  • In this paper, we suggest a design method of a metamaterial-based low-profile antenna working at 425 MHz for LEO/Cube satellites. Satellites play an important role in linking th remote nodes in a wireless communication network and covering wide areas of the globe. Especially, an increasing number of universities or individuals aspire having their own satellites and build low-budget structures such as cube satellites in LEO and the ways to reduce the sizes of their satellites. Since the antenna occupies a major portion of the satellite surface, the antenna should be miniaturized for lighter weight. The proposed metamaterial low-profile antenna, unlike the conventional patch antenna, produces such a zeroth-order resonance to create an omnidirectional radiation pattern. Also, it is connected to a UHF waveguide bandpass filter as the feeding system to examine the possible change in the situation that the antenna is combined with the system. The performances of the monopole and proposed metamaterial antennas are compared to one another.

  • In this paper, design study of a small two-stage launch vehicle is undertaken for the dedicated launch of the Compact Advanced Satellite 500 (CAS500)-class satellite into the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) by modifying the second and third stages of the Korean Space Launch Vehicle II (KSLV-II). Since the KSLV-II has three stages, velocity increment is newly distributed for the two-stage small launch vehicle. For this end, the staging design is carried out for the design parameters such as stage mass ratios, structural coefficients and engine options for each stage followed by trajectory analysis. Investigation of the results provides the combination of design parameters for the small launch vehicle for the dedicated launch of 500 kg-class satellite into LEO.

  • Domestic satellite development programme is generally classified into two categories: COMS as GEO satellite and KOMPSAT as LEO one. Each satellite has the on-board propulsion system fulfilling its own mission requirements. The COMS propulsion system provides the thrust and torque required for the insertion into GEO, attitude and orbit control/adjustment of spacecraft. It is the well-known Chemical Propulsion System(CPS) using bipropellants. On the other hand, the monopropellant propulsion system is employed in KOMPSAT, and its main role is on-station attitude control excluding the orbit transfer function. In this study, these two representative propulsion systems are compared and analysed as well, in terms of essential differences and important characteristics.

  • A part of the big differences between LEO(Low Earth Orbit) and GEO(Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellite is that transfer orbit is used or not or what tolerance of the position on the mission orbit is permitted. That is to say, the transfer orbit is not used and the constraint of orbit position is not adapted on LEO satellite. Whereas for GEO satellite case, the transfer orbit shall be used due to the very high altitude and the satellite shall be stayed in the station keeping box which is permitted on the mission orbit. These phases are functions for AOCS mission. The aim of this paper is to introduce the AOCS hardware configuration for COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite). The AOCS hardware of COMS consist of 3 Linear Analogue Sun Sensors (LIASS), 3 Bi-Axis Sun Sensors (BASS), 2 Infra-Red Earth Sensors (IRES), 3 Fiber Optical Gyroscopes (FOG), 5 momentum wheels and 14 thrusters. In this paper, each component is explained how to be used, how to locate and what relation between the AOCS algorithm and these components.

  • The purpose of satellite thermal control design is to maintain all the elements of a spacecraft system within their temperature limits for all mission phases. The thermal analysis model for Low Earth Orbit satellite payload level simulation is established by considering thermal vacuum test environment condition, thermal vacuum chamber configuration, and satellite's payload inner thermal environment. The established thermal analysis model is used to determine thermal vacuum test conditions and test case requirements.

  • In this paper, we study a TT&C link to obtain a required specifications of TT&C(Telemetry Tracking and Command system) antenna for an LEO(Low Earth Orbit) satellite. The premised mission orbit is the sun-synchronized and circular orbit and it performs earth-space observations. We design minimum TT&C link-budget to obtain required antenna beamwidth and gain. The proposed turnstile antenna provides wide beamwidth and circular polarization. We suggested the attaching position that shows the most effective results by confirming the variation of antenna performance when the proposed antenna is adapted to satellite's various positions. Also we proved the proposed antenna's ability while it is performing the mission through the orbit simulation based on the electrical performance of the proposed turnstile antenna.

  • Currently developing the OBC of the next-generation LEO satellite by Korea Aerospace Research Institute adopts the LEON2-FT/AT697F processor to achieve high performance. And various communication devices such as SpaceWire, MIL-STD-1553B, DMAUART and CAN Master are integrated to the separated standard communication FPGAs within the OBC, where they can be controlled by the processor and flight software (FSW) through PCI interface. The Actel 1553BRM IP core is used for the 1553B in the next-generation LEO OBC and the B1553BRM wrapper from Aeroflex Gaisler is used for connecting it to the AMBA bus in FPGA. This paper presents the design and development of PCI-based 1553B communication software, and describes the handling mechanism of 1553B operation in FSW task level. Also it shows the test results on real-hardware and simulator.

  • Because the contact time between satellite and ground station is very limited in LEO (Low Earth Orbit) satellite, all telemetry data generated on spacecraft bus are stored in a mass memory and downlinked to the ground together with real time data during the contact time. The mass memory is initialized in the first system initialization phase and the page status of each memory block is generated step by step. After the completion of the system initialization, the telemetry data are continuously stored and the stored data are played back to the ground by command. And the memory scrubbing is periodically performed for correction of single bit error which can be generated on harsh space environment. This paper introduces the mass memory operation method for telemetry processing of LEO satellite. It includes a general mass memory data structure, the methods of mass memory initialization, scrubbing, data storage and downlink, and mass memory management of primary and redundant mass memory.

  • For low Earth orbit, the atmosphere causes orbit altitude to decrease, If this decrease is not corrected by the satellite propulsive unit, the orbit decoys continuously unit reaches the dense atmosphere and satellite life ends. If active orbit maintenance is mode by satellite propulsive unit then fuel consumption is necessary, which must be considered in the satellite design. Especially interesting is the method for evaluating the fuel consumption role for maintenance of elliptical orbit developed in this paper.(omitted)
