Visualization Study of High-Incidence Vortical Flow over the LEX/Delta Wing Configuration with Sideslip (옆미끄럼을 갖는 LEX/삼각 날개 형상에 대한 높은 받음각 와유동의 가시화 연구)

  • An off-surface flow visualization experiments have been performed to investigate the flow field over a delta wing with the leading edge extension(LEX). The model is a flat wing with $65^{\circ}$ sweepback angle. The free stream velocity is 6.2 m/s, which corresponds to Reynolds number of $4.4\times10^5$ based on the wing root chord. The angle of attack and sideslip angle range from $16^{\circ}\sim28^{\circ}$ and $0^{\circ}\sim-15^{\circ}$, respectively. The visualization technique of using the micro water-droplet and the laser beam sheet enabled to observe the vortical flow structures, which can not be obtained by 5-hole probe measurements. With sideslip angle, the interaction and breakdown of the LEX and wing vortices was promoted in the windward side, whereas, it was suppressed in the leeward side.

  • The dominant effect of the interaction between vortices, generated by the addition of the Leading Edge Extension(LEX) in front of the wing, was well observed in this experiment. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vertex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vortices over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.

  • Highly swept leading edge extension(LEX) applied to delta wings has greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters.   • An experimental study of the vortex interaction characteristics of a delta wing/LEX configuration was conducted in a wind tunnel using the micro water droplet and laser beam sheet visualization technique. The main focus of this study was to analyze the effect of the angle of attack and sideslip angle on the vortex interaction and vortex breakdown. These tests were accomplished at angles of attack between $16^{\circ}$ and $28^{\circ}$ and sideslip angle between $0^{\circ}$ and $-15^{\circ}$ at free-stream velocity of 6.2 m/s. Flow visualization data provide a description of the vortex interaction between LEX and wing vortices, and of the vortex breakdown. The introduction of LEX vortex stabilized the vortical flow, and delayed the vortex breakdown up to higher angle of attack. The vortex interaction and breakdown was promoted on the windward side, whereas they are suppressed on the leeward side.

Three Dimensional Vortex Behavior of LEX Delta Wing by Dynamic Stereo PIV (Dynamic Stereo PIV에 의한 델타형 날개에서의 3차원 와류 유동에 관한 연구)

  • Leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing features the modern air-fighters. The LEX vortices generated upon the upper surface of the wing at high angle of attack enhance the lift force of the delta wing by way of increased negative suction pressure over the surfaces. The present 3-D stereo PIV includes the Identification of 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criterion and so on. A delta wing model with or without LEX was immersed in a circulating water channel. Two high-resolution, high-speed digital cameras$(1280pixel\times1024pixel)$ were used to allow the time-resolved animation work. The present dynamic stereo PIV represents the complicated vortex behavior, especially, in terms of time-dependent characteristics of the vortices at given measuring sections. Quantities such as three velocity vector components, vorticity and other flow information can be easily visualized via the 3D time-resolved post-processing to make the easy understanding of the LEX effect or vortex emerging and collapse which are important phenomena occurring in the field of delta wing aerodynamics.

  • An experimental study of the vortical flow characteristics around a yawed delta wing with the leading edge extension at high incidence angle is undertaken by upper surface pressure measurements. A special emphasis has been put on analyzing the basic physics of vortical flows, concerning the effects of incidence and sideslip angle on the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing, especially under high angle of attack. The experimental data has been dearly demonstrated the beneficial effect of the LEX vortex on the wing vortex. It leads to an essential stabilization of the wing vortex against its breakdown until at much higher incidence angle under small sideslip. An interesting flow feature is occurrence of the rolling moment reversal at a certain range of angle of attack and sideslip angle.

  • A process of 3-D stereo particle image velocimetry(PIV)was developed for the measurement of an illuminated sliced section field of 3-D complex flows. The present method includes modeling of camera by a calibrator based on the homogeneous coordinate system, transformation of the oblique-angled image to the right-angled image, identification of 2-D velocity vectors by 2-D cross-correlation equation, stereo matching of 2-D velocity vectors of two cameras, accurate calculation of 3-D velocity vectors by homogeneous coordinate system, removal of error vectors by a statistical method followed by a continuity equation criteria, and finally 3-D display as the post processing. An experimental system was also used for the application of the proposed method. Two high speed digital CCD cameras and an Argon-Ion Laser for the illumination were adopted to clarify the time-dependent characteristics of the leading edge extension(LEX) in a highly swept shape applied to a delta wing found in modern air-fighters.

  • The vortex flow characteristics of a yawed LEX-delta wing at a high-angle of attack are studied using a computational analysis. The objective of the present study is to investigate and visualize the effects of the yaw angle, the development and interaction of vortices, the relationship between the suction pressure distributions and the vortex flow characteristics. Computations are applied to the three dimensional, compressible, Navier-Stokes Equations. In computations, the yaw angle is varied between 0 and 20 degree at a high-angle of attack. Computational predictions are compared with the previous experimental results.

  • The development and interaction of vortices over a delta wing with leading edge extension (LEX) was investigated through off-surface flow visualization using micro water droplets and a laser beam sheet. Angles of attack of $20^{\circ}$ and 24$^{\circ}$ were tested at sideslip angles of $0^{\circ}$, $-5^{\circ}$, and $-10^{\circ}$ The flow Reynolds number based on the main-wing root chord was $1.82{\times}10^{5}$. The wing vortex and the LEX vortex coiled around each other while maintaining comparable strength and identity at a zero sideslip. The increase of angle of attack intensified the coiling and shifted the cores of the wing and LEX vortices inboard and upward. By sideslip, the coiling, the merging and the diffusion of the wing and LEX vortices were increased on the windward side, whereas they were delayed significantly on the leeward side. The present study confirmed that the sideslip angle had a profound effect on the vortex structure and interaction of a delta wing with LEX, which characterized the vortex-induced aerodynamic load.
