  • Cyclo(L-prolyl-L-phenylalanyl) [cyclo(pro-phe)] was isolated from Streptomyces sp. AMLK-335 and found to inhibit DNA topoisomerase I activity. In a DNA relaxation assay using supercoiled pBR322 DNA, cyclo(pro-phe) inhibited the DNA topoisomerase activity more strongly than camptothecin, a known topoisomerase inhibitor. However, at a concentration of $10{\mu}M$, cyclo(pro-phe) produced a lower degree of DNA relaxation than camptothecin, therefore, the inhibition of topoisomerase I activity by cyclo(pro-phe) was also found to be dose dependent. Accordingly, the current results suggest that cyclo(pro-phe) may be a novel inhibitor of topoisomerase I.

  • Two poplar clones, I-214 (Populus euramericana) and Peace (P. Koreana × P. trichocarpa), were grown for 21 days in growth chambers at different CO₂concentrations (350, 700 and 2,000 μL·L-1). I-214 has stomata responding to environmental conditions in normal ways and Peace has unresponsive stomata to environmental factors including light, ABA, water stress and CO₂. In both plants, elevated CO₂ stmulated the growth of plant parts, especially leaf dry weight. And a CO₂ enrichment of 700 μL·L-1 CO₂ caused increment of net assimilation rate (NAR). The growth responses of these plants to CO₂ enrichment were different especially at high CO₂ condition (2,000 μL·L-1 CO₂). The total dry weight in Peace increased up to 2,000 μL·L-1 CO₂ but not in I-214. A CO₂ enrichment of 2,000 2,000 μL·L-1 CO₂ had little effect on NAR of I-214 but enhanced NAR of Peace. Although it is uncertain whether the different responses to CO₂ enrichment between I-214 and Peace resulted from the different properties of stomatal responses to long-term CO₂ treatment, the decrease in NAR is probably due in part to CO₂-induced stomatal closure in I-214 but not in Peace.

  • The biological effects of the iminoctadine tris (albesilate) and kresoxim-methyl for the protection of citrus postharvest diseases caused by penicillium spp. were assayed. In vitro tests, $EC_{50}$ values of iminoctadine tris(albesilate) were $0.01{\sim}0.02\;and\;0.01{\mu}g$ a.i./mL against mycelial growth of P. italicum and P. digitatum, respectively, but iminoctadine tris(albesilate) at $0.64{\mu}g$ a.i. /mL inhibited a little mycelial growth of unknown Penicillium sp. which produced another symptom different to blue and green mold caused by P. italicum and P. digitatum, respectively. And against germination and growth of germ tube of P. italicum and P. digitatum, $EC_{50}$ value of iminoctadine tris(albesilate) was $0.0013{\sim}0.0025{\mu}g$ a.i./mL. But spore germination of unknown Penicillium spp. was not nearly inhibited at $0.2{\mu}g$ a.i./mL. $EC_{50}$ values of kresoxim-methyl were $0.08{\sim}0.16$, 0.04 and $0.16{\mu}g$ a.i./mL against mycelial growth of P. italicum, P. digitatum and unknown Penicillium sp., respectively, and $0.04{\sim}0.08{\mu}g$ a.i./mL and $0.01{\sim}0.02{\mu}g$ a.i./mL against germination and growth of germ tube of P. italicum and unknown Penicillium sp., and P. digitatum, respectively. Iminoctadine tris(albesilate) and kresoxim-methyl were markedly effective to control the postharvest disease by 7 days spray prior to harvest. When the fruits were sprayed with iminoctadine-tris(albesilate) ($200{\mu}g$ a.i./mL) and kresoxim-methyl ($155{\mu}g$ a.i./mL) 7 days prior to harvest and subsequently stored for 90 days, the percentage of diseased fruit by Penicillium spp. was $3.6{\pm}1.8%$ in treatment of kresoxim-methyl and $5.9{\pm}1.8%$ in iminoctadine-tris(albesilate), respectively. On the other hand, tile percentage of diseased fruit was relatively high, $20.3{\pm}10.0%\;and\;19.5{\pm}9.6%$ in thiophanate-methyl ($700{\mu}g$ a.i./mL) and non-treatment, respectively. Maximum residue amount (ppm) among fruits (flesh and peel) assayed 0, 30, 60 and 90 days after storage was 0.45 and 0.10 ppm in treatment of kresoxim-methyl and iminoctadine, respectively.

  • In this paper, we try to generalize ultraproducts in the category of locally convex spaces. To do so, we introduce D-ultracolimits. It is known [7] that the topology on a non-trivial ultraproduct in the category T $V^{ec}$ of topological vector spaces and continuous linear maps is trivial. To generalize the category Ba $n_{1}$ of Banach spaces and linear contractions, we introduce the category L $C_{1}$ of vector spaces endowed with families of semi-norms closed underfinite joints and linear contractions (see Definition 1.1) and its subcategory, L $C_{2}$ determined by Hausdorff objects of L $C_{1}$. It is shown that L $C_{1}$ contains the category LC of locally convex spaces and continuous linear maps as a coreflective subcategory and that L $C_{2}$ contains the category Nor $m_{1}$ of normed linear spaces and linear contractions as a coreflective subcategory. Thus L $C_{1}$ is a suitable category for the study of locally convex spaces. In L $C_{2}$, we introduce $l_{\infty}$(I. $E_{i}$ ) for a family ( $E_{i}$ )$_{i.mem.I}$ of objects in L $C_{2}$ and then for an ultrafilter u on I. we have a closed subspace $N_{u}$ . Using this, we construct ultraproducts in L $C_{2}$. Using the relationship between Nor $m_{1}$ and L $C_{2}$ and that between Nor $m_{1}$ and Ba $n_{1}$, we show thatour ultraproducts in Nor $m_{1}$ and Ba $n_{1}$ are exactly those in the literatures. For the terminology, we refer to [6] for the category theory and to [8] for ultraproducts in Ba $n_{1}$..

  • In this paper, we study the generalized Randers change $^*L(x,y)=L(x,y)+b_i(x,y)y^i$ from the Brewald metric L and the h-vector $b_i$. And in search for a non-Berwald Landsberg metric, we obtain the conditions on $b_i(x,y)$ under which $^*L$ is a Landsberg metric.

  • Let (R,m) be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring with an infinite residue field and let $J = (a_1, \cdots, a_l)$ be a minimal reduction of an equimultiple ideal I of R. In this paper we shall prove that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $I^2 = JI$. (2) $gr_I(R)/mgr_I(R)$ is Cohen-Macaulay with minimal multiplicity at its maximal homogeneous ideal N. (3) $N^2 = (a'_1, \cdots, a'_l)N$, where $a'_i$ denotes the images of $a_i$ in I/mI for $i = 1, \cdots, l$.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the perioperative myocardial damage in pediatric congenital heart disease with the cardiac specific protein of cardiac troponin I(cTpn-I). Methods : All 25 pediatric patients who were diagnosed with tetralogy of Fallot or double outlet right ventricle were classified as group A(acyanotic, $SaO_2$ >90%), group B(mildly cyanotic, $SaO_2$ >80-90%) and group C(moderately cyanotic, $SaO_2$ <80%). The control group D was consisted of 10 patients with ventricular septal defects who were operated in the same period. We measured preoperative hemoglobin, preoperative and postoperative(24 and 72 hour) arterial oxygen saturation, cTpn-I and creatine kinase(CK-MB). Results : Total 25 patients were subdivided into 6 of group A, 12 of group B and 7 of group C. The concentrations of preoperative cTpn-I were $0.23{\pm}0.12ng/mL$ in group A, $0.25{\pm}00.12 ng/mL$ in group B, $0.26{\pm}0.13ng/mL$ in group C. And the concentrations of cTpn-I in postoperative 24 hour were $10.04{\pm}5.28ng/mL$ in group A, $12.50{\pm}6.86ng/mL$ in group B, $12.55{\pm}9.90ng/mL$ in group C. Which revealed cTpn-I in group C was higher than that of the another less cyanotic groups. In addition, the concentration of cTpn-I of group C in postoperative 72 hour was higher than any other groups. The concentration of cTpn-I in postoperative 72 hour was statistically correlated with that in postoperative 24 hour and preoperative arterial oxygen saturation(P=0.001). Conclusion : Preoperative chronic cyanosis can influence on the postoperative concentration of cTpn-I in pediatric cardiac patients, which means impairment on the postoperative myocardial recovery.

  • Nitric oxide (NO) has both neuroprotective and neurotoxic effects depending on its concentration and the experimental model. We tested the effects of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), a nonselective nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor, and aminoguanidine, a selective inducible NOS (iNOS) inhibitor, on kainic acid (KA)-induced seizures and hippocampal CA3 neuronal death. L-NAME (50 mg/kg, i.p.) and/or aminoguanidine (200 mg/kg, i.p.) were administered 1 h prior to the intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of KA. Pretreatment with L-NAME significantly increased KA-induced CA3 neuronal death, iNOS expression, and activation of microglia. However, pretreatment with aminoguanidine significantly suppressed both the KA-induced and L-NAME-aggravated hippocampal CA3 neuronal death with concomitant decreases in iNOS expression and microglial activation. The protective effect of aminoguanidine was maintained for up to 2 weeks. Furthermore, iNOS knockout mice ($iNOS^{-1-}$) were resistant to KA-induced neuronal death. The present study demonstrates that aminoguanidine attenuates KA-induced neuronal death, whereas L-NAME aggravates neuronal death, in the CA3 region of the hippocampus, suggesting that NOS isoforms play different roles in KA-induced excitotoxicity.
