  • This study effect of engine oils on regulated fuel economy and emissions including particulate matter (PM) to provide basic data for management of engine oil in vehicles. Three engine oils (Group III base oil, Group III genuine oil with additive package and synthetic oil with poly alpha olefins (PAOs)) were used in one gasoline, one LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) and two diesel vehicles. In the case of diesel vehicles, one is a diesel vehicle without DPF (diesel particulate filter) other is a diesel vehicle with DPF. In this study, the US EPA emission test cycle FTP-75, representing city driving, was used. HORIBA, PIERBURG, and AVL gas analyzers were used to measure the fuel economy and regulated emissions such as CO, NOx, and THC. The number of PM was measured using a PPS (pegasor particle sensor). And, the shape of PMs was analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscope). The effects of oil type on fuel economy, exhaust gas, and PM were not significant because engine oil consumption by evaporation and combustion in the cylinder is very tiny. Fuel and vehicle type were dominant factors in fuel economy and emissions. HC emission from gasoline vehicles was higher than that from other vehicles and NOx emission from diesel vehicles was higher than that from other vehicles. The number of PM was not affected by the engine oil, but by the driving pattern and fuel. The shapes of the PM, sampled from each vehicle using any test engine oil, were similar.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of gasoline fuel to the LPI engine. Firing test bench was used in order to assess the effect on gasoline-injected LPI engine. Gasoline fuel was supplied into the reverse direction(3-4-2-1 cylinder) at 3.0 bar with commercial gasoline fuel pump. Engine test was performed using the firing test mode at end of line. The deviations of excess air ratio of each cylinder and maximum combustion pressure using gasoline fuel were within 0.1 and $1{\sim}2\;bar$. Engine start time was measured with changing coolant temperature at $20^{\circ}C,\;40^{\circ}C,\;80^{\circ}C$, respectively. Residual gasoline volume in the fuel line was measured about 32 cc after firing test and it was less than 2 cc within 10 seconds purging. To simulate the end of line, the residual gasoline in the fuel line was purged during 5 and 10 seconds. Start time of LPI engine with LPG fuel were 0.61 and 0.58 seconds. This work showed that severe problems such as misfiring and liner scuffing were not occurred applying gasoline fuel to LPI engine.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the diesel retrofit program which have been proceeded for the last 7 years in Gyeonggi-do. Diesel retrofit programs in Gyeonggi-do consist of the attachment of DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), p-DPF (partial-DPF) and DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst), switching to LPG engine, scraping an old cars. Emission reduction by diesel retrofit program was estimated $N_2O$ 8,313.4 ton/year, PM10 3,626.4 ton/year, VOC 8,078.5 ton/year in 2010. The benefit-cost analysis shows that the 964 billion wons of benefits are greater than the 853 billion wons of total costs. Diesel retrofit programs could be one of the most effective measures to improve PM10 concentration in metropolitan area. But retrofit programs also need to be properly maintained by each vehicle.

  • The one of the most important subject to develop a LPDi engine is to suppress the generation of bubble inside LPG direct injector. For the purpose of this, in this study, the analogy visualization injector to visualize the generation and behavior of bubble, is manufactured and the bubbling phenomenon and behaviors are visualized and studied. The bubble inside the injector is generated at injection hole and after rising by buoyancy, it disappear around the top of a nozzle. The number of bubble generated is little changed regardless of the lapse of time but it is increased remarkably as the temperature around the injector is increased. With injection, the temperature around the injector at which the bubble is generated in_cylinder is much lower than that without injection because the transient pressure drop of fuel by injection.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is regarded as an alternative fuel for spark ignition engine due to similar or even higher octane number. In addition, LPG has better fuel characteristics including high vaporization characteristic and low carbon/hydrogen ratio leading to a reduction in carbon dioxide emission. Recently, development of LPG direct injection system started to improve performance of vehicles fuelled with LPG. However, spray characteristics of LPG were not well understood, which is should be known to develop injector for LPG direct injection engines. In this study, effects of operation condition including ambient pressure, temperature, and injection pressure on spray properties of n-butane were evaluated and compared to gasoline in a multi-hole injector. As general characteristics of both fuels, spray penetration becomes smaller with an increase of ambient pressure as well as a reduction in the injection pressure. However, it is found that evaporation of n-butane was faster compared to gasoline under all experimental condition. As a result, spray penetration of n-butane was shorter than that of gasoline. This result was due to higher vapor pressure and lower boiling point of n-butane. On the other hand, spray angle of both fuels do not vary much except under high ambient temperature conditions. Furthermore, spray shape of n-butane spray becomes completely different from that of gasoline at high ambient temperature conditions due to flash boiling of n-butane.

  • SULEV (Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle) which is one of the emission standards in Fleet Average System introduced to Korea from 2009 is known as the most severe standard to achieve with internal combustion engine. Considering low sales volume of hybrid vehicles in Korea, vehicle manufacturers are required to develop SULEV technologies for conventional gasoline and LPG vehicles to meet the future Fleet Average standard. In this study, the comparison of emissions has been made between SULEV developed and ULEV LPG vehicles mainly produced in this time. To estimate the emission reduction of SULEV vehicles, CVS-75 and NIER test modes have been used. CVS-75 has been used for emission certification of gasoline and LPG vehicles. NIER modes cover various average vehicle speed and reflect Korean real driving patterns better than CVS-75. The test results show that SULEV LPG vehicles have very high potential to reduce $NO_x$ in regulated emissions, $N_2O$ in green house gases and toluene in VOCs. However, SULEV LPG vehicles don't affect much on the reduction of CO and total green house gases.

  • The use of fossil is causing enviromental all over the world. So hydrogen energy is attracting attention as one of the alternative. The government announced that 30% of the air pollution is because of the Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle. In addition, they plans to reduce Internal Combustion Engine Vehicles by 2030 and increase (electric vehicles, EV) or (fuel cell vehicle, FCV). The FCV is evaluated as a next-generation green car because it has a long driving distance and short charging time. However, the hydrogen industry is not able to expand due to the lack of refueling infrastrucutre. This paper predicts the site of hydrogen refueling stations for the expansion of the hydrogen industry and proposes a method to supply hydrogen multi energy filling stations.

  • To suppress the bubble generated in the liquid LPG direct injector is the most important to develop the LPDi engine. It was found in the previous study that bubbling phenomenon in the injector of the LPDi engine is decisively influenced by pressure of fuel and temperature around the injector. Therefore, in this study, the effect on suppressing the bubbling in the LPDi injector by high pressurization of fuel is analyzed and the spray characteristics are also studied. As a result, it is found that the bubbling in the LPDi injector is radically suppressed when the pressure of fuel is over 50MPa. The bubbling is suppressed when the pressure of fuel is over 3MPa if the inserted position of the injector is considered. Also, it is confirmed that the higher the pressure of fuel is the longer spray tip penetration and is the larger spray angle. As the ambient pressure increases, spray tip penetration decreases and spray angle increases due to the increase of drag force.

  • Generally speaking, natural gas possesses several characteristics that make it desirable as an engine fuel : for example (1) lower production cost, (2) abundant commodity and (3) cleaner energy source than gasoline. Due to the physical characteristics of natural gas, the volumetric efficiency and flame speed of a natural gas engine are lower than those of a gasoline engine, which results in a power loss of 10-20% when compared to a convensional gasoline engine. This paper describes the results of a research to improve the performance of a natural gas engine through the modification and controls of air/fuel ratio, spark timing advance and supercharging effect by forced air supply method.

  • This study focus on the effect of engine specification, driving conditions and the vehicle type on the idle emission characteristics. In order to obtain the characteristics of exhaust emissions, 1,260 vehicles of spark ignition engine are sampled and investigated. The exhaust emissions are measured with a CO/HC emission gas analyzer. The Sl engine vehicles are investigated by the effect of various exhaust emission parameters such as vehicle milage, engine specification, valve trains and fuels. The results show that the amount of CO and HC emission is not directly related to the driving mileage of the vehicle. However, the engine specifications and fuels such as the type of valve train and piston displacement have influence on the exhaust emissions. In addition, the LPG vehicle emits more CO and HC than gasoline vehicle. Based on the test results of SI vehicles, the influence of excess air and displacement volume are discussed.
