Design of LED TV Multi Test Unit (LED TV 통합검사유닛의 설계)

  • LED TV integration test unit are the equipment for testing LED BLU as LED BLU's operation, error check, AGING work. The previous test unit were inconvenient because it must change test unit in production line according to LCD's kind and size. This paper develops by integration style test unit that can accommodate various LED TV BLU model of 32 ~ 52 inch that is not one LED TV BLU model. We make that output current is various to dimension of 80 ~ 215 mA. We make functions that are LED BLU state check, Diming and heat occurrence mitigation. Also we develop firmware program and that the program can be upgraded and that can support new panel.

Smart Dimming Control Algorithm for Reducing Power Consumption of LED TV Backlight (LED TV 백라이트 소비전력 저감을 위한 스마트 디밍 알고리즘 개발)

  • In this paper, the new smart dimming algorithm which is mixed with PWM and PAM control method is proposed for reducing the power consumption of LED TV Backlight. The proposed technique is using the curve characteristics of LED forward voltage and current which is proportionally changing LED forward voltage as changing LED forward current. Therefore, each PWM and PAM control method has different LED forward voltage and current in the same brightness condition. The PWM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by only varying the duty ratio of PWM and constantly sustaining the amplitude of LED forward current and voltage. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PWM control method is relatively high and constant regardless of duty ratio of PWM. On the other hand, the PAM control method adjusts the brightness of LED TV Backlight by directly varying the level of LED forward current. So, the level of LED forward current and voltage in the PAM control method is lowered according to the brightness level. For the above-mentioned reason, the PAM control method has the advantage of reducing the total power consumption of LED TV Backlight at the brightness condition of below 100%, compared with PWM control method. By implementing this characteristic to LED driver circuit with control algorithm in MCU, the power consumption of LED TV Backlight can expect to be reduced. The effectiveness of the proposed method, new smart dimming algorithm, CPWAM(=Conditional Pulse Width Amplitude Modulation), has been verified by experimental results.

  • Recently several LCD TV makers including Samsung, LG and Sony actively have released LED LCD TV models on market. LED LCD TV is just which applied LED BLUs so that its color contrast ratio fairly enhance up to 1 million:1 and its thickness minimize to a few mm. Even this aspect seems somewhat to be each panel maker's strategies for prior market occupations on whole TV market. Without regard to the reasons, we do obviously meet a new era of technically advanced LCD TV. However we have still lots of problems or issues which we must overcome technically including LED chip/packaging process, secondary optics treatment, heat managements and cost reduction issues. Here I would like to forecast market volume and trend of LED LCD TV first and then discuss above almost of technical issues and suggest their possible solutions. Even these solutions looks better technologies and if they may increase production cost significantly, we will not prefer to choice that technology since lower cost policy can open the market. Finally I'm trying to suggest how well LED, as future light source, can apply to future LCD TV technologies.

  • The power supply devices for reducing the size of the LCD TV are increasingly required for high efficiency and highe power density. Recently, the LED backlight of the LCD TV comes into the spotlight for LCD TV, because the conventional CCFL backlight has difficult to use constantly according to the mercury restrictions. And In this paper, the LLC resonant converter using the planar transformer for slim-type LED backlight of LCD TV is presented and verified through an experimental prototype for 47 inch LCD TVs with LED backlight system.

Single Stage Current-Balancing Multi-Channel LED Driver for LED TV (LED TV를 위한 단일전력단 전류평형 다채널 LED 구동회로)

  • A single-stage current-balancing multi-channel light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed in this study. The conventional LED driver system consists of two cascaded power conversion stages, i.e., an isolation DC/DC converter and LED driver. LED driver is usually implemented with the same number of expensive boost converters as those of LED channels to tightly control the current through each LED channel. Therefore, its overall system size is not only bulky, but the cost is rather high. By contrast, the proposed LED driver system is composed of a single power stage with the DC/DC converter and LED driver merged. Although the current balancing circuit of the proposed LED driver requires only passive devices instead of expensive boost converters, all currents through multi-channel LEDs can be well balanced. Therefore, the proposed LED driver features a small system size, improved efficiency, and low cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed driver, its operation and performance are verified on a prototype for a 46" LED TV.

Initial Photometric and Spectroscopic Characteristics of 55-inch CCFL and LED Backlights for LCD-TV Applications

  • For better picture quality in LCD TVs, it is important to reach a steady emitting state within as short a time as possible in the initial stage after the TV is turned on. The initial characteristics of LCD TVs are mainly determined by the properties of the backlight. In the present study, the photometric and spectroscopic properties of a 55-inch Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp (CCFL) and Light Emitting Diode (LED) backlights were investigated. The measured properties include time dependence of the spectrum, luminance, and color coordinates. The results show that the change in the spectroscopic properties of the LED backlight is smaller than that of the CCFL backlight. This indicates that the initial picture quality of the LCD TV with the LED backlight is superior to that with the CCFL backlight. The origins of this difference were discussed in relation to the inherent characteristics of the two light sources.

  • 본 논문에서는 3D TV를 위한 다채널 전류평형 단일스위치 LED 구동회로를 제안한다. 제안된 구동회로는 각각의 LED 채널의 정전류 제어를 위해 별도의 전력단을 사용하는 대신에 2차 측에 단 1개의 switch를 추가하여 하나의 채널 전류를 정전류 제어하고 나머지 다른 채널의 전류를 캐패시터의 성질을 이용한 회로를 사용함으로써 모든 채널 전류의 정전류 제어 및 전류평형이 가능한 회로이다. 추가된 switch는 ZCS(Zero Current Switching) 동작하므로 스위칭 손실을 최소화하여 고효율화 시킬 수 있다. 또한, 여러 LED 채널의 정전류 제어를 별도의 LED Driver단을 사용하지 않고 캐패시터의 성질을 이용하여 구현하기 때문에 소형화 및 저가격화가 가능하다. 최종적으로 제안된 회로의 우수성과 이론적 분석의 타당성 검증을 위해 46" LED 3D-TV 구동회로를 위한 시작품을 제작하여 고찰된 실험 결과를 제시한다.

A Study on Efficient Control of Backlight LED for Reduction of Power Consumption of LCD TV (LCD TV의 소비 전력 절감을 위한 백라이트 LED의 효율적인 제어에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we present an algorithm for efficient control of backlight LED in order to reduce the power consumption of LCD TV. In addition, a pragmatic implementation method is presented. In conventional local dimming control, backlight LEDs of LCD TV are divided into $M{\times}N$ blocks. And, the proper luminance for each block is computed according to input image and used for dimming control. But, LED light of each block is diffused and affects the neighboring blocks, so that luminance of each block becomes larger than that of intent. In the proposed algorithm, dimming control values are reduced by the amount of quantity affected by the neighboring blocks using light spread function, resulting in additional reduction of power consumption.

  • LED backlight for LCD TV is a great alternative to CCFL backlight due to its low power consumption and flexible arrangement. Various LED backlight configurations are being used to control the backlight locally in order to achieve both power efficiency and high contrast. However, the relatively small spatial resolution of the backlight system results in showing artifacts of backlight control that is acknowledgeable to human vision. Moreover, such artifacts get worse between temporal frames. In this paper we present a method of decreasing such temporal artifacts with a Human Visual System(HVS) approach to minimize distortion caused by local backlight dimming.
