  • Reflectors for reflective LCDs are required to be able to control the direction of the image and viewing angle range for optimal display. To achieve these required characteristics, we performed elementary experiments on conventional reflectors, and theoretical analyzed the reflective property of rough surfaces by using scattering theory. We also proposed a reflector structure by which we can control the direction of the image and viewing angle characteristics simultaneously. If we fabricate and apply this reflector to the reflective LCDs, we can realize high performance display.

  • Motion-induced artifacts on LCDs appear as blurred boundaries and/or color aberration between the moving objects and background. Perceived degree of the motion-induced artifacts depends on the blur width as well as color difference. This paper presents a quantitative measure for the motion-induced artifacts on LCDs. Performance of the proposed measure is verified by calculating correlation coefficients between the proposed measures and the results of human visual tests performed on the 240 Hz and 120 Hz scanning LCD TVs.

  • Low resistivity interconnection and high-mobility channel are required to realize ultrahigh-definition LCDs such as 4k ${\times}$ 2k TVs. We evaluated fully Cu-based gate and Source/Drain interconnections, consisting of stacked pure-Cu/Cu-Mn layers for TFT-LCDs, and found the underlying Cu-Mn alloy film has superior adhesion to glass substrates and CVD-SiOx films. It was also confirmed that wet etching of the Cu/Cu-Mn films without residues and low contact resistance with both channel IGZO and pixel ITO films can be obtained. It is thus considered that the stacked Cu/Cu-Mn structure is one of candidates to replacing conventionally pure-Cu/refractory metal.

  • In this study, the threshold voltage and the response time of thermal stressed TN-LCDs showed the same performances on none thermal stressed TN-LCDs. There was little change in TN cells. Also, while increasing thermal stress time, the transmittances of TN-LCDs on the rubbed PI surface were almost the same, But the thermal stability of TN cell was deteriorated.

  • LCDs show motion image blur due to slow response time and a hold-type driving method. In this paper, we investigate motion blur phenomena and quantitatively show that the motion blur can be significantly reduced through a combination of dynamic capacitance compensation (DCC) and black data insertion.

  • We report on a simple method of fabricating multimode transflective liquid crystal displays (LCDs) using the photoalignment technique. Using a self-masking process of ultraviolet light by the reflector as a photomask as well as a reflective mirror, the periodic multimode is obtained with no additional fabrication processes. Moreover, variations of the cell gap are not required for such trasflective LCDs

  • We present a family of elaborate numerical models for simulation and systematic optimization of complex LCDs for demanding applications (e.g. LCD-TV). These numerical models comprise modules for solving LCD-related problems in one, two and three dimensions. The three modules feature an intuitive graphical user surface for a jump-start into modeling, a common database for a range of materials and components as well as sophisticated and proven algorithms with more than 15 years of reliable performance in the LCD-industry. Methods for obtaining data required for the modeling of key components are presented.

  • We developed a novel Fame interpolation method to interpolate a frame between two successive original frames. Using this method, we are able to apply a double-rate driving method instead of an impulse driving method where a black Fame is inserted between two successive original Fames. The double-rate driving method enables improvement to the motion blur of LCDs caused by the characteristics of human vision without reducing the luminosity of the whole screen. Here, we report on the initial model of our frame interpolation method.

  • This paper presents a new panel structure and the associated driving method for TFT-LCDs, which is called the alternate-column driving (ACD). The ACD allows us to implement the dot-inversion driving with much lower power consumption than in conventional methods. This paper describes the ACD and analyzes the image quality and power consumption of the ACD.

  • In this paper, a general performance of the PSS-LCD or Polarization Shielded Smectic Liquid Crystal Display is discussed. This smectic base LCD does not use any spontaneous polarization, but uses induced polarization just sa me with current nematic base LCDs. Specific initial molecular alignment as well as specific cell design realizes ext remely fast optical response speed with native wide viewing angle. Moreover, this performance is provided by full compatible electronics for current conventional LCDs. A general performance of the PSS-LCD is introduced herein.
