  • This study was performed to compare the analytical results among L2000DX and two GC/ECD methods (rapid and conventional). 15 samples of transformer oils were collected to compare the analytical results. In the analytical results of PCBs-containing transformer oil, the PCBs concentrations were in the range of 4.4 mg/L to 182.8 mg/L with L2000DX, N.D. to 14.63 mg/L with conventional GC/ECD, and N.D. to 13.03 mg/L using rapid GC/ECD. The PCB concentrations detected with the L2000DX showed a large difference to those detected with GC/ECD methods. Otherwise, little difference was shown between the two GC/ECD methods at a concentration range lower than 4 mg/L, although the rapid GC/ECD method tended to detect a slightly lower concentration near the regulation criteria of Korea for 2 mg/L.

  • Anaerobic/aerobic reactor system was used to treat a synthetic wastewater with glucose as carbon sources(0.38~2.29 kg COD/m3.day) and Acid Red 14(1.05 "24.00 g Acid Red 141m3.day, color degree of 570 ~ 1710). COD removal efficiency by the anaerobic stage in operation period were above 90 % organic loading rate of 0.38 ~ 2.29 kg COD/m3.day(except, adaptation period) and the removal efficiency of the whole system were above 96 %. The decolorization of the Acid Red 14 was through the alteration of the dye structure(or cleavage of the Azo bond) during the anaerobic treatment. In the A/A system, the anaerobic stage played an essential role in removing both color and COD. In addition it also improves biodegradability of dye f3r further aerobic treatment. After operation, average MLSS concentration of anaerobic sludge reactor, anaerobic fixed-bed reactor and aerobic fixed-bed reactor were 17100mg/L, 20000mg/L, and 10000mg/L, respectively.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigated the possibility of Meles meles as an edible functional resource. To assess the effects of Meles meles fermented liquid(ML) with medicinal plants in postmenopausal women, the menopause symptoms, hematological and serum chemical variables and bone health indices were examined. Twenty five postmenopausal women participated in the study. As a result, in postmenopausal women, ML supplements were effective in reducing the incidence of menopause symptoms, such as insomnia(44.0%), sensitivity(40.0%), headache(34.0%), hot flush and decreased vaginal lubrication(20.0%) after 12 weeks. Also serum estradiol and calcitonin and calcium levels were 23.27 pg/mL, 14.88 pg/mL and 8.86 mg/dL before the ML intake. Levels were significantly increased of estradiol and calcitonin and calcium after ML intake during 12 weeks to 30.36 pg/mL, 21.61 pg/mL and 10.01 mg/dL. Osteocalcin and bone alkaline phosphatase activity were 14.36 ng/mL, 21.55 U/L before the ML intake, but according to ML intake, the levels were significantly decreased. In conclusion, ML play benefical roles in the prevention of bone loss and menopause symptoms. Howere current data are not sufficient to determine the effective doses for benefical effect as well as harmful effect and support dietary recommendation level for ML. Therefore, our results should be viewed with caution. But Meles meles fermented liquid with medicinal plants can be used as possible food resources and functional food materials, more studies are needed to identify the proper mechanism of ML.

  • Gastrointestinal infections kill over two million people each year, and pathogen contamination of livestock causes many cases of food poisoning. Two candidate intestinal probiotic strains, L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14 were found to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhi, Shigella dysenteriae, E. coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, L. innocua, Enterococcus faecalis, and Bacteroides fragilis. In a series of mouse experiments, L. rhamosus GR-1 and L rhamnosus GG protected against S. typhimurium infection and translocation to the liver and spleen, reduced mortality and induced intestinal phagocytic and immunoglobulin responses. In a second series of experiments, the combination of L. rhamnosus GR-1 and L. fermentum RC-14 was superior to L. rhamnosus GG and placebo in protecting the mice from the lethal effect of salmonella. In summary, the use of combinations of probiotic lactobacilli as dietary supplements or foods could be considered for people at high risk of salmonella intestinal infection. Given the post-infection complications that can arise, such natural methods warrant further exploration especially given the increasing problem of antibiotic resistance and the lack of alternative measures available to many developing countries.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of iron supplementation and nutrition education on the iron status and anemia of middle school girls in Ulsan city in Korea. The subjects were already diagnosed as having anemia (hemoglobin < 12 g/dL) or iron deficiency (ferritin < 12 ng/mL and/or transferrin sataturation < 14 %). Over a period of three months, one iron tablet (80 mg Fe as ferrous sulfate/day) was administered to the iron deficient subjects and two tablets (160 mg Fe as ferrous sulfate/day) were administered to the anemia subjects. Total calorie intake of subjects was 82.1 % of RDA. The iron intake of subjects was 91.3 % of RDA and the Ca intake was 78.8 % of RDA. The basal hemoglobin concentration of subjects averaged 12.8 1.2 g/dL, and this increased significantly (p < 0.001) to 13.2 0.9 g/dL after iron supplementation. The basal ferritin concentrations were 14.9 14.2 ng/mL and these significantly increased to 26.6 19.8 ng/mL (p < 0.001). The level of total iron binding protein (TIBC) significantly decreased from the initial 523.1 108.7 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dL to 462.2 90.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/dL (p < 0.001) after iron supplementation. Anemia symptoms such as‘Being bruised easily’, ‘Inflamed inner mouth’, and ‘Pale face’ improved significantly after iron supplementation in the subjects. There was a negative correlation between their class & year ranking and serum iron level, transferrin saturation after nutritional education and iron supplementation. It was shown, therefore, that the higher the improvement of their anemia level after iron supplementation, the higher their academic performance. It was shown that there was some improvement of their dietary attitudes after nutritional education, and that their serum level related to anemia symptoms and iron nutrition was improved after iron supplementation.

  • This study was conducted to examine the correlation among meals variety, obesity index, blood pressure, and lipid profiles of Korean adults. A total of 308 adults(men 124, women 184) measured the anthropometric characteristics, blood pressure, dietary intake using 24-hour recall method, and serum lipid profile. The average ages of the study subjects were 50.9 yrs in men and 51.4 yrs in women. The average height, weight and BMI were 166.3 cm, 68.4 kg, $24.7\;kg/cm^2$ in men and 154.3 cm, 59.8 kg, $25.0\;kg/cm^2$ in women, respectively. The numbers of food items in meal of men and women were 14.1, 15.9 for breakfast, 15.7, 15.9 for lunch, 14.7, 14.1 for dinner, respectively. The numbers of dish items in meal of men and women were 4.0, 4.3 for breakfast, 4.3, 4.3 for lunch, 4.2, 3.9 for dinner, respectively. The average blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and atherogenic index were 126.6/76.0 mmHg, 181.0 mg/dL, 157.7 mg/dL, 40.9 mg/dL, 108.6 mg/dL, 3.5 in men and 123.2/73.6 mmHg, 185.0 mg/dL, 137.3 mg/dL, 44.8 mg/dL, 112.7 mg/dL, 3.2 in women, respectively. The total cholesterol was negatively correlated to the number of food item for lunch(p<0.05). Therefore, more systematic studies to investigate the meal variety roles of blood lipids in meals of adults were required.

  • We evaluate the convolution sum $W_{a,b}(n):=\sum_{al+bm=n}{\sigma}(l){\sigma}(m)$ for (a, b) = (1, 28),(4, 7),(2, 7) for all positive integers n. We use a modular form approach. We also re-evaluate the known sums $W_{1,14}(n)$ and $W_{1,7}(n)$ with our method. We then use these evaluations to determine the number of representations of n by the octonary quadratic form $x^2_1+x^2_2+x^2_3+x^2_4+7(x^2_5+x^2_6+x^2_7+x^2_8)$. Finally we express the modular forms ${\Delta}_{4,7}(z)$, ${\Delta}_{4,14,1}(z)$ and ${\Delta}_{4,14,2}(z)$ (given in [10, 14]) as linear combinations of eta quotients.

  • Nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone (NNK) is considered a key tobacco smoke carcinogen inducing lung tumors. Physalis peruviana L (harankash) is considered one plant with marked health benefits. This study aimed to evaluate Physalis peruviana L effect on the toxic effect of NNK induced lung cancer in the rats by using pulmonary histopathological, immunohistochemical and DNA flow cytometric analyses. Sixty adult male rats were divided into four groups, each consisting of fifteen animals. The first group received saline, the second received two successive toxic doses of NNK only while the third received two successive toxic doses of NNK with a single daily dose of Physalis peruviana L. The fourth group received a single daily dose of Physalis peruviana L only. Toxic doses of NNK induced hyperplasia and adenocarcinoma in the lung and positive immunoreactivity for Ki-67 and p53 staining with disturbance of the lung DNA content. Administration of Physalis peruviana L with NNK led to a mild pulmonary hyperplasia and weak expression of Ki-67 and p53 with an improvement in the lung DNA content. Physalis peruviana L may protect against NNK induced lung carcinogenesis due to its antioxidant and anti-proliferative effects.
