 3,593 data of gas accidents reported for 12 years from 1995, and then analyzed the LPG vaporizer accidents according to their types and causes based on the classified database. According to the results the gas rupture has been the most common accident followed by the release, explosion and then fire accidents, the most frequent accident-occurring sub-cause is LPG check floater faults. In addition, we have applied the Poisson Probability Functions to predict the most-likely probabilities of fire, explosion, release and rupture with the LPG vaporizer in the upcoming 5 years. In compliance with Poisson Probability Functions results, in the item which occurs below 3 "LPG-Vaporizer-Fire", in the item which occurs below 5 "LPG-Vaporizer-Products Faults-Check Floater" and the item which occurs below 10 appeared with "LPG-Vaporizer-Products Faults". From this research we have assured the successive database updating will highly improve the anticipating probability accuracy and thus it will play a key role as a significant safety- securing guideline against the gas disasters.

  • The demand for hydrogen is steadily increasing every year, and the facilities to produce and transfer hydrogen are being increased as well. Therefore, the possibility of a critical accident at hydrogen is expected to increase. Furthermore, the materials most likely to cause accidents at industrial sites are LPG 61%, hydrogen 12%, and LNG 10%, and the frequency of accidents due to these three combustible gases is relatively high. Thus, a CFD simulation was used to compute the explosion risk of danger-frequent combustible gases-hydrogen, LNG, and LPG-within a limited space, and the outcomes were compared and analyzed to review the risk of explosion of each gase within a limited space.

  • Recently, various engineering approaches have been widely used in the accident investigation field to identify the cause of the accident and to predict damage by accident. Computational analysis is the most commonly used method of accident investigation technique. This technique is mainly used to identify the mechanism of the accident generation and to determine the cause when it is difficult to reproduce the situation at the time of the accident or when it is impossible to perform a reproduction experiment. In this study, The gas explosion analysis for LPG explosion accident generated by defect of the blocking action was performed to determine the accident object, gas leakage amount and predicted the damage caused by the accident using 3D laser scanner and FLACS program. We can quantify the explosive power by LPG gas accident and predict the gas leakage amount, damage by accident and evaluate the stability of the structure through this study. In the future, This method can be widely used in the field of gas safety by improving the reliability and validity of the analysis.

  • As one of the explosion suppression methods of LPG tank exposed to hot environment by an accident or fire, some material which has large heat capacity and thermal conductivity can be installed inside the LPG tank in order to suppress the temperature increasement of tank wall. In the present study, theoretical model for the horizontally locating cylindrical LPG tank with and without the aluminum explosion suppression material has been developed to predict the characteristics of system. As a parametric study, effects of two major parameters, thickness of material filling and initial vapor volume fraction, on the time variation of wall temperature, temperature and pressure in tank are numerically examined. The results of present study show that the thickness of material filling does not give big differences in the suppression characteristics when the thickness of filling is larger than three inches. In case of material filling, there are marked suppression effects to the increase-ment of wall temperature, average vapor temperature and pressure in tank compared with the case of no filling.
