  • Virtual world and simulation need large scale map rendering. However, rendering too many vertices is a computationally complex and time-consuming process. Some game development companies have developed 3D LOD objects for high-speed rendering based on distance between camera and 3D object. Terrain physics simulation researchers need a way to recognize the original object shape from 3D LOD objects. In this paper, we proposed simply automatic LOD framework using point cloud data (PCD). This PCD was created using a 6-direct orthographic ray. Various experiments are performed to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. We hope the proposed automatic LOD generation framework can play an important role in game development and terrain physic simulation.

  • Recently, there has been a growing interest in the life cycle management field of buildings through the introduction of BIM. And as BIM application is expanded, BIM ordering guidelines and guidelines are becoming popular. Also, as diverse forms of buildings including super high-rise building have been generalized, attention to the importance of curtain walls that are advantageous for construction period shortening, building lighting and quality homogenization has been increasing. However, all BIM information from the design stage to the maintenance stage is not accumulated in stages. And the input information is not improved in proportion to the level of appearance of the BIM model. Also, current curtain wall designs rely heavily on curtain wall consulting firms or utilize accumulated data from existing processes. In this study, curtain wall components, shape and property information were derived by analyzing BIM guidelines and curtain wall construction standards to contribute to solving these problems. And the curtain wall smart BIM library which can be converted according to LOD(Level of Development) has been produced and its applicability has been verified. Through the library, curtain wall information can be systematically managed in the library from design to construction and maintenance. And the library will contribute to the expansion and activation of the BIM library market in the future.

  • Recently, BIM has been actively introduced in construction projects. In particular, the introduction of BIM in cost estimating process is expected to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the cost estimate. However, the quantity calculation and BoQ documents preparation process still require manual work. Although the BIM model may support quantification process, it is still problematic that the level of detail of the model must be very detailed to meet the items in BoQ. To address this, it is necessary to analyse the LOD criteria and to analyze the extent to which quantity can be computed according to the level of detail in the BIM model. For the analysis of LOD-based work items, the work item grades were divided into A,B, and C. In this study, the ratio and cost of each item that can be calculated at the LOD level in the detailed design phase are reviewed for each type of work, and the method for improving the quantity calculation using BIM is proposed. In the LOD 300 stage(Detailed design stage), the largest number of items in the class B, the major improvement class, are window and glass work. In addition, the most expensive type of work was analyzed by reinforced concrete work. In the future, it is necessary to suggest appropriate improvement way for items with high item ratios and items with high cost ratios. The results of this study are expected to be used as a BIM-based cost estimation or as basic data for improving the current BoQ system.

  • Stakeholders of a construction project expect cost savings through fast and accurate cost analysis by performing BIM-based quantity take-off (BQT). However, authors have observed that there can be discrepancies in the results of BQT depending on the level of development (LOD) and modeling methods. In addition, since quantity take-off methods are different depending on the construction work items, the combination of LOD, modeling methods of BIM, features of construction work items can cause serious overestimate or underestimate in BQT results. It is necessary to identify what kind of problems can happen and how those problems can be avoided in various construction work items, since the discrepancy of quantity take-off results has great impact on not only cost analysis but also the determination of contract amount and it can cause claims, poor construction quality, cost overruns, and many others later in the construction project. Therefore, this paper focuses the identification of issues and problems of BQT at each construction work item level based on two categorizations of structural works and interior works.

  • The people in the AEC industry have acknowledged and long struggled to solve the critical low productivity issue of the entire construction industry. Integrated Project Delivery has been suggested as a solution to this problem and to take this into practice many countries have come up with BIM guidelines. In order to make this a success, BIM design process and LOD must be dealt in advance. The following research has selected 3 out of 16 guidelines that specifically describes BIM process and LOD, and intends to fully acknowledge its concept by comparing the approach and definition of LOD in the BIM Design Process.

  • With the recent advancement of surveying and technology, the spatial data acquisition rates and precision have been improved continually. As the updates of spatial data are rapid, and the size of data increases in line with the advancing technology, the LOD (Level of Detail) algorithm has been adopted to process data expressions in real time in a streaming format with spatial data divided precisely into separate steps. The existing GRID analysis utilizes the single DEM, as it is, in examining and analyzing all data outside the analysis area as well, which results in extending the analysis time in proportion to the quantity of data. Hence, this study suggests a method to reduce analysis time and data throughput by acquiring and analyzing DEM data necessary for GRID analysis in real time based on the area of analysis and the level of precision, specifically for streaming DEM data, which is utilized mostly for 3D geographic information service.

  • In recent years, according to the increase of interests in indoor space, various researches are being carried out for the construction and services of indoor spatial information. BIM data is very useful to build indoor spatial information. Accordingly, many studies for the use of BIM data on GIS part are in progress. In order to take advantage of BIM data on GIS part, the conversion technology for building indoor data and visualization techniques are required. However, most of the previous researches are focused on the conversion technology to construct indoor spatial information by importing BIM data into GIS applications while there is few research on visualization. In this study, an indoor LOD(Level of Detail) model is proposed to apply to on indoor facility management system when indoor data was constructed based on BIM data for the linkage between BIM and GIS.

  • In architecture projects, BIM library has widely been using for prefabrication of products and design process. However, since the shape of structures is different by each project in civil engineering projects and a shape representation system is complicated, it is not easy to develop a standardized BIM library. To solve these issues, this study develops BIM library based on standardized 2D shop drawings for civil structures. The standardized shop drawings, which are the targets of the BIM library model, should be first selected. Besides, in order to define modeling scope with the level of general and shop drawings for each structure, LOD(Level of Detail) and breakdown structure are determined, and development methods of families of 3D object type including 2D profile and rebar through commercial software are established. With these, properties of BIM library are configured, and a utilization model of the BIM libraries is constructed for 3D modeling and a simulation using the BIM library. Therefore, this study can identify properties that are necessary when IFC schema is configured for civil engineering projects. For future, it is expected that easiness of BIM design for the civil engineering projects and generation, management, and analysis system of BIM library for road projects will be secured.

  • Current MEP designs are mostly applied by 2D-based design methods and tend to focus on simple modeling or geometry information expression such as converting 2D-written drawings into 3D modeling without taking advantage of the strength of BIM application. To increase the demand for BIM-based MEP design, geometric information, and property information of each member of the 3D model must be conveniently linked from the phase of the Design Development (DD) to the phase of Construction Document (CD). To conveniently implement a detailed model at each phase, the detailed level of each member of the 3D model must be specific, and an automatic generation of objects at each phase and automatic detailing module for each LOD are required. However, South Korea's guidelines have comprehensive standards for the degree of MEP modeling details for each design phase, and the application of each design phase is ambiguous. Furthermore, in practice, detailed levels of each phase are input manually. Therefore, this paper summarized the detailed standards of MEP modeling for each design phase through interviews with MEP design companies and related literature research. In addition, items that enable auto-detailing with DYNAMO were selected using the checklist for each design phase, and the types of detailed methods were presented. Auto-detailing items considering the detailed level of each phase were classified by members. If a DYNAMO algorithm is produced that automates selected auto-detailing items in this paper, the time and costs required for modeling construction will be reduced, and the demand for MEP design will increase.
