  • Background Surgical correction of bilateral cleft lip deformities remains one of the most challenging areas in facial plastic surgery. Many surgical techniques and conservative devices have been offered for the early management of bilateral cleft lip in infants. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of lip adhesion on the lip and nose of patients with bilateral cleft lip. Methods A retrospective review of 13 patients with bilateral cleft lip was performed and compared with age-matched noncleft children. Patients underwent lip adhesion at a mean age of 2.8 months, and cheiloplasty at 6.6 months of age using a modification the Mulliken method. Secondary rhinoplasty was performed at the age of 6 in 13 patients. The surgical results were analyzed using photographic records obtained at the age of 1 and 7 years. Twelve length measurements and one angle measurement were obtained. Results All measurements were not statistically different from those of the noncleft age-matched control group at the age of 1. At 7 years of age, upper lip height and vermilion mucosal height were shorter (p < 0.05) than in the control group. Nasal tip protrusion and the nasolabial angle were greater (p < 0.05) than in the control group. Conclusion Lip adhesion followed by secondary rhinoplasty resulted in an acceptable lip and nasal appearance. Although nasoalveolar molding is now widely used, lip adhesion can be an appropriate alternative if an orthodontist is not available due to geographical or economic constraints.

  • We are designed to control the lipoid variation of the structure system with the stratum corneum on the skin. The skin structure is consisted of a morphology how to use the lipoid component, and the given skin structure is consisted of the mechanical shapes of the intercellular route and transcellular route, and is confirmed to control the variation state of the structure capacity. The skin impedance is appeared to result the value of measurement such as shapes of ${\lambda}-Lip-RSC$, ${\lambda}-Lip-RSL$, ${\lambda}-Lip-CSG$, ${\lambda}-Lip-CSS$ and ${\lambda}-Lip-RSB$. The condition is showed to the alteration difference value of the intercellular route and transcellular route. And, composition condition is established to separate the division parts for conversion system that is constructed with the alteration modeling. We will be possible to progress the improvement effectiveness of the continuous skin control system on the skin.

  • This paper presents a lip print recognition by the pattern kernels for a personal identification. A lip print recognition is developed less than the other physical attributes of a fingerprint, a voice pattern, a retinal blood/vessel pattern, or a facial recognition. A new method is proposed to recognize a lip print bi the pattern kernels. The pattern kernels are a function consisted of some local lip print pattern masks. This function converts the information on a lip print into the digital data. The recognition in the multi-resolution system is more reliable than recognition in the single-resolution system. The results show that the proposed algorithm by the multi-resolution architecture can be efficiently realized.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the strength of the tongue/lip strength and speech production for dysarthric adults with cerebral palsy. The maximal tongue and lip strengths of 22 normal adults, 27 dysarthric adults (10 adults with mild dysarthria, 10 adults with moderate dysarthria, and 7 adults with severe dysarthria) were measured with Iowa Oral Performance Instrument (IOPI). The percentage of correct consonants (PCC) and speech intelligibility were calculated from the words and sentences spoken by the subjects. The results of the study are as follows: First, both the maximal tongue and the maximal lip strength differed significantly between the control group and the group with dysarthria. While the group with mild dysarthria did not show meaningful difference in maximal tongue and lip strengths from the control group, the group with moderate and severe dysarthria showed significantly weaker tongue and lip strength than the control group and the group with mild dysarthria. Second, the current study suggests the existence of a significant correlation between the maximal tongue and lip strength and the PCC and speech intelligibility within all subjects with dysarthria. These findings can serve as an effective foundation to diagnose dysarthria quickly and accurately. The results of this study also indicate that in addition to the maximal tongue strength, the maximal lip strength can prove to be an important index in predicting the speech intelligibility of dysarthric adults with cerebral palsy.

  • Recent aerodynamic and acoustic studies of VPI(velopharyngeal insufficiency) are non-invasive and safety, therefore, many researchers have used it to diagnose the hyper/hyponasality and articulation disorders of cleft palate patients. The purpose of this study was to estimate mainly the oropharyngeal air pressure and over all air flow in cleft lip and palate patients. The pressure-collecting catheter was positioned in the oropharyngel cavity around tongue base. Twelve adult control group and three cleft lip & palate patients were participated to this experimentation. Aerophone II was used to measure peak air flow, mean air flow, phonatory airflow, phonatory efficiency and resistance. The results were as follows: 1) Airflow of cleft lip & palate patients group were higher than those of control group. Fricative sounds /s/ and /s'/ showed the statistic significance of mean airflow and volume data. 2) Intraoral air pressure of cleft lip & palate patients was lower than those of control group.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine whether any difference existed in craniofacial morphology between parents of children with cleft lip and/or palate and parents of children without cleft lip and/or palate as well as the characteristics of craniofacial morphology in parents of children with cleft lip and/or palate. Thirty three measurements of the various regions of cranium and face were obtained from lateral cephalometric radiograms in parents of 28 children with cleft lip and palate, 18 children with cleft lip, and 22 children with cleft palate. There were 28 couples and 40 single parents in this sample. There were 92 individuals including 41 males and 51 females. The measurements were compared with those in control subjects, including 40 adult males and 40 adult females, who had no history of craniofacial abnormalities. The total sample was compared for the sex independently. The obtained results were as follows. 1. In the cranium, both parents of cleft children had significantly shorter posterior cranial base length(S-Ba). 2. In the upper face, a significantly shorter anteroposterior length of maxilla(A'-Ptm'), particularly in the anterior region (A'-K), anterior facial depth(A-SBaL), posterior facia! height(Ptm'-SNL) and relation of subnasale to the cranial base (∠BaN'Sn) were noted in fathers of cleft children. But, all measurements were not found to be significantly different between experimental group and control group in all mothers. 3. In the lower face, both parents of cleft children showed a significantly greater Y axis angle(∠NSGn) and ramal plane angle(∠SNL-RP) in fathers of cleft children. Thus both patents showed a posteriorly rotation of mandible. The thickness of the lower lip(B-B') was significantly thicker in fathers of cleft children. 4. In the facial profile, a significantly shorter posterior facial height(S-Go) and greater angle of soft tissue facial convexity (∠BaN'Pog') were noted in the fathers of cleft children. But, all measurements were not found to be significantly different between experimental group and control group in all mothers.

  • In this paper, a new lip synchronization control method is proposed to achieve very low delay in the video communication. The lip control is so much vital in video communication as delay reduction. In a general way, to control the lip synchronization, both the playtime and capture time calculated from RTP time stamp are used. RTP timestamp is created by stream sender and sent to the receiver along the stream. It is extracted from the received packet by stream receiver to calculate playtime and capture time. In this paper, we propose the method of searching most adjacent corresponding frame of the audio signal, which is assumed to be played with uniform speed. Encoding buffer of stream sender is removed to reduce the buffering delay. Besides, decoder buffer of receiver, which is used to correct the cracked packet, is resulted to process only 3 frames. These mechanisms enable us to achieve ultra low delay less than 100 ms, which is essential to video communication. Through simulations, the proposed method shows below the 100 ms delay and controlled the lip synchronization between audio and video.
