Experimental Study of Thermal Conductivity for Glass Wool by Inserted Dissimilar Materials based on Structural Composites (구조 복합재료 기반 이종재료 첨가시의 유리섬유의 열적 성능 평가에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • Glass wool is an eco-friendly materials that is manufactured through a continuous process by processing waste glass. This materials is low cost compared with another materials and has excellent thermal conductivity. For this reason, glass wool is installed as insulation system for LNG carriers and as insulation of building wall as well as various industries. The mechanism of insulation of glass wool is the conduction of the wool itself and convection by space between fibers. Therefore, in order to develop the enhanced thermal conductivity of glass wool is necessary to reduce its own conduction or to insert additional material after manufacturing as well as prevent convection. In this respect, many researchers have been actively studying to decrease thermal conductivity of polyurethane foam using by inserted glass wool or change the chemical component of glass wool. However, many research are aiming reduction of glass wool itself. This study focus on post-processing and inserted different materials; silica-aerogel, kevlar fiber 1mm, 6mm and glass bubble. Experimental results show that the thermal conductivity almost decreases with the addiction of glass bubble and silica aerogel.

Effect of Hydrogen(H2) Addition on Flame Shape and Combustion Products in Mixed Coflow Diffusion Flames of Methane(CH4), Ethane(C2H6) and Propane(C3H8) (동축류 메탄(CH4), 에탄(C2H6), 프로판(C3H8) 혼합 확산화염내의 수소(H2) 첨가가 화염 형상 및 연소 생성물에 미치는 영향)

  • As a carbon-free, green growth alternative, internal and external interest in hydrogen energy and technology is growing. Hydrogen was added to co-axial methane, methane-propane, and methane-propane-ethane diffusion flames, which are the main ingredients of LNG, to evaluate its effect on flame formation and combustion products. The variation in combustion products produced by adding hydrogen gradually to diffusion pyrolysis at room temperature and normal pressure conditions was observed experimentally by using a gas analyzer, and the shape of diffusion pyrolysis was observed step by step using a digital camera. The experimental results showed that the production volume of nitrogen oxides tended to increase and became close to linear as hydrogen was added to the diffusion pyrotechnic. This is because the relatively high temperature of heat insulation and fast combustion speed of hydrogen facilitated the production of thermal NOx. On the other hand, CO2 production tended to decrease as hydrogen was added to reduce the overall carbon ratio contained in the mixed diffusion flame of methane, methane-propane, and methane-ethane-propane. This means that the mixed fuel use of LNG-hydrogen in ships may potentially reduce emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas.

Evaluation of Thermal Performance and Mechanical Properties in the Cryogenic Environment of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polyurethane Foam (현무암 섬유 보강 폴리우레탄폼의 열적 성능 및 극저온 환경에서의 기계적 특성 평가)

  • LNG CCS which is a special type of cargo hold operated at -163℃ for transporting liquefied LNG is composed of a primary barrier, plywood, insulation panel, secondary barrier, and mastic. Currently, glass fiber is used to reinforce polyurethane foam. In this paper, we evaluated the possibility of replacing glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam with basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam. We conducted a thermal conductivity test to confirm thermal performance at room temperature. To evaluate the mechanical properties between basalt and glass-fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam which is fiber content of 5 wt% and 10 wt%, tensile and an impact test was performed repeatedly. All of the tests were performed at room temperature and cryogenic temperature(-163℃) in consideration of the temperature gradient in the LNG CCS. As a result of the thermal conductivity test, the insulating performance of glass fiber reinforced polyurethane foam and basalt fiber reinforced polyurethane foam presented similar results. The tensile test results represent that the strength of basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam is superior to glass fiber at room temperature, and there is a clear difference. However, the strength is similar to each other at cryogenic temperatures. In the impact test, the strength of PUR-B5 is the highest, but in common, the strength decreases as the weight ratio of the two fibers increases. In conclusion, basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam has sufficient potential to replace glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam.

The development of fuel processor for compact fuel cell cogeneration system (소형 열병합 연료전지 연계형 연료처리시스템 개발)

  • To extract hydrogen for stack, fuels such as LPG and LNG were reformed in the fuel processor, which is comprised of desulfurizer, reformer, shift converter, CO remover and steam generator. All elements of fuel processor are integrated in a single package. Highly active catalysts (desulfurizing adsorbent, reforming catalyst, CO shift catalyst, CO removal catalyst) and the various burners were developed and evaluated in this study. The performance of the developed catalysts and the commercial ones was similar. 1 kW, 5 kW class fuel processor systems using the developed catalyst and burner showed efficiency of 75 %(LHV, for LNG). The start-up time of the 1 kW class fuel processor was less than 50 minutes and its volume including insulation was about 30 l. The start-up time of 3 kW and 5 kW class fuel processors with the volume of 90 l and 150 l, respectively, was about 60 minutes. In the case of LPG fuel, efficiency, volume and start-up time of 1kW class fuel processor showed 73 %(LHV), < 60 l and < 60 min, respectively. Advanced fuel processor showed more highly efficiency and shorter start-up time due to the improvement of heat exchanger and operating method. 1 kW and 3 kW class fuel processors have been evaluated for reliability and durability including with on/off test of developed catalysts and burner.

A Study on the Visualization of Ice-formation Phenomena of Bath Water to Decide Maintenance Period of Gas Heater (가스히터 보수주기 결정을 위한 히터내부 열전달 매체액 결빙현상 가시화에 관한 연구)

  • This study was carried out for the purpose of determination of maintenance period and investigation of weak point due to freeze when the gas heater of KOGAS valve station Is not operated in winter season. 3-dimensional non-linear numerical simulation was conducted in order to predict the time and location which bath water in heater reaches to ice point. FLUENT V 5.0, commercial code, is used for thermal fluid flow analysis. We thought this was problem of heat conduction solving the energy equation and modeled gas heater by using the real geometry and scale for performing the 3-dimensional simulation. It was analyzed complex heat transfer phenomena considering convection due to air on surface, conduction in insulation material, natural convection of liquid in heater and heat loss through the pipe.
