The $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ and $\alpha$-$FeSi_2$ single crystals were synthesized by chemical vapour transport (CVT) using iodine as a transporting agent from the commercially available $FeSi_2$ powder. The $FeSi_2$ powder together with iodine were sealed in an evacuated quartz ampoule and the ampoule then being placed in two-zone electrical furnace for growing crystal. The CVT of $FeSi_2$ with iodine yielded $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ and $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$ single crystals at deposition temperature of 750 and $950^{\circ}C$ respectively. The source temperature was $1050^{\circ}C$ in both cases. The crystals of the $\alpha$-FeSi$_2$ phase were typically plate shaped with dimensions of about $10\times 10 \textrm{mm}^2$, whereas the crystals of orthorhombic $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ phase grew predominantly in the fonts of thin needle of about 10 mm in length. The composition of$\alpha$-FeSicrystal determined by electron probe microanalysis (EPMA) resulted in Si-rich $FeSi_{2.58}$ . 57. Furthermore, the CVT $\beta$-$FeSi_2$ crystal was found to be transformed to the high temperature $\alpha$-$FeSi_2$phase above $930^{\circ}C$.
Background: Bovine pericardium treated with glutaraldehyde(GA) is one of the most popular prosthetic materials. However, its late calcific degeneration after implantation results in early failure of the prosthesis. Therefore, we investigated the effects of combined treatment with sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and glutamate on calcific degeneration of GA treated bovine pericardium. Material and Method: Sixty square-shaped pieces of bovine pericardia were fixed in 0.625% GA solution with 4g/L MgCl2.6H2O as a control group (group 1). Sixty pieces pretreated with 1% SDS (group 2) and sixty pieces posttreated with 8% glutamate (group 3) were also fixed in the same GA solution. Sixty pieces pretreated with 1% SDS and posttrated with 8% glutamate were also fixed in the same GA solution (group 4). After 1 month of fixation, the pieces were implanted into the belly of sixty Sprague-Dawley rat subdermally and were extracted 1 month, 2 months and 3 months after the implantation. With an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, we measured the calcium amount deposited. Result: The calcium deposition in 1 month was 2.01$\pm$0.13 mg/g in group 1, 1.45$\pm$0.31 mg/g in group 2, 2.49$\pm$0.15 mg/g in group 3 and 0.75$\pm$0.27 mg/g in group 4. In 2 months, it was 3.57$\pm$0.15 mg/g in group 1, 0.98$\pm$0.30 mg/g in group 2, 3.46$\pm$0.12 mg/g in group 3, and 1.48$\pm$0.39 mg/g in group 4, and 5.45$\pm$0.42 mg/g in group 1, 2.43$\pm$0.53 mg/g in group 2, 4.20$\pm$0.55 mg/g in group 3, and 1.02$\pm$0.27 mg/g in group 4 in 3 months. The calcium depositions in group 2 and 4 were less than those of group 1 and 3 in 1 month 2, months, and 3 months(p<0.01). The calcium depositions in group 1, 2 and 3 increased with time. However, they remained unchanged in group 4, which was statistically significant(p<0.01). Conclusion: Pretreatment with SDS is effective in reducing calcification of GA treated bovine pericardium, and the combined method of pretreatment with SDS and posttreatment with glutamate was more effective than the other methods.
Biological Treatment of Wastewater Containing Chlorinated Phenols by a Mixed Culture. Lee, Wan-Seok1, Sang-Wook Jung, Chan-Sun Park, Byung-Dae Yoon, Jang-Eok Kim\ and Hee-Mock Oh*. Environmental Bioresources Laboratory, Korea Research Institute of Biosicence and Biotechnology, Taejon, Korea, 1 Department of Agricultural Chemistry, Kyungpool< National University, Taegu, Korea - The biodegradation of chlorinated phenols in an artificial wastewater was investigated using a mixed culture. The mixed culture was composed of 8 microorganisms isolated from the soil contaminated with various chlorinated phenols. Pseudomonas sp. BM as a main constituent of a mixed culture was Gram-negative, catalase- and oxidase-positive, and rod-shaped, and did not grow at 41°C. It degraded 99% of initial 500 mg!1 of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in the minimal salts medium as a sole source of carbon and energy within 3 days. The degradation efficiency of Pseu.domon.as sp. BM was not affected by the other organic carbon and nitrogen compounds. Pseudomonas sp. BM was able to grow in a broad range of pH 5 - 8, and degrade 2,000 mg/1 PCP. In the experiment with an artificial wastewater containing chlorinated phenols, the degradation efficiency of the mixed culture was the range of 73% (2,4-dichlorophenol) -96% (2-chlorophenol) during an incubation of 7 days. In a continuous culture experiment, the degradation efficiency of mixed culture plus activated sludge was about 2 times higher than that of the control containing only activated sludge. These results indicate that it is possible to apply the mixed culture to other wastewaters containing chlorinated phenols. Key words: Biodegradation, chlorinated phenols, pentachlorophenol, Pseudomonas sp. BM

This study investigates the site and architectural space of Byung-Su Jo's traditional house on Yongyu Island in Incheon. The house is located on a peaceful, warm site that is well protected by surrounding mountains, such as Hyunmubong to the rear, Jwacheongyong to the left, Wubackho to the right, and Ansan in front. The house was designed with an open layout with a sarangchae and anchae. There is a spring on the left side of the sarangchae, and a stream auspiciously flows from the west to the east in front of the sarangmadang. The house generally faces south, but to avoid pressure by the height of Ansan in the south direction, it is slightly turned to the east. There is a wide, rectangular pond that covers the pungsu weak point of the empty open view between the right and left mountains. The sarangchae space is composed of front 6 Gan and side 3 Gan. The anchae space is also composed of front 6 Gan and side 3 Gan,and it has a typical L-shaped anchae layout for the middle region of Korea. There is no shrine in the backyard, where yongmag is descending from hyunmubong, and a jangdokdae is installed to the west direction of the anbang due to narrow and slope backyard space.

The flat-headed goby, Luciogobius guttatus, inhabits tidepools and river mouths, and stays under stones on the dried bottom for the duration of the low tide. To know the relationship of its respiration and habit in this fish, the epidermis of five appendages was observed. The epidermis has three layers: the outermost layer, middle layer and stratum germinativum. The outermost layer is composed of polygonal cells or rather flattened cells, and mucous cells. The unicellular mucous cells showing acid mucopolysaccharides are 11.1 to $16.1{\mu}m$ in mean height and in one or two rows. The middle layer consists mainly of large epidermal cells that are swollen by adjacent epidermal cells and arranged in a web-shaped structure. The swollen cells are 12.3 to $15.2{\mu}m$ in mean height and arranged in one to 11 layers. Since the swollen cells occupy the entire height of the epidermis, the epidermis is thick. A large number of blood capillaries are present just below the stratum germinativum. Taste buds are distributed at intervals on the surface of the epidermis. Based on these epidermal strucures, it is likely that L. guttatus utilizes cutaneous respiration in a dual respiratory systems.
With the development of cardiac surgical technique, we need more prosthetic materials for repairing the intra- and extracardiac defects. Although bovine pericardial bioprosthesis treated with glutaraldehyde (GA) solution is one of the most popular materials, it has a drawback of later calcific degeneration. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of several materials and methods in reducing the calcific degeneration of bovine pericardium. Material and Method: Forty square-shaped pieces of bovine pericardia were fixed in 0.625% GA solution with 4 g/L MgCl$_2$ㆍ6$H_2O$ as a control group (group 1). Other 40 pieces pre-treated with 1 % SDS(group 2) and 40 pieces post-treated with 8% glutamate (group 3) and 2% chitosan (group 4) were also fixed in the same GA solution. Other 40 pieces pre-treated with 1% SDS and post-treated with 8% glutamate and 40 pieces post-treated with 2% chitosan were also fixed in the same GA solution (group 5, 6). The pericardial pieces were implanted into the belly of 40 Fisher 344 rats subdermally and were extracted 1 month, 2 months, 3 months, and 6 months after the implantation. With an atomic absorption spectrophotometry, we measured the calcium amount deposited and examined the tissue with microscope. Result: The calcium deposition in 1 month was less in group 2, 5, 6 than that in group 1 (p<0.05). It was most prominent in group 5 (p<0.01). This finding continued in 2 month. In 3 month, the calcium deposition was less in group 3 and 4 as well as group 2, 5, and 6 than in group 1. In 6 month, the calcium deposition in group 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 was less than that in group 1 and the difference was more than that of 1, 2, and 6 month. The microscopic calcium deposition was also less in group 2 and 5. Calcium deposition developed in the whole layer of pericardium, beginning with the surrounding the collagen fiber and progressing inwardly. Conclusion: Pre-treatment with SDS, post-treatment with glutamate or chitosan, and SDS pre-treatment and post-treatment with glutamate or chitosan were effective in reducing the calcium deposition in bovine pericardium. Moreover, the combined method of SDS pre-treatment and glutamate post-treatment was more effective than other methods.

The patterning of microbead in microfluidics channel is a practical technique for application in bio and medical areas. An approach is described for a direct patterning of magnetically active microbeads in microfluidic devices without inner structure. Local magnet arrangements - flat arrangement and stack arrangement - contacting same poles or opposite poles of magnet were utilized for generating trapping magnetic fields. The arrangement of magnets contacting same poles generated isolated patterns by repelling of magnetic field. The flat arrangement of vertically reverse magnet arrays shaped trapping patterns repelling magnetic field line between same poles. Spatially, the stack compositions of magnet arrangements allow diverse isolated trapped patterns of magnetic particles. Trapped magnetic particles in fluidic channels were stable on the $18m{\ell}/hr$ flow conditions and magnetic force of 1.08 mT in the all experiments. This experimental study suggests the simple and versatile methods to pattern magnetic particles, and has potential of wide application to bio and medical area.
The adult brown planthopper possesses tow oval shaped compound eyes which, on their ventral borders, curve around the base of the antennae. Compound eye of the adult brown planthopper is recognised apposition eye which each ommatidium is optically isolated from it surroundings, the rhabdoms receiving light only from their own corneal lens. Each ommatidium possesses its own dioptric apparatus formed from the cuticular cornea and an underlying crystalline cone. The retinula cells lying immediately beneath the crystalline cone have their individual rhabdomeres tightly opposed to form one central, closed rhbdom. The rhabdom stretches from the spex of the crystalline cone nearly to the basement membrane and is approximately 110~120 $\mu\textrm{m}$ in length. The crystalline cone is surrounded by a pair of primary pigment cells an these in turn are surrounded by accessory pigment cells. Accessory pigment cells extend beyond the crystalline cone surrounding the retinular cells in the distal region of the eye. The crystalline cone is surrounded by the distal-most regions of the retinula cells show the presence of seven cells and sections taken proximally in the last quarter of the omatidium before the basement membrane is reached, reveal the presence of a small, eighth retinula cell which also contributes to the central rhabdom. Each ommatidium has a central rhabdom formed from the modified inner border of all of the retinula cells. Th rhabdom consists of micrvilli arising from the inner wall of each retinula cell. In cross section th microvilli exhibit a characteristic honeycomb appearance. Pigment cells comprise the primary pigment cells enveloping the crystalline cone, the accessory pigment cells extending from the inner surface of the comea to the basement membrane and the small pigment cells of the basement membrane.

Trihalomethane removal efficiency by a fixed bed carbon adsorber was a subject of this study. Along with laboratory scale column operations, a simple adsorption model was developed to predict removal efficiency. The adsorption model includes an overall mass transfer coefficient, K and Freundlich adsorption constants, $K_F$ and n. Simulation results showed that increasing K and $K_F$ or decreasing n would take more loading and prolong run time of the adsorption bed. Typical S-shaped breakthrough curves were obtained from the experiments. The operational results at $20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ indicated that a moderate difference in water temperature would not affect the treatment efficiency significantly. The adsorption constants determined from the column operation and the model simulation were reasonably close to those obtained from the isotherm test. It may be concluded that trihalomethane can be removed successfully by a fixed bed carbon adsorber.
Objectives: To determine the standards for discrimination of Magnoliae Cortex, the experiment of specific external-internal characters and the physicochemical pattern analysis were performed. Methods: External characteristics was observed using a stereoscope. Paraffin-mediated sectioned materials were stained by Ju's method. Physicochemical patterns of materials were analyzed using HPLC. Results: 1. Botanical characteristics: Magnolia officinalis had one seed and a white flower, while M. obovata had two seeds and a white flower. Machilus thunbergii had berry and spherical fruits and yellowish green panicles. 2. External characteristics: M. officinalis and M obovata were dark and thick. M. officinalis was gray brown and greasy while M. obovata was light-gray, less oily and smoothly sectioned. Machilus thunbergii was thin and relatively light or yellow-brown, coarsely sectioned and faintly specific scents. 3. Internal characteristics: The bast parts of M. officinalis and M. obovata were commonly wider than Machilus thunbergii The cork cortex of M. officinalis was $10{\sim}mg/L$ cell layers with many oil cells, while that of M. obovata was $4{\sim}7$ cell layers with less oil cells. Machilus thunbergii's xylem which consisted of ring-shaped cambium at 1st and 2nd part was occupied in large portion. 4. Physicochemical pattern: Both M. officinalis and M. obovata involved honokiol and magnolol. All kinds of M. officinalis involved Magnatriol B but one kind of M. ovobata and all of Machilus thunbergii didn't. Machilus thunbergii showed different pattern of chromatogram from that of 2 species above. Conclusions: These results could be used as standards for discrimination of Magnoliae Cortex and as the method of objectification in medicinal herbs giving the basic resource for bioactivity research.
