  • Saussurea chabyoungsanica was recorded in new species by Lim hyoung tak in 1997. In order to understand the entity of new species, we investigated the new distribution sites, general morphological characters, the width of variation among regional groups. S. chabyoungsanica were located Manduckbong, Mt. Sukbyoung, Mt. Duckhang, and Sukgaejae in ridgeline of the Taebaek mountains. These sites are typical limestone zones of Korea. As a result of PCA analysis for external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica and S. neoserrata, S. neoserrata group was distinctly discriminated from S. chabyoungsanica group. And it was considered that the characters of leaf, corolla and involucral bract were major factors of cumulative rate. And also, through the analysis of external morphology of S. chabyoungsanica by region, Mt. Sukbyoung group was discriminated from other groups.

  • A basic experiment was performed to control tile plant growth using acoustic emission technique considering the environmental conditions for plant. At a dry soil condition, the signals due to the cavitation from xylem of angiosperm and gymnosperm were mainly detected. The strong signal from xylem and the weak signal from plasmodesmata and casparian strip were detected at the same time after distilled water was provided. Two signals after providing tile acid and distilled water were contrary to each other. The wind, number of leaf, music, temperature and humidity affected the acoustic emission count from plants but the frequency ranges of the detected signals were the same.

  • This study was conducted to compare the methods of slide dip and leaf dip techniques in the resistant level determination of spider mites to acaricides used; .and to investigate resistant levels of two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae Koch to benzomate, dicofol and cyhexatin in Honam region of Korea. Comparisons of the resistant strains and susceptible strain based on $LC_{50}$ values were summarized. Using the slide dip and leaf dip techniques with benzomate acaricide, the Keumchun strain of T. urticae showed 75-and 69-fold resistant levels, respectively, as compared with the Kwangju susceptible strain, but the Hackyo strain was 38-and 35-fold resistant levels, respectively. There was no significant difference (P>0.05) between the slide dip and leaf dip methods. With dicofol acaricide, resistant levels of the Keumchun strain of T. urticae were 71 times by using the slide dip and 74 times by using the leaf dip as resistant as the Kwangju susceptible strain while the Hackyo strain was 24 times by the former method and 23 times by the later method. There was also no significant difference (P>0.05) between both the methods. The slide dip technique is more recommendable than the leaf dip technique for determination of degree of chemical resistance to the spider mites with accuracy and less variation of the results. Using the slide dip method with cyhexatin, the Bia, Keumchun and Hackyo strains of T. urticae were 19-, 18- and 9-fold resistant levels, respectively, over the Kwangju susceptible strain.

  • In a forest ecosystem, the major source of soil carbon input is from litterfall and its decomposition. To understand the effect of litterfall and litter decomposition on seasonal variation of soil respiration and litter decomposition rates were measured in temperate deciduous forest in Korea. Annual litterfall collected from litter trap (1m x 1m) were 147.5 ± 8.2g Cm/sup -2/ yr/sup -1/ in 2003. About 47% of litterfall were Quercus serrata leaf followed by Carpinus laxiflora leaf (27 %), Carpinus cordata leaf (7 %), and others, such as other leaf, bark, branch, and acorn, were 20%. The decomposition rate was the highest in C. cordata (33.03%, k = 0.46), followed by C. laxiflora (25.73%, k = 0.30), and Q. serrata (24.17%, k = 0.28). The continuous measurement of soil respiration from January 2004 to December 2004 was carried out using AOCC (Automatic Open-Closed multi-Chamber system). The annual soil respiration rate was 629.6g Cm/sup -2/ yr/sup -1/ and the litter decomposition was 30.0g Cm/sup -2/ yr/sup -1/. The portion of litter decomposition rate on soil respiration rate was about 5%. From January to February, when the soil respiration rate was the lowest, about 11 % of soil respiration (7.4 ± l.4g Cm/sup -2/ month/sup -1/) were effected by litter decomposition rate (0.8g Cm/sup -2/ month/sup -1/). The highest soil respiration rate (111.5 ± 16.2g Cm/sup -2/ month/sup -1/) and litter decomposition rate (11.4g Cm/sup -2/ month/sup -1/) were showed in July to August. According to the regression analysis between soil respiration rate and litter decomposition, the soil respiration rate were related to litter decomposition with the correlations (r = 0.63).

  • The seventeen barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) Beauv.] accessions, which were collected national-widely in 1986 and selected two times through 1987, were experimented at 1988. To study the degree of ecological variations of the collected accessions of native barngardgrass species as a weed, the experiment was conducted with Wagner pots in size of 1/5000a and under P.E. film house. Among 57 characters, 100 grains weight, rate of tiller increase from transplanting to 30 days, the number of the maximum tillers and rate of dry weight increase from 15 DAS to 22 DAS were become intra-specific variarions as higher coefficient of varation than 30%, the size of the first leaf, fresh weight and dry 22 seedlings, rate of productive tiller, panicle number and tillering divergence made intra-specific variations as more and less C. V. than 25%, while the required days upto heading since seeding at June 6. rate of fresh/dry weight and plant height of 22 days old seedling made intra-specific variations as the coefficient of variation of about 50%. Among the attributes the color in leaf, leaf sheath, mid-ribs, node, spike, grain, and plant type, length of leaf marginal tooth, grain shape, purple bend on leaf were seemed useful to indentify the accessible specific.

  • Radiation use efficiency (RUE), the amount of biomass produced per unit intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), constitutes a main part of crop growth simulation models. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the variation of RUE of rice plants under various nitrogen nutritive conditions. from 1998 to 2000, shoot dry weight (DW), intercepted PAR of rice canopies, and nitrogen nutritive status were measured in various nitrogen fertilization regimes using japonica and Tongil-type varieties. These data were used for estimating the average RUEs before heading and the relationship between RUE and the nitrogen nutritive status. The canopy extinction coefficient (K) increased with the growth of rice until maximum tillering stage and maintained constant at about 0.4 from maximum tillering to heading stage, rapidly increasing again after heading stage. The DW growth revealed significant linear correlation with the cumulative PAR interception of the canopy, enabling the estimation of the average RUE before heading with the slopes of the regression lines. Average RUE tended to increase with the increased level of nitrogen fertilization. RUE increased approaching maximum as the nitrogen nutrition index (NNI) calculated by the ratio of actual shoot N concentration to the critical N concentration for the maximum growth at any growth stage and the specific leaf nitrogen $(SLN;\;g/m^2\;leaf\;area)$ increased. This relationship between RUE (g/MJ of PAR) and N nutritive status was expressed well by the following exponential functions: $$RUE=3.13\{1-exp(-4.33NNNI+1.26)\}$$ $$RUE=3.17\{1-exp(-1.33SLN+0.04)\}$$ The above equations explained, respectively, about 80% and 75% of the average RUE variation due to varying nitrogen nutritive status of rice plants. However, these equations would have some limitations if incorporated as a component model to simulate the rice growth as they are based on relationships averaged over the entire growth period before heading.

  • Huber value and leaf specific conductivity were investigated for determining the hydraulic conductance of six deciduous hardwood species subjected to five levels of artificial shade treatments. Huber values measured in full sun were in the ranges of $1.5{\sim}9.1mm^2/dm^2$, $1.3{\sim}2.6mm^2/dm^2$, $1.5{\sim}5.3mm^2/dm^2$ in June, July, and September, respectively in the first year. The values generally decreased with increasing the shading in most of the species studied. Because of early defoliation in September, most of the values measured were also higher in September than in July. Huber values were quite different between those of the first year and those of the second year in most of the species studied, but the seasonal variation of Huber values and shading effects to the values seemed to be similar between the first and the second years. The values of leaf specific conductivity(LSC) measured in Betula platyphylla var. japonica. B. schmidtii, Zelkova serrata, Acer mono for 2 years were in the range of $4.0{\sim}80.0{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$ by season and by shading treatment. But in Ligustrum obtusifolium and Prunus sargentii, the values were in the ranges of $4.0{\sim}280.0{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$ and $8.0{\sim}120{\mu}{\ell}/dm^2$, respectively with having quite different values compared with those of the above species. Seasonal variation of LSC values was more or less irregular by species and by treatment year, but the LSC values of B. platyphylla vac. japonica, B. schmidtii, and P. sargentii in the first year and also those of Z. serrata and P. sargentii in the second year were mostly higher in September than in July. The LSC values seemed to be generally decreased with increasing the artificial shading in all of the species studied.

  • This experiment was conducted to select genotypes that were high-yielding and adapted to the soil and weather conditions in Korea, from 13 Fawn deri ved progenies which represented in the previous study. Comparisons were made in various leaf and plant characteristics, and forage productivities, between the 13 polycross progenies of high-yielding Fawn and control varieties including Fawn, Alta, and Kentucky 31. The results obtained were summarized as follow; Genetic differences between the polycross progeny group and the control group were recognized in leaf fresh weight but those between two groups in leaf dry weight were not observed. Leaf area of all derived progenies and control varieties were appeared to have individual genetic differences and, moreover, the leaf area of the polycross progeny group was larger than that of the control. Differences between polycross progeny group and control group in leaf width were not significant. However, leaf length exhibited significant differences among all polycross progenies, and control varieties between two groups, and among polycross progenies but no differences were observed among control varieties. Tiller number, plant height, and plant width of the polycross progeny group were larger than those of the control varieties when measured before and after harvest. Panicle length among all polycross progenies and control varieties showed minor differences. However, significant differences were found between the polycross progeny group and control group, as well as among the polycross progenies and control varieties within each group in culm length. Above characteritics in the leaf fresh and dry weight, area and length, plant width and height, and tiller number showed positive correlations with the forage yields, respectively. Forage yields of the polycross progenies were higher than those of the control varieties and the variation of the yields among the genotypes were great.

  • As one way of evaluating polymorphism in maize, variation of peroxidase 8 (Px.8) in maize plants was investigated by means of horizontal acrylomide electrophoresis. The specific part of maize plants was stele and other parts of plants were also studied for 34 different maize lines and hybrids. The results obtained indicate that Px.8 has three distinct migrating patterns on gel such as fast, slow and fast-slow. The band pattern varied with materials used. Most hybrids were showing fast-slow band, indicating that those hybrids are heterozygous at least for Px.8 allele. Variation of band pattern was obseerved within a single inbred line. The Px.8 in stele tissue and in young leaf and nodal tissue was found to be identical, indicating the possible use of those tissues as an alternative tissue for Px.8 study. It was also found that there might be some definite relationship between Px.8 and Px.3 activities in the same tissue.

  • In vitro propagation of Neoregeria carorinae 'Tricolor' was achieved by using immature flowers and lateral buds, and the plantlets from tissue culture were transplanted and cultivated in greenhouse. The picking times of explants to decrease disappearance of stripes, and in vivo the growth and flowering of regenerated plantlets as influenced by in vivo healed nun were investigated. The normal plantlet were obtained at a frequency of 67%, in the culture of immature flowers picked at 4 weeks after flower bud differentiation, while all leaf stripes disappeared in the culture of immature flowers picked 1 and 5 weeks after flower bud differentiation. In vivo growth of plantlet from immature flower buds was better than those from lateral buds, and the flowering of 27.8% showed in the greenhouse culture of plantlet from immature culture, but the plantlets from lateral buds did not flower at all. The plantlets rooted on the medium with 0.5 mg/L IBA were the most favorable in green house culture, and the kinds and concentrations of auxin in vitro did not have any influence on variation of plane cultured in greenhouse.
