  • As environmental damage increase by a highly developed material civilization of today, many companies take a growing immensely interest in the influence of environment for beginning a new paradigm year by year. The previous assessments dose not run the gamut of industry but is confined within a certain facility or an area. Industrial processes and operations can not be accomplished independently but are connected with each others through suppliers and customer, and these ideas are fundamental notions of Life Cycle Assessment(LCA). This paper will introduce Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) n environment which is rising, and would like to build environmental management system using approach of Quality Function Development(QFD) and Safety Function Development(SFD) belonging to the assessment method.

Exploring Capabilities of BIM Tools for Housing Refurbishment in the UK

  • Currently whole-house refurbishment for substantial energy efficiency improvement of existing housing stock is needed to achieve the targeted 80% CO2 emission reduction. As whole-house refurbishment requires a larger capital investment for lower CO2 emission, the simultaneous use of Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodologies are recommended to generate affordable refurbishment solutions. However, two methodologies are difficult to use due to a lack of proper LCC and LCA datasets. As a response to the current problems, many researchers explore potentials in Building Information Modelling (BIM) to improve current construction practice. As a result, a BIM tool - IES IMPACT (Integrated Material Profile And Costing Tool) - has been introduced to the UK construction industry for simultaneous calculation of LCC and LCA. Thus, this research aims at examining the capability and limitation of the IES VE/IMPACT as a BIM tool for whole-house refurbishment. This research reveals that the IES VE/IMPACT is feasible for whole-house refurbishment by providing LCC and LCA information simultaneously for informed decision on refurbishment solution selection. This research shed lights on the current problems lying on the data exchange between two different BIM tools. It is revealed that additional efforts from construction professionals and industry are required to make reliable BIM objects library with LCC and LCA datasets.

  • Currently the problem of air pollution caused by the motor vehicle emission is of the most serious problems to be solved. Life Cycle Assessment is a process to evaluate the environmental burdens associated with a product or process by identifying and quantifying energy and materials used and wasters to the environment. This paper establishes a Life Cycle Assessment Systems which satisfies the criteria motor vehicle emission for the automobile producers who are currently producing the automobiles with catalytic convert. This plan also considered the constraint of the effective motor vehicle emission by way of the exhaust gas recirculation, electronic fuel injection, closed loop carburetor. In order to develope the performance of the LCA systems, the recent emissions test data have also been applied. The result of the development LCA systems has proved that the LCA plans presented in this paper satisfies the criteria motor vehicle emission and will be contributed to constrain the motor vehicle emission most effectively.

LCA에 기초한 패시브 공동주택의 친환경성 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Environmental Impact Assessment for Passive Apartment based on Life Cycle Assessment)

  • 본 연구는 전과정 평가에 기초한 패시브 공동주택의 친환경성을 평가하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이를 위해 LCA에 관한 이론적 고찰을 토대로 전과정 단계별 물량정보 및 에너지 사용량 데이터를 구축하였다. 또한, 국가 LCI DB에 기초한 원단위 데이터베이스를 활용하여 산성화, 부영양화, 지구온난화, 자원고갈, 오존층파괴, 광화학적산화물에 대한 환경영향을 평가 분석하였다. 그 결과 패시브 공동주택이 일반 공동주택보다 6대 환경영향에서 환경적으로 우수한 것으로 평가 되었으며 이는 에너지 소비량의 절감이 운영단계에서 6대 환경영향을 큰 폭으로 감소시켰기 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. 이로 인해 건설단계에서의 환경영향의 비중이 상대적으로 증가됨에 따라 기존 에너지 절감 중심의 친환경 기술의 적용과 함께 투입물량의 절감 및 환경영향이 적은 친환경 건축재료의 적용을 통해 전 생애 주기 관점에서 친환경 기술의 적용이 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

Life Cycle Impacts of Flexible-fiber Deep-bed Filter Compared to Sand-Filter including Coagulation and Sedimentation in Water Treatment Plant

  • Recently a new technology called the flexible-fiber deep-bed filter (FDF) claimed to replace the conventional sand filter including coagulation and sedimentation filter (CSF) processes in the water treatment plant. Therefore the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach was applied for evaluating the life cycle impacts of FDF compared with those of CSF. The used LCA softwares were the Simapro 6 and PASS and their life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methodologies were the Eco-indicator 99 and the Korean Eco-indicator, respectively. The goal of this LCA was to identify environmental loads of CSF and FDF from raw material to disposal stages. The scopes of the systems have been determined based on the experiences of existing CSF and FDF. The function was to remove suspended solids by filtration and the functional unit was $1\;m^3$/day. Both systems showed that most environmental impacts were occurred during the operation stage. To reduce the environmental impacts the coagulants and electricity consumptions need to be cut down. If the CSF was replaced with the FDF, the environmental impacts would be reduced in most of the impact categories. The LCA results of Korean Eco-indicator and Eco- indicator99 were quite different from each other due to the indwelling differences such as category indicators, impact categories, characterization factors, normalization values and weighting factors. This study showed that the life cycle assessment could be a valuable tool for evaluating the environmental impact of the new technology which was introduced in water treatment process.

LCA기법을 이용한 하수처리장의 환경영향 평가 (Environmental Impact Assessment of Wastewater Treatment Plant Using Life Cycle Assessment)

  • Comprehensive environmental impact of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was evaluated with life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology based on ISO 14040. As environmental impact assessment method, Eco-indicator 95 and Eco-indicator 99 were used. The studied WWTP had a capacity of $100,000m^3/d$, and its life span of civil structure and main machinery was designed to 40 years and 20 years, respectively. As the results, more than 95% of environmental impact was produced by using electricity and chemical use in operation stage. In construction stage, temporary shoring facility was the major reason of environmental load, however, its impact was much less than those by operation utilities.

  • 기후변화에 대한 우려가 커지면서 건설산업에서도 환경부하를 줄이기 위해 지속적으로 노력하고 있으며, 환경부하를 산정하기 위한 효과적인 방법론으로써 LCA (life cycle assessment)가 제시되고 있다. 그러나, LCA는 환경부하량 산정을 위해 작업에 투입되는 자원량에 대한 정보가 필요하기 때문에 이러한 정보의 확보가 어려운 초기 설계단계의 환경적 검토에는 활용되지 못하고 있다. 이 연구에서는 도로의 배수시설물을 대상으로 표준단면에 기반한 작업물량산출체계를 개발하고 환경부하량을 산출할 수 있는 모델에 활용하였다. 이 모델은 초기 설계단계의 가용정보만으로 LCA에 필요한 자원량을 산정함으로써 환경부하량을 산출할 수 있다. 모델의 유효성을 검증하기 위해 5개의 검증사례를 적용하였으며 원단위추정모델 및 회귀모델과 비교하였다. 그 결과 평균 9.94%의 절대오차율평균을 나타내 다른 모델보다 상대적으로 정확하며 초기 설계단계에서 사용할 수 있는 유효한 모델이라는 점이 확인되었다.

  • Due to sustainable development, international environmental regulations have been reinforced continuously. Especially, Kyoto protocol related to energy consumption affects to national production system seriously. Even if railroad is the most environmental- friendly transportation, it is necessary to improve its environment. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a representative tool to evaluate the environment impacts of a product. In the EU's railroad companies, the recycling efficiency and the waste emissions of rolling stocks have improved considering their environment impacts with LCA from a design step. Also, the LCA system of Korean electric motor units has been developed to build an environmentally sound railroad as one of national transportation core technology R&D projects. Therefore, the introduction of LCA will be required to decrease environmental impacts released from rolling stocks in the future.
