Professional Inclination of Library and Information Science (LIS) Students of India: A Study of Socioeconomic Background and Career Choice Factors

  • The purpose of the study is to assess the professional inclination, academic and social background, family status and their occupation, gender distribution, choice of work, and their perceptions of aspirant LIS students. The study examined the various career choice factors and sources of motivation that influence the students of LIS profession. The data has been collected from the 251 LIS students' enrolled five prominent universities of North India. The results indicate that majority of female students join the LIS profession because of employment opportunities. Most of the respondents are from rural areas, hails to middle class families and their educational background in Arts/Humanities and Social Science subjects. Majority of the respondents choose the LIS profession as primary career because for the better employment possibilities. The study recommends the public awareness about the LIS profession in India.

Library and Information Science Education for Information Profession (정보전문직을 위한 도서관정보학 교육)

  • Needs of our society for information professional have been changed continuously. The purpose of this paper is to study a direction of Library and information Science(LIS) education which can response properly the change. For this purpose, 1) the characteristics of information socitey, the demand to information profession, and the qualification required by the emerging job market of information professionals are examined. 2) the identity of LIS and its educational achievement for information professionals are considered. 3) Information Resources Management (IRM) which in some sense shares the common goal of effective information transfer with LIS is also considered. 4) the similarities and the differences between the two are discussed to seek their interrelationship and cooperation possibiity. While there are differences in focus and practice between LIS and IRM, interdisciplinary partnership between these two can enhance theory and practice of each other's area. Particulary, LIS school can take advantage for their students to penetrate the emerging job market as well-rounded information professionals.

Job Satisfaction among Library and Information Science Professionals in India: A Case Study

  • Purpose: This study aims to assess the level of job satisfaction among the practicing Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals in India. Some of the key variables studied include salary, work environment, professional position, working hours, location, employee participation in administrative matters, recognition, and advancement. Scope: The study is limited to LIS professionals in India; however, the results of the study show some degree of commonality among LIS professionals across the world. Methodology/Approach: The study has been purely undertaken by analyzing the primary data collected from practicing library and information professionals across India by circulating an online questionnaire, using Google services and by posting the link on various social groups and other social networking sites such as Groups, Facebook, LinkedIn, discussion forums, and e-mails. Findings: Responses were generated across 20 states and union territories of the country, representing 88.15% territory of India. Of the total responses generated, 72.88% are males and 27.12% females. From the data analysis it emerged that every third library professional in India enters in to LIS profession by chance and not by choice, as 35.59% respondents expressed that they landed in the LIS profession by chance and 60.45% by choice. More than 77% respondents have expressed their willingness to change their present employer, if given better opportunity. More than 80% professionals either fully or partly agree that most of the LIS professionals across India are dissatisfied with their employers. All these and many more areas have been explored, which reflect the aspects of job satisfaction and dissatisfaction among LIS professionals in India.

Toward a new paradigm of the korea's library and information science (전환기 '한국'문헌정보학의 새로운 패러다임 모색)

  • This study attempts to show the reasons why the academic field, which has been called 'Library and Information Science', should change its paradigm for both research and practice. To this end, this study investigates the essence of the current academic crisis, which is seriously threatening the survival of the LIS as an independent academic field in South Korea. In details, this study discusses the identity problem of the LIS, the poverty in scholarship, the low self-esteem of the profession, etc. Also investigated are the reasons why the profession, which includes both scholars and practitioners, is facing with such a crisis. This study emphasizes that both researchers and practitioners in the LIS field should keep their eyes on the ongojng information revolution, and that in order to thrive as well as to survive from the midst of such an academic crisis they should notice and understand the essence of the revolution. The conclusion of this study includes the philosophies and strategies for survival, which the profession should keep in mind and follow in a hurry.

Skills Development Programmes and Activities for LIS Professionals in India: A Road Map For South Asian Countries (문헌정보학 전문가를 위한 인도의 기술개발 프로그램과 활동 분석)

  • The new millennium with mystifying convergence of IT has opened new challenges to LIS profession. This has resulted to continuous skill development and lifelong learning, for capacity building in consonant with contemporary changes. The LIS profession in India has created several mechanisms to organize and conduct several skills development programmes through which professionals are continuously enabled to update their professional knowledge and skills, in practice and teaching. There is a good organizational infrastructure and identified areas related to the recent developmental trends and as such LIS professionals and educators have facilities for updating their knowledge at veritable levels and intervals. The paper has surveyed programmes conducted by different organizations at different levels and highlights the aspects of the organizational infrastructure and the emergent areas of applications in LIS teaching, research and professional practices in India. The selection of areas and subjects for various skill development programmes suggest the competencies acquired by the LIS professionals from India, and the empowerment of their professional knowledge can be of immense value to its neighbouring countries. The paper highlights the knowledge and competencies of the LIS professionals in India and the broad-based facilities available here which can be a model for those countries which are seeking to utilize the LIS human resources from this part of the sub-continent. The paper in this circumstance surveyed on the institutional infrastructure for skill developmental opportunities available in India which would meet such requirements within and to the countries outside in the South Asian region seeking its collaboration in such manpower development work.

What is Wrong with Korean Library and Information Science? (한국 문헌정보학은 건강한가?)

  • The purpose of this article is to figure out the structural problems which have threaten both scholarship and profession of Library and Information Science in South Korea. In details, this study discusses such major weakness in Korean LIS as vague academic identity, poor research activities, and unreasonable educational systems. The emphasis for discussion is on identifying the unique and indigenous variables which have had deep influences on both development process and current crisis of Korean LIS. Finally suggested are the strategies and methods for promoting the good health of Korean Library and Information Science as an independent academic discipline as well as a prospective profession.

  • The Study focused on the four areas First, the Study examined the changing identity of the LIS Professionals, and change in LIS curricula. Second, the study addressed the transition from the traditional library to the virtual model. Third, the study asked how the traditional technical service of LIS professionals is changing to user-centered service. Finally, the study viewed the skills and the roles of the LIS professionals.

Worries and Solution to Japanese Librarians' Professionalism (일본의 도서관인의 전문성에 대한 고민과 그 해답)

  • In recent years, the worries of professionalism of the professions have been long lasting and the debate of securing the expertise by improving the curriculum and qualification system as well. In this study, we have focused on cases where Japanese' securing the expertise of profession through practicing specific and systematic movement by reorganizing the curriculum and implicating an expertise evaluation system. First, we analyzed the relevant qualifications for librarians and education system of Japan. Second, we organize the requirements of the Library and the studies of Library and Information Science (LIS) in Japan to secure expertise. Third, based on the requirements of the site and the results, we have discussed the advantages and disadvantages by focusing on recent changes in the curriculums and expertise evaluation system.

A Study on the Internet-Based Educational Contents Development and Evaluation for Teacher Librarian's Competency (사서교사의 교수역량 신장을 위한 인터넷 기반 교육용 컨텐츠 개발 및 평가 연구)

  • School library concentrates its focus on how information literacy is implemented through the collaborative efforts of classroom teachers and teacher librarian. The role of teacher librarian and the competencies they need in order to succeed have changed over many years. However, current LIS education for teacher librarian has limitations in terms of institution, curriculum. In this research, I designed and implemented an Internet-based educational contents development and evaluation for teacher librarian's competency. This system was development by lecture authoring tool(LectureMAKER v2.0). This study tested the effectiveness of the system was verified by survey by 51 college students. The test paper consisted of 20 items(5 scale) for measuring teaching competencies of college students. This study verified effectiveness of the Internet-Based Educational Contents by two dependent samples t-test, Levene test.
