A Protection Circuit for the Power Supply of a Gas Discharge Lamp

  • In order to drive gas discharge lamps, DC-AC converters with a LCC resonant tank, whose output voltage is adjusted by a variable frequency control are frequently used. However, when they are activated by varying the operating frequency, converters are frequently damaged by unstable operation, due to the rising and falling of the operating frequency near the resonant frequency. To solve this problem, a simple protection circuit for the power supply of a gas discharge lamp is proposed in this paper. This circuit senses the primary current of the main transformer. Using this protection circuit, the operating frequency of the lamp driving inverter system is kept close to and on the right side of the resonant frequency and the inverter is always operated in the ZVS condition. The resulting stable variable frequency operation allows various gas discharge lamps to be tested without the risk of damaging the main switches, because the protection circuit can protect the power MOSFETs of bridge converters from abnormal conditions. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed protection circuit are verified through the experimental results.

  • The aim of this paper is to propose a design method for the double-sided LCC compensation circuit for 6.6kW electric vehicle (EVs) wireless charger. The analysis and comparison with several compensation topologies such as SS, SP, PS, PP and the hybrid LCC compensation is presented. It has been found that the hybrid LCC compensation has superior performance in comparison with other topologies. The design procedure for the EV charger is presented and the PSIM simulation results are provided.

  • This paper describes the design and implementation of a 2.5kW (500V, 5A) simmer circuit that maintains the ionization of xenon gas inside the lamp. The design is based on a LCC resonant converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) with above resonant frequency to take advantage of high power density from using parasitic elements such as the leakage inductance in a power transformer. In addition, since the converter has current source output characteristics, it is suitable for maintaining ionization of the lamp having the negative resistance load characteristic. To verify this converter design, PSpice modeling was performed. Finally, the developed simmer circuit is verified by a resistive load of rated performance and the Ionization maintenance operation of the xenon flash lamp.

  • 본 논문에서는 SEPP-LCC형 부하 공진 고주파 인버터의 한 회로형식을 제안하고, 그 동작원리에 관해서 명확히 하였다. 제안한 인버터는 스위칭 소자 양단에 병렬로 커패시터를 추가함으로써 스위칭 소자의 턴-온과 턴-오프시에 발생하는 스위칭 손실, 노이즈, 스트레스 등을 줄일 수 있다. 범용성 있는 회로해석을 위하여 무차원화 파라미터를 도입하였고, 동작특성 및 평가를 통하여 얻은 특성치를 이용하여 회로를 설계하였다. 또한, 실험을 통하여 이론해석의 정당성을 입증하였다.

  • The CCFL dimming control methods are generally used lamp current regulation or average current adjustment method feeding the CCFL inverter. Inverter operation frequency is higher than resonant frequency for safe operation. In this study, we design the half-bridge type series and parallel resonant converter circuit that switches at variable frequency modulation methods to control the output power. This method has advantages such as low EMI and reduced harmonics, and it is convenient for dimming control using a microprocessor. The validity of this study is confirmed from the simulation and experimental results.

  • A lithium polymer battery-based 9 kJ/s high-voltage capacitor charger, which comprises two stages, is proposed. A modified LCC resonant converter and resonant circuit are introduced at the first and second stages, respectively. In the first stage, the methods for handling low-voltage and high-current batteries are considered. Delta-wye three-phase transformers are used to generate a high output voltage through the difference between the phase and line-to-line voltages. Another method is placing the series resonant capacitor of the LCC resonant components on the transformer secondary side, which conducts considerably low current compared with the transformer primary side. On the basis of the stable operation of the first charging stage, the secondary charging stage generates final output voltage by using the resonance. This additional stage protects the rectifying diodes from the negative voltage when the output capacitor is discharged for a short time. The inductance and capacitance of the resonance components are selected by considering the resonance charging time. The design procedure for each stage with the aforementioned features is suggested, and its performance is verified by not only simulation but also experimental results.

  • This paper has described about principle and form of proposed circuit made use of soft switching technology ZVS(Zero-Voltage-Switching) to reduce turn on and off loss at switching. also, the analysis of the proposed circuit has described by using normalized parameter and operating characteristics have been evaluated as to switching frequency and parameters. In addition, this paper proves the propriety of theoretical analysis in terms of the experiments.

  • Electronic ballast uses various resonant type filters, which perform many important functions such as filtering the high frequency harmonics, shaping the proper lamp current waveform and regulating the lamp power. In this paper, characteristics of resonant type filters are reviewed and the matching problem between inverter and resonant filter are described. Transfer function which is always necessary for the circuit parameter design is derived in case of LCC filter type as an example.

  • This paper proposed one of various acoustic resonance reduction technique for three kinds of ceramic lamps (CDM-150, HCI-150, CMH-150). To reduce the acoustic resonance in the HID lamps, the researched results showed that the frequency modulated signal with the triangle waveform is very effective in order to drive th LCC type half-bridge inverter for HID lamp. Experimental results proved that the acoustic resonance could be rejected, if the adequate switching frequency band is selected and the driving signal frequency is modulated with a triangle waveform.
