  • In the past, display devices have undergone many changes, such as plasma TVs and LCDs, and have continued to develop. Recently, new display technologies, such as Organic Light Emitting Diode displays and Inorganic Light Emitting Diode displays, have been developed. Among them, Micro LED displays have the potential to improve performance more than LCDs and OLEDs, but a lot of effort and time are needed until the mass production technology (transfer and bonding) of Micro LED displays is developed. We have developed a new Micro LED display light source that can be produced using existing transfer and bonding process technologies to enable faster commercialization of Micro LED in the industry. This light source is TFT deposition on LED. TFT deposition on LED has the advantage of being able to produce displays using existing process technology, making early commercialization of display application products possible. In this study, we applied the Active Driving method to verify the performance of TFT deposition on LED as a display to determine its commercialization potential. Additionally, to facilitate faster application of Micro LED in the industry, we applied TFT deposition on LED to Optical Wireless Communication systems, which are widely used in application service areas such as safety/security and sensors, to verify its communication performance. The experimental results confirmed that TFT deposition on LED is not only capable of AM driving but can also be applied to OWC systems.

  • Wearable device, next generation smart device, is consistently growing. The flexible display will be a kind of display in the wearable device. The flexible display technology is now evolving with end-user requirement such as portability and easy installation. Previous wearable display products still have some difficulties in manufacturing and in flexibility whole device. But it can be a flexible display with LED device and utilized in commercial area. In this paper, we propose a driver to control the LED display and implement a flexible LED display system.

  • Transparent LED display is providing city residents with different attractions via information services and landscape and increasing demand is detected in various areas. It is true that majority of the current demand in transparent electrode material was found and used in ITO but limitations in capacity and economic efficiency led to the need for continuous research and technology development via new materials. As a new material, metal mesh has 85% of the materials to substitute ITO and is widely used due to low-cost and high-conductive rate. Maintenance of transparent LED display utilizing metal mesh compared to existing ITO transparent display is much easier as it not only saves resources but is also economical. Thus the objective of this paper lies in proposing the utilization of metal mesh in transparent LED display prototype to enable economical use of transparent LED display technology and to expand the market and to also propose transparent LED display development method via metal mesh and manufacture a prototype based on the method. And a characteristic comparison test between ITO and metal mesh provides the possibility of using metal mesh as a transparent electrode material in transparent LED display development.

  • Micro LED, which is emerging as a next generation display, is difficult to commercialize due to various technical problems to date. In particular, transfer technology that transfers small LED to a display substrate in micro units is a key technology that can bring commercialization and is an important variable. The core of transfer technology is to move the LED quickly and accurately to the desired location. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention on the transfer technology which is the most important task of Micro LED, and we analyzed and summarized the transfer technology using Elastomer Stamp which is one of the advanced transfer technologies.

  • Wearable display market is a consistently growing field to handle a smart device with ease. Wearable display is an efficient device that can show the information to the user. In this paper, propose the scheme of a wearable display using LED and implement it including controlling remotely with BLE. Traditional outdoor LED display requires the dedicated controller and its software. Therefore, to control those LED display, it should implement a driver and its own way of communication. The proposed method is to ensure the independence and extensibility by separating driver module and communication module for controlling LED display. In addition, by adopting a short-range communication with Bluetooth 4.0 and a LED driver with low-power technology, it can be showed to control system configuration and display with a smart device.

  • A direct-lit liquid crystal display that does not use color filters is proposed. A backlight unit that employs compartmentalized RGB LED and lenticular-lens arrays is used instead of color filters to direct the RGB LED lights into the RGB subpixels. The color-filterless LED backlight design, simulation, and experiment results are presented.

  • In this paper, we developed an optimal flicker-free control algorithm operating within 16 luminance implementation bits and 512 brightness implementation pulses irrespective of LPM(LED Pixel Matrix) module configuration on dynamic driving method of LED display system. As an implementation method, we turned the refresh rate up by increasing the number of scans through multiple shift-latches which were devised from conventional shift-latch scheme for full color representation. As a result, the LED display system of this method has no flicker phenomenon because of the novel refresh rate higher than 2,040[Hz] incomparable to 240~480[Hz] of conventional system.
