  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a measurement system for determining photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) distribution and illumination efficiency of LED lamps. Methods: The system was composed of a linear moving sensor part (LMSP), a rotating part to turn the LMSP, a body assembly to support the rotating part, and a motor controller. The average PPF of the LED lamp with natural cooling and water cooling was evaluated using the measurement system. Results: The PPF of LED lamp with water cooling was 3.1-31.7% greater than that with natural cooling. Based on the measured value, PPF on the horizontal surface was predicted. Illumination efficiency of the LED lamp was slightly increased with water cooling by 3.4%, compared with natural cooling. A simulation program using MATLAB was developed to analyze the effects of the vertical distance from lighting sources to growing bed, lamp spacing, and number of LED lamps, on the PPF distribution on the horizontal surface. The uniformity of the PPF distribution of the LED lamps was fairly improved with 15 cm spacing, as compared to the 5 cm spacing. By simulation, PPF of $217.0{\pm}27.9{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was obtained at the vertical distance of 40 cm from six LED lamps with 12 cm spacing. This simulated PPF was compared to the measured one of $225.9{\pm}25.6{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. After continuous lighting of 346 days, the relative PPF of LED lamps with water cooling and natural cooling was decreased by 6.6% and 22.8%, respectively. Conclusions: From these results, it was concluded that the measurement system developed in this study was useful for determining PPF and illumination efficiency of artificial lighting sources including LED lamp.

  • This paper designs and implements a smart garden system using probabilistic filter algorithm using SLAM that can be used in apartment or veranda. To do this, we used Arduino and environtal sensors, which are open hardware controllers, and designed to control and observe automatic water supply, lighting, and growth monitoring with three wireless systems (Bluetooth, Ethernet, WiFi). This system has been developed to make it possible to use it in an indoor space such as an apartment, rather than a large-scale cultivation system such as a conventional plant factory which has already been widely used. The developed system collects environmental data by using soil sensor, illuminance sensor, humidity sensor and temperature sensor as well as control through smartphone app, analyzes the collected data, and controls water pump, LED lamp, air ventilation fan and so on. As a wireless remote control method, we implemented Bluetooth, Ethernet and WiFi. Finally, it is designed for users to enable remote control and monitoring when the user is not in the house.

  • In addition to yellow dust occurring in China, fine dust has become a hot topic in Korea through news and media. Although there is fine dust generated from the outside, the purchase rate of air purifier products is increasing as external fine dust flows into the inside. The air purifier uses a filter internally, and the sensor notifies the user through the LED alarm whether the filter is replaced. However, there is currently no product measuring how much the filter rate is reduced and determining the pressure of the blower to operate. Therefore, in this paper, data are generated directly using Arduino, fine dust sensor, and differential pressure sensor. In addition, a program was developed using Python programming to calculate how old the filter is and to analyze the wind power of the blower according to the filter rate by calculating the measured dust and pressure values.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a wearable systems that protect users, based on sensors that are easy to use, from accidents caused by harmful gases in the operator's poor working environment or the risk of ultraviolet rays during outdoor activities. By developing smart wappen with Light Emitting Diode (LED) light alarm function including UV sensor and gas sensor and central processing unit, systems that are applied to daily wear and work clothes to explore the possibility of user-centered, harmful environment monitoring products in real time were proposed. Each sensor was applied to sportswear and work clothes and the wappen system consisted of lightweight and thin form as a whole. Wappen to cover the device had one sheet cover on the front and another cover from the inside to form a sandwich like formation. Wappen was made in the same form as regular clothes that doesn't damage the exterior then a removable wappen system was developed using Velcro and snap methods to enable the separation of device or the exchange of batteries. De-adhesion method can occur in two ways, from the outside and from the inside, so the design is selected depending on the application. This study shows the significance of the development of sensor-based smart clothing, in that it presented a universal model for users.

  • In this paper, we demonstrated a polarimetric fiber pressure sensor using a polarization-diversity-loop-based Sagnac interferometer(PDLSI) composed of polarization-maintaining fiber(PMF) and a fiber Bragg grating(FBG). In order to compare the pressure sensitivity for various kinds of PMF, three kinds of bow-tie PMF were employed as sensor heads. The maximum pressure sensitivity was measured as approximately -15.07nm/MPa, and an R2 value to represent sensor linearity was measured as ~0.992 at the sensor system using corresponding PMF over a pressure range of 0-0.3MPa. An FBG was utilized and located adjacent to the PMF segment for compensating temperature-induced errors in the measurement of pressure. The pressure sensitivity of the proposed sensor was improved by approximately four times compared with the previously reported pressure sensor based on polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are generally comprised of densely deployed sensor nodes, which results in highly redundant sensor data transmissions and energy waste. Since the sensor nodes depend on batteries for energy, previous studies have focused on designing energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocols to extend the network lifetime. However, the energy-efficient protocols induce an extra end-to-end delay, and therefore recent increase in focus on WSNs has led to timely and reliable communication protocols for mission-critical applications. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient and delay guaranteeing node scheduling scheme inspired by biological systems, which have gained considerable attention as a computing and problem solving technique. With the identification of analogies between cellular signaling systems and WSN systems, we formulate a new mathematical model that considers the networking challenges of WSNs. The proposed bio-inspired algorithm determines the state of the sensor node, as required by each application and as determined by the local environmental conditions and the states of the adjacent nodes. A control analysis shows that the proposed bio-inspired scheme guarantees the system stability by controlling the parameters of each node. Simulation results also indicate that the proposed scheme provides significant energy savings, as well as reliable delay guarantees by controlling the states of the sensor nodes.

  • In the worldwide, The issue comes up which is the danger of car accidents from climate-change effects. We are considering about various types of speed limit signs for setting restricts to high-speed vehicles. South Korea has 4 seasons in the land. At Summer or Winter seasons have heavy rains and fogs or snow, In these seasons need to enforce speed limit laws or methods to prevent car collision. But South korea is using stationary speed limiters that is not enough to proof against rear-end car accidents in these climates. In this paper shows the necessity of independent LED speed limits display to reduce car accidents. And explaining the prototype model which is a combination of rain sensor and wiper systems. This model is independently changed the speed limits to 50%, 80%, 100% of standards by raindrops and snowflake. Also it is freely setting speed limits on each places anywhere it settled in. Visual effects of the model as being speed-down of vehicles helps to prevent rear-ending car accidents and traffic beforehand.

  • The number of cyclists is on the steady growing for leisure and transportation with the increasing interest in health and environment. However, the number of cycling accidents is also increasing steadily due to the lack of safety awareness and regulations. Focusing on this issue, we propose and develop a smart LED bicycle helmet in order to reduce a risk of cycling accident. The main idea is to change status of the LED on the helmet based on the bicycle's movement and provide motion information of the bicycle for others. To control the LED lights on the helmet, we use the Arduino board which communicates with the LED module through serial connection. We decide motion information by using the values from acceleration and GPS sensors of the smartphone. To receive this information from the smartphone, the control board and the smartphone are connected by Bluetooth.

  • In this paper, we propose the design of LED Streetlight Platform with capabilities of weather monitoring and color temperature control. Several previous works are focused on the energy efficiency or data management of streetlight system, but no work has been done on the lighting performance, especially when natural phenomenon such as fog or haze appears on the street and obstructs the visibility of drivers and pedestrians. To solve such issue, we propose the use of two LED lamps with different correlated color temperature, which will be activated interchangeably according to the condition on the street. We also present the design of communication scheme between each devices in the system. Moreover, our experimental results show the LED Streetlight Platform can perform well and the data can be displayed properly at the website.
