  • Objective: Many factors are considered when a patient chooses the type of dental institution they wish to receive treatment from. Numerous studies have been conducted regarding this issue. However, more research is needed in analyzing the patient's psychological aspects when he/she decides to choose the dental institution they wish to receive treatment from. Methods: A locus of control test was utilized to analyze the psychological aspects in orthodontic patients of a university dental hospital and a private dental clinic. The locus of control test is known to be useful in predicting a human being's behavior. Both intrinsic and extrinsic locus of control tests were carried out in 934 orthodontic patients attending Seoul National University Dental Hospital and 1466 orthodontic patients from a private dental clinic. Results: The orthodontic patients at the university dental hospital showed a stronger extrinsic locus of control compared with those from the private dental clinic. Conclusion: The orthodontic patients at the university dental hospital value the doctor as the authority figure and the treatment quality more than those at the private dental clinic.

  • This study was performed to determine the relationships among self-esteem, state anxiety, interpersonal behavior trait and locus of control, and to reveal its related factors. The interviews were performed, during the period from April 1st, to June 30th, 2011, to 396 elderlies in Daejeon city. As a results, the self-esteem was negatively correlated with state anxiety and interpersonal behavior trait, while it was positively correlated with locus of control. While state anxiety was positively correlated with interpersonal behavior trait, it was negatively correlated with locus of control, and interpersonal behavior trait was positively correlated with locus of control. Multiple stepwise analysis revealed that the factors of influence on self-esteem included IADL, spouse, mastication of food and amnesia. The factors of influence on State anxiety included mastication of food, IADL, spouse, subjective health status, disability of body, subjective sleep evaluation and educational level. The factors of influence on Interpersonal dependent behavior trait included spouse, IADL, monthly income and subjective health status. The factors of influence on locus of control included spouse and visual acuity. Above results suggested that the self-esteem, state anxiety, interpersonal behavior trait and locus of control of subjects were significantly related with the sociodemographic characteristics, health related factors and health status.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between health locus of control (HLOC) and the eating behaviors in obese high school girls. The sample consisted of 262 obese high school girls in Seoul and Kangwon-Do. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The average scores of HLOC were HLOC- Internal; 4.06, HLOC-External; 2.47, and HLOC-Chance; 2.15. 2. The average scores of eating behavior factors were Disinhibition ; 2.91, Hunger ; 2.73, Dietary Restraint ; 2.55. 3. The HLOC-Internal and eating behavior (dietary restraint, disinhibition and hunger) were correlated positively. The HLOC- Chance and hunger was correlated positively. But HLOC-Chance and other eating behavior factors (dietary restraint & disinhibition) were not correlated in the level of statistical significances. The HLOC-External and eating behavior (dietary restraint, disinhibition and hunger) were correlated positively. 4. There was not a significant difference in HLOC depending on the existence of an obese sibling. There were significant differences in HLOC-Internal and HLOC- External depending on the evaluation of one's body figure. 5. There were significant differences in disinhibition and hunger depending on the existence of obese sibling. Also, there were significant difference in dietary restraint according to self perception of who is obese or not (t=3.342, p=.001). This study has shown a correlation between HLOC and eating behavior. As a result of these findings, clinical and school nurses should be involved in management and counselling obese girls concerning individual health locus of control and eating behavior.

  • Background: Mycobacterial Interspersed Repetitive Units (MIRUs) that are located mainly in intergenic regions dispersed throughout the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome. The selected MIRU loci, which were composed of a 12-locus set, demonstrated a high power for discrimination of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates collected from Kangwon province of Korea. To evaluate its ability to discriminate the M. tuberculosis strains, 45 clinical isolates were genotyped using the methods IS6110 RFLP and MIRU. Methods: All the samples were collected during the period from January 2007 to December 2007 from TB patients, who were residents and registered to a public health center of Kangwon Province in Korea. A total of 45 DNAs were extracted from clinical isolated mycobacterial strains and genotyped using IS6110 RFLP, the MIRU method. Results: We compared the 12-MIRU with IS6110 RFLP in the 45 samples, the 12-locus version offered less discriminatory power (Hunter-Gaston discriminatory index [HGDI]: 0.959 vs 0.998; 57.78% of clustered cases vs 8.89%). Conclusion: This 12-locus MIRU can be useful when additional combinations of other loci for genotyping M. tuberculosis in Korea where the Beijing family strains are dominant.

  • Objectives: The main purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with depression of middle school students in relation to self-esteem, type A behavior pattern, and locus of control. Methods: A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 309 middle school students. The data analysis procedure included frequency distribution, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression using depression as the dependent variable. Results: The prevalence of depression was 27.2%. Stepwise multiple regression revealed that the factors such as self-esteem(${\beta}$=0.422, p<0.001), type A behavior pattern(${\beta}$=0.166, p<0.001), and locus of control(${\beta}$=-0.165, p<0.001) turned out to be significant affecting factors. Forty nine percent of variance in depression was explained by these factors(40% of variance by self-esteem). Conclusions: The findings suggest that personal internalizing variables should be considered when developing mental health education program to prevent the occurrence of depression for middle school students.
