  • To study vegetational structure of the Korean warm temperate region fifty two plots were surveyed in evergreen broad-leaved forests of southern islands. The vegetational structures among sites were dissimilar in virtue of geographical isolation and artificial disturbance. The surveyed plots were generally classified into three groups; the first, the group in which plant succession has proceeded naturally, the second, the group which was disturbed and managed for a long time, the third, the group which was afforested and has been succeeded into evergreen broad-leaved forest. The species with constancy over 80% in fifty two plots were Machilus thunbergii, Eurya japonica, Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermidium, Cinnamomum japonicum, and Ligustrum japonicum. The community of Lozoste lancifolia, which is assumed to be a climax community of the Korean warm temperate region, remains in Chudo and Aedo. The secondary succession of seashore forest which were disturbed in the past will be done into Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii

  • We have screened the cytoprotective effect on $\gamma$-ray radiation induced oxidative stress from eighteen Korean plant extracts. Querus salicina, Clerodendron trichotomum, Lamium amplexicaule, Lozoste lancifolia and Malus baccata were found to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). As a result, extracts of these plants reduced cell death of Chinese hamster lung fibroblast (V79-4) cells induced by $H_2O_2$ treatment. In addition, these extracts protected cell death of V79-4 cells damaged by $\gamma$-ray radiation. In addition, these extracts scavenged ROS generated by radiation. Taken together, the results suggest that Quercus salicina, Clerodendron trichotomum, Lamium amplexicaule, Lozoste lancifolia and Malus baccata protect V79-4 cells against oxidative damage by radiation through scavenging ROS.

  • The vegetation of Odongdo island was surveyed over twenty-nine times from April, 1982 to August, 1983. This island is located at 127。46'05'∼127。39'37'E. longitude and 34。40'20'∼34。48'14'N. latitude. The vegetation of this island consisted of 94 families, 261 genera, 314 species, 53 varieties and 6 formae. And among them were 170 species of woody plants and 203 species of herbs. The community of evergreen broad-leaved trees comprised a total of 44 species including Sasa coreana Nakai and camellia japonica L. and the distribution of evergreen broad-leaved trees was good in this island as a whole. Sasa coreana Nakai, Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii Nakai, Ficus erecta Thunb., Ficus nipponica Fr. et Sav, Stauntonia hexaphylla (Thunb.) Decne, Cinnamomum japonicum Sieb., Machilus thunbergii S. et Z., Lozoste lancifolia (S. et Z.) Bl., Ilex intergra Thunb., Camellia japonica Thunb., Hedera rhombea Bean and Ardisia japonica Bl. etc. in this island were autochthonous flora and their preservation is required.

  • The Kong-Chung Jung's relics made of wooden materials were pre-examined for conservation. Kong-Chung Jung was a General of the Chosun Dynasty and his weapons were made of wood. The pre-examining method was focused on the quality and species of the wooden weapons. X-ray radiation was used for the observation of wood structure, and the condition of the relics was relatively good although they contained some cracks. The examination of species using optical microscope showed that the species of each relics were Pinus densiflora of hanging scroll pole, Lozoste lancifolia of a top of flagnole, Fraxinus sp. of a flagpole, Phyllostachys sp. of arrow shafts. For the conservation of the relics, celyl alcohol as dimensional stability chemicals was used and poly(vinyl acetate) and epoxy adhesives were also used for the joining and restoring of the relics.

  • The taxonomy of the broad-leaf evergreen trees (4 genera, 5 species) of Lauraceae was studied by the morphological characteristics of stipules. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) The stipules of Lauraceae were arranged alternately with 5-31 stipules of simple leaf. The venations or stipules were basal reticulate and pinnated vein. The shapes of stipule blade were oblong, oblanceolate, rhomboid and oval. The stipule apex was acuminate and obtuse, the stipule base was attenuate, and the stipule margin was entire margin. The trichomes of stipules were sericeous, tomentose and villous. The five species of Lauraceae could be identified by the morphological characteristics of stipules. 2) The morphologically changing forms of stipule vein were classified into three groups; A form - the form of pinnate vein with the distinguished main vein (lozoste lancifolia), B form - the three vein grows into the form of basal reticulate vein (Neolitsea sericea, Cinnamomum japonicum and C. camphora), C form - the parallel vein grows into the form of basal reticulate vein (Marhilus thunbergii). 3) The changing forms of stipule's width from stipule "a" to "j" were three forms; (1) a>d>g>j form: C. japonicum, C. camphora and I. lancifolia, (2) a>cj,(aj,(a
