동해 포항 연안 문치가자미(Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae)의 성숙과 산란 (Maturity and Spawning of the Marbled Flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae off the Coast of Pohang, East Sea)

  • Marbled flounder Pseudopleuronectes yokohamae is a commercially important flatfish in the coastal waters of the East Sea off Pohang, Korea. Maturity and spawning dynamics of P. yokohamae were investigated based on samples collected by gill net and long line in the coastal waters off Pohang from January 2013 to December 2014. We analyzed monthly changes in maturity stage, gonadosomatic index (GSI), egg diameter, fecundity, and total length at 50% group maturity. We found that the spawning period was December to February, wherein fecundity ranged from 55,760 eggs at 20.40 cm total length (TL) to 1,559,007 eggs at 46.6 cm TL. The relationship between TL and fecundity (F) was F = 0.0017 TL3.5604 (R2 = 0.6984), and F increased with increasing TL. We estimated the TL at 50% group maturity as 27.4 cm for female and 23.5 cm for male P. yokohamae, respectively. The results from this research will aid in the development of policies on season and minimum catch length for sustainable production of P. yokohamae. We propose that it is necessary to conduct long-term ecological monitoring for this species because biological properties such as spawning ecology and growth performance are being affected by climate change.

축제식(築堤式) 폐양식장을 활용한 고창 갯벌 복원계획 수립 (A Establishment of Mud Flat Restoration Plan in Gochang Using Abandoned Embanked Farms)

  • This study was started with the objective of restoring abandoned embanked farms, which are recently increasing, to mud flat by putting in least amount of energy in the aspect of environmental restoration. For the direction and establishment of the proposal for the restoration of mud flat using embanked farms, a case of Maipo Wetland in Hongkong was analyzed, and a proposal was prepared considering the condition of mud flat in Gochang. The restoration of mud flat in Gochang is intended to create various wetland ecological spaces as well as to provide opportunities for experience, education, recreation, and tourism. Effort was made to development an environment closest to the local ecological environment considering the shape and topographical condition of existing abandoned farms. For construction of the habitat, a target species was chosen and the plan for selection, planting, and management of species of trees suitable for the target species was established. In addition, the water level will be controlled by water gates to conform to the resting, spawning, breeding, and migration period considering the behavioral pattern of waders, the target species. The research on the restoration of mud flat in Korea is in incipient stage and this study provided an opportunity to review the possibility of restoration of abandoned embanked farms to mud flat. For the success of mud flat restoration from a long-term perspective, development of acclimating design infrastructure, technology improvement for mud flat restoration, and basis of partnership for the maintenance should be prepared in a systematical way.

초등학생 대상의 산림치유 프로그램에 대한 체계적 문헌고찰 (A Systematic Review of Forest Therapy Programs for Elementary School Students)

  • Purpose: There are many forest and outdoor programs being offered but systematic reviews of effects are lacking. This study was done to identify content, format, and strategies of forest therapy programs for elementary school students. Methods: Literature search using keywords in English and Korean was performed using 6 electronic databases in December 2016. Search participants were elementary school students and interventions conducted in the forest. Seventeen forest therapy studies were selected for evaluation. Risk of Bias Assessment tool for non-randomized study was used for quality assessment. Results: All studies were quasi-experimental designs. Forest therapy programs included various activities in forests such as experience of five senses, meditation in the forest, walking in the forest, ecological play, observation of animals and insects. All studies used psychosocial health variables and forest healing programs had positive effects on sociality, depression, anxiety, self-esteem, stress, aggression, anger, and school adjustment. Limitations of these studies were vague reporting of the study, lack of ethical review and rigorous research designs. Conclusion: Forest therapy for elementary school child can be an effective way to improve psychosocial health. Future studies with rigorous study designs are needed to assess long-term effects of forest therapy on physical and psychosocial health.

강화 남부 갯벌의 퇴적환경 변화 (Changes of Sedimentary Environments in the Southern Tidal Flat of Kanghwa Island)

  • The southern tidal flat of Kanghwa Island with an area of approximately $90km^2$ is one of the biggest flats on the west coast of Korea. Surface sediments for sedimentary analyses were sampled at 83 stations in August 1997, September 1999 and August 2000. The very poorly-sorted mud sediments were predominant in the eastern part of the tidal flat, whereas the poorly-sorted sand-mud mixed sediments were dominant in the western part. The area of muddy sediment distribution diminished, but that of sandy mud sediment extended to southeastward tidal flat for three years. In the western part of tidal flat, deposition occurred during the period of spring to summer, whereas erosion occurred in winter. Sediment accumulation rates during three years indicated that the sediments deposited continuously in the eastern part of tidal flat, whereas eroded in the western part of tidal flat. Recently, construction of artificial structures such as new airport, island-connecting bridges and dikes near the tidal flat might change tidal current and river flow pattern. In order to reduce the ecological damage and to preserve tidal-flat environment, it is necessary to Investigate long-term impacts on sedimentary environment and ecology.

환경부 전국자연환경조사사업의 문제점과 개선방안 - 미국의 사례를 중심으로 - (A Study on the Master Plan of Natural Environment Conservation compared with National Biological Survey in USA)

  • The Master Plan of Natural Environment Conservation in Korea by Ministry of Environment has been carried out since 1986. The 2nd 10-year survey started in 1997, and there are three major parts in the Master Plan : First, the basic natural environment survey, second, sites in special features of ecological characteristics such as uninhabitable islands, wetlands, etc, and third, biological species featuring status of habitat, and population dynamics. However the information in the Master Plan is very fragmented and collected data are not so abundant due to insufficient man-power and unsynchronized survey time/season. In this regard this paper examined the similar National Biological Survey in USA and compared the differences with the Master Plan in Korea. The Master Plan in Korea should separate the management zone based on hydrological characteristics, and in each zone we should set a management goal in the long term basis. Secondly the species list is not so meaningful that we must concentrate more on research activities. In each taxonomical group we set up hypotheses and research goals. Thirdly local residents and communities should be involved in research so that enhanced biological diversity should benefit people in areas. Lastly legislation and laws should be reexamined and rectified to provide information to the managers that deals with natural resources, expecially when conflicting with economic matters.

리기다소나무와 잣나무 낙엽의 분해율 및 분해과정에 따른 영양염류 함량 변화 (Decay rate and Nutrient Dynamics during Litter Decomposition of Pinus rigida and Pinus koraiensis)

  • 국가장기생태연구사업의 일환으로 국내 주요 조림수종인 리기다소나무와 잣나무 낙엽의 분해율 및 분해과정에 따른 영양염류 함량 변화를 파악하였다. 분해 21개월경과 후 리기다소나무 낙엽과 잣나무 낙엽의 잔존률은 각각 $58.27{\pm}4.13$, $54.08{\pm}4.32$으로 잣나무 낙엽의 분해가 리기다소나무 낙엽보다 빠르게 진행되는 것으로 나타났다. 21개월경과 후 리기다소나무 낙엽과 잣나무 낙엽의 분해상수(k)는 각각 0.95, 1.08로 잣나무 낙엽의 분해상수가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 리기다소나무 낙엽과 잣나무 낙엽의 초기 C/N 비율은 각각 64.4, 40.6 이었으나 21개월경과 후에는 각각 41.0, 18.9로 점차 감소하였고, C/P 비율은 리기다소나무 낙엽과 잣나무 낙엽에서 초기에 각각 529.8, 236.5에서 21개월경과 후 384.1, 205.2로 감소하였다. 낙엽의 초기 N,P,K,Ca,Mg 함량은 리기다소나무 낙엽에서 각각 6.78, 0.83, 2.84, 0.99, 2.59 mg/g 이었으며, 잣나무 낙엽에서 각각 10.90, 1.87, 5.82, 4.79, 2.00 mg/g으로 마그네슘을 제외한 원소의 함량은 잣나무에서 높았다. 21개월 경과 후 N,P,K,Ca,Mg 잔존률은 리기다소나무 낙엽에서 각각 88.4, 77.6, 26.7, 50.5, 44.5%이었으며 잣나무 낙엽에서 각각 114.4, 61.3, 7.6, 115.2, 72.0%로 나타났다.

Fertilization Effects on Understory Vegetation Biomass and Structure in Four Different Plantations

  • Biomass and species diversity of understory vegetation after fertilization were studied for 28-year-old Quercus acutissima plantation (MQA), 29-year-old Pinus densiflora plantation (MPD), 8-year-old Betula platyphylla var. japonica plantation after coal reclamation (YBP), and 4-year-old Pinus densiflora plantation after forest fire (YPD) in central Korea. Nitrogen + phosphorus + potassium (6:4:1) fertilizer was applied for 3 years from 2004. Thereafter photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and understory species richness and diversity were measured in late July-early August 2006. PAR (${\mu}mol\;m^{-2}S^{-1}$) was higher at the fertilization treatment (100.9) than at the control (67.0) for MQA while was lower at the fertilization treatment (156.5) than at the control (268.7) for MPD. Total understory biomass (t $ha^{-1}$) was lower at the fertilization plot (1.8) than at the control plot (3.0) for YPD, however, there were no differences in biomass between fertilization and control plots for MQA, MPD and YBP. Total species number of understory vegetation was higher for fertilization than for control at MPD (47 vs. 45) and YPD (21 vs. 13), and was higher for mature plantations (33 vs. 37 for MQA and 47 vs. 45 for MPD) than for young plantations (16 vs. 16 for YBP and 21 vs. 13 for YPD). Species richness and diversity were higher at the fertilization treatment than at the control for MQA, YBP, and YPD while were lower at the fertilization treatment than at the control for MPD, however, the differences were not statistically significant. Our results indicate that there were no consistent patterns in light conditions, biomass and species richness and diversity of understory vegetation following fertilization. More detailed long-term studies with different fertilizer applications would be necessary to conclude the influence of fertilization on understory vegetation in the region.

생태축 연결을 고려한 하천습지의 적정 후보지 선정 방안 (A Selection Methodology of the Appropriate Candidate Sites of Riverine Wetlands for Ecological Connection)

  • 현재 국내에서는 전국내륙습지 일반조사 및 습지보전기본계획 등의 장기적인 계획을 통해 습지 정책이 추진되고 있다. 그러나 대부분의 정책은 습지의 면적, 분포 및 생물다양성 등 현황 파악에 초점을 두고 있으며, 습지 생태계를 하나의 유기체로 보존 및 관리하는 것에 대한 인식이 부족한 상황이다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 홍수터, 생물다양성, 서식지 제공, 관광자원 등의 기능적인 측면을 고려하여 생태축 연결이 가능한 하천습지 후보지 선정을 위한 방법론을 제시하였다. 이를 토대로 본 연구에서는 낙동강 수계에 있는 우포늪, 화포천습지, 주남저수지 3개의 습지와 생태축 연결이 가능한 후보지를 선정하고자 하였다. 본 연구에서는 낙동강 수계의 15개 표준유역 내에 존재하는 63개의 습지와 7개의 후보지를 대상으로 적지 분석을 수행하였고, 산정된 점수를 이용하여 생태축 연결에 가장 적합한 하천습지 후보지를 선정하였다. 후보지 평가를 위해 9개의 평가요소를 선정하고, 해당 평가요소들에 분위수를 이용한 점수화 기법을 적용하여 분석을 실시하였다. 결과적으로, 우포늪2(호포)가 36점으로 가장 높은 점수를 받아 생태축 연결 가능성이 가장 높은 후보지로 선정되었다. 따라서 우포늪2(호포)가 홍수터, 서식지, 생물다양성 증진 및 관광자원으로서 역할이 가능한 동시에 생태축 연결에 가장 적합한 것으로 판단하였다.

임해준설매립지 토양의 깊이별 이화학적 특성 (Physicochemical Properties of Depth-based Soil on the Reclaimed Dredging Area)

  • Through analyzing the specific physicochemical alterations in depth-based soil at reclaimed dredging area, the baseline data were provided for developing the reclaimed dredging area as natural landscape planting sites and ecological-landscape sites based on the soil improvement technology. There was no physical disturbance for 15 to 20 years in Gwangyang Bay reclaimed dredging area after reclamation. Physicochemical examinations of the soil were performed based on the vertical depth. Results of physicochemical analysis such as pH, electric conductivity, total salt contents, silt, clay contents, available phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sodium, chlorine, and sodium-adsorption ratio showed increasing patterns with the depth while total organic contents, total nitrogen, and sand showed decreasing patterns. Potassium as an exchangeable cation, showed similar distribution patterns between the shallow and deep soil. This result strongly implied that long-term exposure to natural rainfall in reclaimed dredging area altered soil characteristics related to salinity. This research demonstrated that there were no remarkable differences in physicochemical characteristics at soil depth and groundwater table height, suggesting a baseline data for developing reclaimed dredging area. Additional investigation is required for different reclaimed dredging areas. Also, additional monitoring and examination are need on plant communities and time variable alteration in the soil to test the feasibility of reclaimed dredging areas as natural landscape planting sites and ecological-landscape sites.

람사르협약의 습지보호지역으로 지정된 전북 고창 운곡습지의 곤충상에 관한 연구 (Insect Fauna of Ungok Wetland in Gochang, Jeonbuk, Korea, Designated as a Wetland Protection Area at Ramsar Convention)

  • Insect fauna were surveyed in 2011 at Ungok wetland, Obeygol, located in Gochang, Jeonbuk, Korea. In total, 149 species belonging to 11 orders and 57 families were surveyed. Among them, Lepidopterans composed 23.5% (35 species) of the total insect numbers surveyed, comprising the most abundant group, and followed by Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Odonata with a composition of 22.1% (33 species), 17.4% (26 species), and 10.1% (15 species), respectively. Bothrogonia japonica Ishihara was the most dominant species, and followed by Gastrophysa atrocyanea Motschulsky and Celastrina argiolus (Linnaeus). Phytophagous insects accounted for 60 percent of the total species. Dominance index was the highest in spring by 0.21. Diversity, richness, and evenness indices were the highest in summer by 4.07, 11.84 and 0.96, respectively. In the study area, the legally-protect species were grouped into five groups; 9 export-restricted species, 17 endemic species, 28 indicator species, 1 climate-sensitive biological indicator and 3 southern characteristic species. Additionally, twenty forest insect pest species were surveyed, belonging to 5 orders and 15 families. Therefore, it is required to conduct long-term monitoring and appropriate management based on the ecological characteristic of the habitats to continuously conserve and maintain of wetland.
