Unlike geostationary satellite communication systems, low-earth orbit(LEO) satellite communication systems move at relatively high speeds, and the angle with the ground device is not fixed and varies over a wide range. The propagation channel condition between satellites and ground nodes cannot be assumed line of sight(LOS) anymore. This paper analyzes the low-orbit multi-path fading satellite channel model that can occur in LEO satellite communication systems and Doppler frequency transition caused by high-speed maneuvering of LEO satellites and presents effective equalization techniques for OFDM and SC-FDE transmission methods suitable for multi-path frequency selective fading satellite channel models. In addition, this paper compares and analyzes the performance of OFDM and SC-FDE transmission methods in multipath fading LEO satellite channel environment using the proposed equalization techniques through simulations. Simulation results showed that SC-FDE outpeformed OFDM.
Low resolution spectroscopic observations of leo-stationary satellites over the Korean peninsula have been carried out at the KyungHee Optical Satellite Observing Facility (KOSOF) with a 40cm telescope. We have observed 9 telecommunication satellites and 1 weather satellite of 6 countries. The obtained spectral data showed that satellites could be classified and grouped with similar basic spectral feature. We divided the 10 satellites into 4 groups based on spectral slop and reflectance. It is suggested that the material types of the satellites can be determined through spectral comparisons with the ground laboratory data. We will continuously observe additional geo-stationary satellites for the accurate classification of spectral features.

Likewise all that of the propulsion system, development of Propulsion System for LEO Satellite is laborous tasks to surmount technical barriers of the advanced countries as well as to satisfy the requirements of evolving satellites and changes of functions, structures and etc. Those will be presented and discussed here that the process of technical approach to have developed the KOMPSAT propulsion system, and some challenging area to overcome to develop future LEO satellite propulsion system.
The performance analysis of the small satellites launch vehicle using the electric pump cycle as the upper stage engines was performed. The first stage is the launch vehicle that uses the test launch vehicle of the Korea Space Launch Vehicle II and the second stage employs elecpump cycle engine that uses liquid methane and kerosene (RP-1) as fuel. A model for the mass estimation was presented and the analysis was conducted for the range of thrust of 20 to 40 kN and combustion pressure of 3 to 6 MPa with a nozzle expansion ratio of 60 to 100. The mixture ratio with the maximum velocity increment was calculated and the performance of the LEO and SSO payload were calculated from the stage mass estimation. In both the cases, liquid methane, and RP-1 showed maximum payload for 20 kN thrust, 3 MPa combustion pressure, and the nozzle expansion ratio of 100, with a mixture ratio of 3.49 for liquid methane and 2.75 for RP-1. In addition, the ditching points of the first stage and the fairing in the LEO mission were analyzed using ASTOS.
LEO satellites have many heaters for thermal control, such as bus module heaters, payload heaters and battery internal heaters. Some of these heaters are controlled by thermisters, and others can be controlled by flight software. These heaters are divided into various types of group according to the location, telemetry variables, flight software logic, power distribution, etc. Thus, it is difficult to find out which heaters are included in a certain group and modify heater control logic for a new/other software developers. This document describes about the general/special control logic for satellite heaters and groups/arrays for heaters.

The goal of the paper is to discuss the recent trend of the configuration of high resolution LEO(Low Earth Orbit) EO(Earth Observation) satellites. The satellite configuration is decided by considering several factors such as mission, payloads, launch vehicle, propulsion and attitude control module. The advent of commercial companies selling satellite's images in 2000's requires additional changes of the satellite system to be capable of obtaining many high resolution images quickly. In order to meet customer's needs, the overall configuration of satellites is designed to be compact and stable without the loss of structural integrity and reliability. Among design changes, the configuration change of satellites is treated intensively in the paper.
This paper addressed a relative navigation method for autonomous rendezvous and docking of cube-satellites using single frequency Differential GPS (DGPS) under the intermittent communication between satellites. Since the ionospheric error of GPS measurement is variable depending on the visible satellites, a few meters error of relative navigation is occurred in the Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) environment. Therefore, it is essential to remove the ionospheric error to perform relative navigation. Besides, an intermittent communication period for receiving GPS measurements of the target satellite is limited for getting information every sampling time. To solve this problem, a method combining range domain DGPS and orbit propagation is proposed in this paper. The proposed method improves the performance of DGPS by using Hatch filter and solves an intermittent communication problem by estimating the relative position and velocity using Hill-Clohessy-Wiltshire Equation. Through the simulation, it is verified that the suggested algorithm provides the relative position error within RMS 0.5 m and the relative velocity error within RMS 3 cm/s. Furthermore, it has the advantage that it is suitable for real-time implementation using single-frequency GPS measurements and is computationally efficient.

In the operation of a low earth orbit satellite, a series of antenna commands are transmitted from a ground station to the satellite within a visibility window (i.e., the time period for which an antenna of the satellite is visible from the station) and executed to control the antenna. The window is a limited resource where all data transmission is carried out. Therefore, minimizing the transmission time for the antenna commands by reducing the data size is necessary in order to provide more time for the transmission of other data. In this paper, we propose a geometric compression method based on B-spline curve fitting using dominant points in order to compactly represent the antenna commands. We transform the problem of command size reduction into a geometric problem that is relatively easier to deal with. The command data are interpreted as points in a 2D space. The geometric properties of the data distribution are considered to determine the optimal parameters for a curve approximating the data with sufficient accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods currently used in practice.
The telemetry data received from satellite in real-time are used to monitor LEO satellite during the AIT (Assembly, Integration & Test) phase and the mission operation phase after launch. However, it is impossible to check all the incoming telemetry data from satellite in real time in order to detect abnormality of satellite quickly. Especially, the contact time of LEO satellite is limited because of its orbital characteristics. So the anomaly state of the LEO satellite should be detected and resolved during the contact time. Therefore, all incoming spacecraft telemetry data must be selected and manipulated in MIMIC. It is used in order to display summarized information about spacecraft in a visualized way that is quickly and easily understood. That is, it provides essential function to monitor a satellite both in orbit and during testing. In this paper, the design and development of MIMIC currently used in KOMPSAT, a LEO Earth observation satellite is described in detail. In future work, we plan to enhance MIMIC in order to improve user-friendliness and efficiency.

Generally, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are used to collect image or video from earth's surface. The collected data are stored on-board and/or transmitted to the main ground station directly or via polar ground station using terrestrial line. Today, an intersatellite link between a LEO and a GEO satellite allows transmission of the collected data to the main ground station through the GEO satellite. In this study, an approach for a continuous communication starting from LEO through GEO to ground station is proposed by determining the optimum ground station locations. In doing so, diverse ground stations help to determine the GEO orbit as well. Cross-correlation of the long term daily rainfall averages are multiplied with the logarithmic correlation of the sites to calculate the joint correlation of the diverse ground station locations. The minimum values of this joint correlation yield the optimum locations of the ground stations for Q/V-band communication and satellite control operations. Results for several case studies are listed.
