Numerical Performance Evaluation of an Ultra-small Lapple Cyclone Separator (초소형 Lapple 사이클론 집진기의 수치적 성능평가)

  • The purpose of this study is to numerically evaluate the collection performance of an ultra-small Lapple cyclone separator for 1~10 ㎛ particles introduced at flow rate of 10 L/min. The numerical evaluation reveals that a static pressure drop occurs more dominantly inside of the cyclone separator than at the inlet and the vortex finder. Also a fluid flow in the cyclone separator is confirmed to have a helical structure heading upward in the center of cyclone separator and downward in the vicinity of wall. The investigation on dust collection efficiency of the Lapple cyclone separator shows that particles of 4~8 ㎛ diameters are collected at very lower efficiency than other sizes. Then, the cut-point diameter of the cyclone separator is 1.48 ㎛.

  • For the first time, the characteristics of solid circulation rate ($G_S$) were investigated in a three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) viscous circulating fluidized bed (TPCFB). The solid circulation rate was controlled separately by adjusting the experimental apparatus as well as operating variables. Effects of primary and secondary liquid velocities ($U_{L1}$ and $U_{L2}$), gas velocity ($U_G$), particle size ($d_p$), height of particles piled up in the solid recycle device (h), and viscosity of continuous liquid media (${\mu}_L$) on the value of $G_S$ were determined. The experimental results showed that the value of $G_S$ increased with increases in the values of $U_{L1}$, $U_{L2}$, h and ${\mu}_L$, while it decreased with increasing $U_G$ and $d_p$ in TPCFBs with viscous liquid media. The values of $G_S$ were well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups within this experimental conditions.

  • To evaluate the acute effects of fine particles on pulmonary function, a longitudinal study was conducted. This study was carried out for the schoolchildren (3rd and 6th grades) living in Beijing, China. Children were asked to record their daily levels of peak expiratory flow rate using portable peak flow meter (mini-Wright) for 40 days. The relationship between daily PEFR and fine particle levels was analyzed using a mixed linear regression models including gender, height, the presence of respiratory symptoms, and daily average temperature and relative humidity as extraneous variables. The total number of students participating in this longitudinal study was 87. Daily measured PEFR was in the range of $253{\sim}501L/min$. On the daily basis, a PEFR measured in the morning was shown to be lower than that measured in the evening (or afternoon). The daily mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ over the study period were $180.2\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $103.2\;{\mu}g/m^3$, respectively. The IQR (inter-quartile range) of $PM_{10}$ and $PM_{2.5}$ were $91.8\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $58.0\;{\mu}g/m^3$. Daily mean PEFR was regressed with the 24-hour average $PM_{10}$ (or $PM_{2.5}$) levels, weather information such as air temperature and relative humidity, and individual characteristics including gender, height, and respiratory symptoms. The analysis showed that the increase of fine particle concentrations was negatively associated with the variability in PEFR. The IQR increments of $PM_{10}$ or $PM_{2.5}$ (at 1-day time lag) were also shown to be related with 1.54L/min (95% Confidence intervals -2.14, -0.94) and 1.56L/min (95% CI -2.16, -0.95) decline in PEFR.

Effect of Particle Size of Zinc Oxides on Cytotoxicity and Cell Permeability in Caco-2 Cells

  • The cell permeability and cytotoxic effects of different-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles were investigated using a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line called Caco-2. Morphological observation by scanning electron microscopy revealed that three zinc oxides with different mean particle sizes (ZnO-1, 20 nm; ZnO-2, 90~200 nm; ZnO-3, $1\sim5\;{\mu}m$) tended to aggregate, particularly in the case of ZnO-1. When cytotoxicities of all three sizes of zinc oxide particles were measured at concentration ranges of $1\sim1000\;{\mu}g$/mL, significant decreases in cell viability were observed at concentrations of $50\;{\mu}g$/mL and higher. Among the three zinc oxides, ZnO-1 showed the lowest viability at $50\;{\mu}g$/mL in Caco-2 cells, followed by ZnO-2 and ZnO-3. The permeate concentration of ZnO-1 from the apical to the basolateral side in the Caco-2 model system after four hours was about three-fold higher than that of either ZnO-2 or ZnO-3. These results demonstrated that ZnO-1, with a 20 nm mean particle size, had poorer viability and better permeability in Caco-2 cells than ZnO-2 and ZnO-3.

  • The dynamic behavior of numerous grains interacting with each other can be easily observed. In this study, this dynamic behavior was analyzed based on the contact between numerous grains. The discrete element method was used for analyzing the dynamic behavior of each particle and the neighboring-cell algorithm was employed for detecting their contact. The Hertzian and tangential sliding friction contact models were used for calculating the contact force acting between the particles. A GPU-based parallel program was developed for conducting the computer simulation and calculating the numerous contacts. The dam break experiment was performed to verify the simulation results. The reliability of the program was verified by comparing the results of the simulation with those of the experiment.

Synthesis and Particle Size Control of δ-FeOOH Using H2O2 Oxidizing Agent (H2O2 산화제를 이용한 δ-FeOOH의 합성과 입자 크기 제어)

  • In this study, Iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (δ-FeOOH) was successfully synthesized using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as an oxidizing agent. The synthesis of δ-FeOOH was carried out by controlling the amount of H2O2, and pure δ-FeOOH was successfully synthesized in ranges from 0.2 mL to 0.6 mL of H2O2. The size of the synthesized δ-FeOOH particles was compared by controlling the amount of oxidant H2O2. The average particle size of the synthesized pure δ-FeOOH particles increased from 875.1 nm to 897.2 nm as the amount of H2O2 was increased. The optical properties of δ-FeOOH synthesized under these specific conditions were investigated. All δ-FeOOH showed a similar trend of increasing and decreasing light absorption from 800 nm to 400 nm, although there was a slight difference in the amount of light absorption, with the largest amount of light absorption at 410 nm. The band gap energy of δ-FeOOH through the Tauc plot method was about 2.1~2.2 eV when H2O2 was 0.2~1.4mL. With a sufficient small particle size, simple control of that particle size, and a small band gap energy enough to absorb light in the visible spectrum, δ-FeOOH could be useful in a variety of applications, including photoelectrochemistry and battery electrodes.

풀러린을 이용한 전자종이용 소자 최적구조 연구

  • This work was focused on the dielectrophoretic force of fullerenes dispersed in liquid crystal host medium, which are investigated in the homogeneously aligned liquid crystal (NLC) cells driven by external electric field. A fullerene of 10 wt% was doped into the LC medium and its electric field induced motion was controlled by both in-plane and vertical electric field. When the electric field was applied, the fullerene start to move in direction of applied electric field. The dark, grey and white states in the proposed device can be obtained by suitable combination of the polarity of applied electric field. The w and l are the width and distance between the electrodes. The reflectance at different l was measured and was found to be increased with increasing l. The dynamical motions of fullerene particles in LC medium suggest that fullerene can be designed for electronic-paper like displays.

Scavenging Properties of Atmospheric Carbon by Precipitation

  • In order to investigate the scavenging property of airborne carbonaceous particles by precipitations, rainwater, snow sample, and total suspended particulate matter (TSP) were collected at a heavily industrialized urban site. Elemental carbon (EC) contents of both rainwater and snow water were deter-mined using elemental analysis system. EC concentrations in rain samples varied from 33.6 to 166.6 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ with an average 47.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ . On the other hand, those of snow samples in three times snow events were ranged from 122.4 to 293.3 $\mu\textrm{g}$ L$^{-1}$ . As might be expected, EC showed the significantly high scavenging rate at the initial rainfall. The average total carbon (TC) scavenging rate by washout mechanisms was 57.6% for five rainfall events. The scavenging rate of EC gradually increased in proportion to the increasing rainfall intensity and rainfall amount.

Preparation of Spherical Monodispersed $ZrO_2$ Fine Powders by Metal Alkoxide Method (금속 알콕사이드법에 의한 구형의 단분산 $ZrO_2$ 미립자의 제조)

  • ZrO2 fine powders were prepared by hydrolysis, adding 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6mol/1H2O/ethanol to 0.1 mol/l Zr(OC3H7)4/ethanol. When hydrolized by adding 0.1mol/l Zr(OC3H7)4/ethanol to 0.1, 0.2mol/l H2O/ethanol., spherical monodispersed ZrO2 fine powders were obtained. And in this condition average sizes were about 0.5, 0.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, respectively. The more H2O/ethanol concentration increased, the more the particle size decreased and the particles were agglomerated strongly. Prepared powders were amorphous and hydrates. The calcined powders with 43$0^{\circ}C$ and 100$0^{\circ}C$ were showed tetragonal and monoclinic phase, respectively.

Removal of Nitrate and Particulate from Groundwater with Two stage Biofilter system (2단 생물막여과 탈질시스템에서 지하수의 질산성질소 및 입자제거특성)

  • Biological nitrate removal from groundwater was investigated in the biofilters packed with both gravel/sand and plastic media. Removal of particles and turbidity were also investigated in the 2-stage biofilter system consisted of biofilter and subsequent sand filter. In the single biofilter packed with gravel and sand, nitrate removal efficiency was dropped with the increase of filtration velocity and furthermore, nitrite concentration increased up to 3.2 mg-N/L at 60 m/day. Denitrification rate at the bottom layer below 25 cm was faster 8 times than upper layer in the up-flow biofilter. Nitrite build-up, due to the deficiency of organic electron donors, occurred at the upper layer of bed. Besides DO concentration and organic carbon, contact time in media was the main factor for nitrate removal in a biofilter. The most of the effluent particles from biofilter was in the range from 0.5 to $2.0{\mu}m$, which resulted in high turbidity of 1.8 NTU. However, sand filter followed by biofilter efficiently performed the removal of particles and turbidity, which could reduce the turbidity of final filtrate below 0.5 NTU. Influent nitrate was removed completely in the 2-stage biofilter and no nitrite was detected.
