The Alteration of Carbohydrate-Deficient Transferrin and Nerve Growth Factor in the Patients with Alcohol Dependence (알코올 의존 환자에서 탄수화물결핍 트랜스페린과 신경성장인자의 변화)

  • Objectives:Recent studies have raised the possibility that nerve growth factor(NGF) is abnormally regulated in the central nervous system(CNS) of animal models with alcohol dependence. The possible alteration of NGF by prolonged alcohol intake may play an important role in alcohol-induced neurotoxicity. Carbohydrate-deficient transferrin(CDT) is regarded as a reliable biological marker of alcohol dependence. The goal of this study was to estimate the changes of %CDT and serum NGF level according to the duration of alcohol abstinence, and to identify whether %CDT level is associated with the serum NGF level in the patients with alcohol dependence. Methods:The subjects were 24 patients with alcohol dependence. We used the Axis-Shield ASA to measure the %CDT level and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA) to measure the serum NGF level. %CDT and NGF levels were measured immediately after the admission and at 2 weeks after the admission. Results:Decreased %CDT were observed during the period of 2 weeks after the admission. NGF level was not significantly different after 2 weeks. The NGF levels were not correlated with %CDT. The possibility of %CDT as a predictor of alcohol-induced neurotoxicity was not confirmed. Conclusion:Serum NGF levels is not a reliable indicator of abstinence state in the patients with alcohol dependence. Further studies are needed to evaluate the relation between two indicators in regard to hematological and neurological changes in alcohol dependence.

Control of X Chromosome Reactivation and Determination of the Ratio of Sex Chromosome to Autosome in Embryonal Carcinoma Cell-Somatic Cell Hybrids (배종양 세포와 체세포 간의 융합 세포에서 X 염색체 재활성화의 조절과 성염색체에 대한 상염색체 비율의 결정)

  • OTF9-63 (OTF9) and P19S1O1A1 (P19) embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells were examined for their ability to produce the readivation of inactive X chromosomes from somatic cells. They were hybridized with various somatic cells and resulting HATr EC-somatic cell clones were analysed for their morphology, chromosomal replication pafterns and expression proffies of X-linked and distantiy located genes, Hprt and Pgk-1. The results demonstrated that 0RF9 cells could reactivate the inactive X chromosome whereas P19 cells could not. In adition, EC-somatic cell hybrids tended to reduce the number of sex chromosomes in long-term culture, resulting m 1:2 ratio of sex chromosomes to autosomes The use of EC cell hybrids provides an experimental system for studying the mechanism(s) of the X-reactivatio that is initiated and maintained from meiotic prophase of oogenesis to early embryogenesis.

  • Phenolic compounds such as isoflavones contribute to the antioxidant properties of soybean. This study investigated differences in the phenolic content and antioxidant activity of ten soybean cultivars grown in two different locations in Korea. We observed a wide range of variation in total isoflavone and phenolic content by location and cultivar. The total isoflavone content of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang (sub-highland) was significantly higher than that in cultivars grown at Gangneung (lowland). In contrast, the total phenolic content of cultivars grown at Gangneung was greater than that of cultivars grown at Pyeongchang. The radical scavenging activity of DPPH was similar to that of the total phenolic content rather than that of the total isoflavone content. These results suggest that antioxidant activity of soybean was associated with phenolic compounds rather than isoflavones. To identify the individual antioxidant components, we used an on-line HPLC-$ABTS^+$-based assay system, ESI/MS, and NMR. The results showed that the strongest antioxidant activity was linked to epicatechin.

Reduced Interleukin-17 and Transforming Growth Factor Beta Levels in Peripheral Blood as Indicators for Following the Course of Bladder Cancer

  • Interleukin (IL) 17 is produced by T-helper (Th) 17 with a vigorous effect on cells of the immune system playing important roles in pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases, including autoimmune disorders and cancers. Therefore, the aim of current study was to determine the serum levels of IL-6, IL-17, and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-${\beta}$) in Iranian bladder cancer patients, and to correlate them with disease status. Blood samples were collected from 40 bladder cancer patients and 38 healthy individuals with no history of malignancies or autoimmune disorders. The serum levels of IL-6, IL-17, and TGF-${\beta}$ were measured by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results showed that the levels of IL-17 (p<0.0001) and TGF-${\beta}$ (p<0.0001) were significantly lower in the patients compared to the controls. No significant differences in the level of serum IL-6 (p=0.16) was observed between the patients and controls. In addition, demographic characteristics between control and patients groups were not significantly different. As most of the cases studied in this investigation were in stage I and II, it is concluded that reduced Th17-related cytokines can be used as indicators for following the course and clinical stages of bladder carcinoma progress and immune response to cancer.

Design and Implementation of SNS-linked Location based Mobile AR Systems using OpenAPI on Android (안드로이드 기반 OpenAPI를 이용한 SNS 연동 지역정보 서비스를 위한 모바일 증강현실 시스템 설계 및 구현)

  • As the recent advances in network and wireless communications and semiconductor design and process technologies, our computing platform is rapidly shifting from desktop PCs to mobile devices such as UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC), Tablet PC, and Smartphone. Especially, wide-spreading Smartphones allow a new field of application based on location based services available with an user interface called augmented reality (AR). Therefore, this paper introduces an implementation of AR using various OpenAPls on Android Smartphones. In order to utilize enrich user data in real time, the system integrates with location based social network services also with OpenAPI. These APIs enable third-party developers to make use of rich contents of many portal web sites. The prototype was implemented on the real Android phone, Sky Sirius, and the result shows that it can provide an efficient location based service using AR technology without any constraints on mobile devices; in addition, it connects SNS to AR for sharing user data including photos, videos, and messages based on a specific location.

A Comparative Study on Successful Cases of Technology Commercialization of Domestic Companies : Focusing on External Fund Raising Strategy in the early stage of commercialization (국내기업 기술사업화 성공 사례 비교 연구 : 사업화 초기 외부자금 조달 방안을 중심으로)

  • Even after successful technology development, there are many cases where commercialization fails due to difficulties in financing in the early stages of commercialization. The purpose of this study is to give practical implications to technology-based founders. At the beginning of commercialization, 7 companies that succeeded in procuring different types of external funds were selected to conduct case analysis. The results are as follow. First, it was confirmed that the excellence of technology is the most important. Second, it was confirmed that they were majors in the relevant technology field or have worked in related fields, and concluded that greater synergy effect can be created by adding the founder's business will and active attitude. Third, even if the company's internal capabilities were insufficient, it was possible to succeed in financing by identifying and utilizing external financial information. Fourth, it is necessary to utilize a linked financial system that receives both loans and investments. Fifth, systematic IR (Investor Relation) should be continued.

P2P query processing method between ontologies in internet environment (인터넷상의 온톨로지간의 P2P 질의처리 방안)

  • In simple topology in network system, query should be delivered to all linked peers for query processing. This causes waste of transmission band width and throughput of each peer. To overcome this, as well as query processing strategy, efficient routing technique to deliver query to proper peer is needed. For efficient routing, clustering of peers in P2P networks is important. Clustering of P2P network bases on that combines peers that have similar characteristics in same cluster reduces quantity of message in network than assign peer for cluster randomly. In this paper, we propose clustering techniques for ontology based P2P query processing. Similarity measure point, cluster index structure, and query processing steps in ontology based P2P cluster environment are proposed.

  • The power-pack combustion test of technology demonstration model(TDM0) for 9 tonf-class staged combustion cycle engine development was conducted in the Upper-stage Engine Test Facility(UETF) of Naro Space Center. The power-pack model of TDM0 was composed of a pre-burner, a turbo-pump and propellant supply systems without a main combustor. In the power-pack combustion test, we confirmed the linked working condition and verified the main functional variation of the power-pack for the engine system test.

Controlled Release of Nerve Growth Factor from Sandwiched Poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) Films for the Application in Neural Tissue Engineering

  • In order to fabricate new sustained delivery device of nerve growth factor (NGF), we developed NGF-loaded biodegradable poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, the mole ratio of lactide to glycolide 75:25, molecular weight: 83,000 and 43,000 g/mole, respectively) film by novel and simple sandwich solvent casting method for the possibility of the application of neural tissue engineering. PLGA was copolymerized by direct condensation reaction and the molecular weight was controlled by reaction time. Released behavior of NGF from NGF-loaded films was characterized by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and degradation characteristics were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The bioactivity of released NGF was identified using a rat pheochromocytoma (PC-12) cell based bioassay. The release of NGF from the NGF-loaded PLGA films was prolonged over 35 days with zero-order rate of 0.5-0.8 ng NGF/day without initial burst and could be controlled by the variations of molecular weight and NGF loading amount. After 7 days NGF released in phosphate buffered saline and PC-12 cell cultured on the NGF-loaded PLGA film for 3 days. The released NGF stimulated neurite sprouting in cultured PC-12 cells, that is to say, the remained NGF in the NGF/PLGA film at 37 $^{\circ}C$ for 7 days was still bioactive. This study suggested that NGF-loaded PLGA sandwich film is released the desired period in delivery system and useful neuronal growth culture as nerve contact guidance tube for the application of neural tissue engineering.

Development and Verification of Inundation Modeling with Urban Flooding Caused by the Surcharge of Storm Sewers (도시배수체계와 연계한 내수침수모형의 개발 및 검증)

  • Urban flooding is usually caused by the surcharge of storm sewers. For this reason, previous studies on urban flooding are mainly concentrated on the simulation of urban drainage systems. However these approaches that find the pipes which have insufficient drainage capacity are very approximate and unreasonable ways in establishing both flood prevention and flood-loss reduction planning. In this study, a two-dimensional model linked the existing ILLUDAS model is developed to calculate the accurate and resonable solution about urban flood inundation and it is verified by using the simulation of July 2001 flood in Seoul. In the urban area with a small difference of ground elevations, the two-dimensional flood propagation phases must be considered to make a accurate analysis for inundated area and depth. The result of this study can be used to construct fundamental data for a flood control plan and establish a urban flood forecasting/warning system.
