  • Ethanol fermentation of glucose by a strain of Saccharomyces cereuisiae was studied in membrane recycle bioreactor, where the fermentation vessel was coupled with cross flow hollow fiber membrane. The cell recycle system controlled backflushing with fresh medium was proven to be effective in alleviating membrane fouling and allowing long term operation of high-cell continuous fermentation. Using 100 g/l initial glucose concentration, the maximum productivity of about 9 5 g/$l \cdot h$ has been achieved at dilution rate 2.5 $h^{-1}$ and bleed stream ratio 0.05 with the corresponding ethanol concentration of 35g/l and glucose conversion of 100%. Increasing the glucose concentration to 200 g/$l \cdot h$ resulted in an increase in ethanol concentration to 48 g/l and productivity to 120 g1l.h. Substrate conversion, however, was only 69%. This productivity was the highest value in the study, and about 38 fold more than that of batch culture and 17 fold more that of single stage continuous culture without cell recycling. No further increase in the productivity was obtained when the glucose concentration was increased reased to 300g/l.

  • Glycidol-poly(lactide) (Gly-PLA) were synthesized via L-lactide ring opening polymerization with glycidol as an initiator and $Al(O-i-Pr)_3$ catalyst. The structure of Gly-PLA was analyzed and successfully confirmed by 1H NMR. The OH group of glycidol in Gly-PLA was absent according to the $^1H$ NMR analysis, indicating that the terminal OH group of glycidol successfully served as an initiator in the L-lactide polymerization. The solution and bulk polymerizations of L-lactide with glycidol were performed to examine the effect of L-lactide/glycidol molar ratio, polymerization temperature and time on the molecular characteristics of Gly-PLA. The conversion and molecular weight increased with an increase in L-lactide/glycidol molar ratio. Gly-PLA showed the bimodal type DSC curve. The low $T_m$ peak of low molecular weight reduced but the high $T_m$ peak of high molecular weight increased as L-lactide/glycidol molar ratio increased.

  • The influences of pH were investigated for anaerobic hydrogen gas production under the constant pH condition ranged from pH 3 to 10. Carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas were main components of the gas but methane was not detected in the produced gas when sucrose was added in enrichment medium. When the modified Gompartz equation was applied for the statistical analysis of experimental data, a hydrogen production potential and maximum gas production rate at pH 5 were 1,182 mL and 112.46 mL/g dry wt biomass/hr. The hydrogen conversion ratio was 22.56%. The butyrate/acetate ratios at pH 5 and pH 6 are 1.63 and 0.38. Higher butyrate/acetate ratio produced more hydrogen gas generation. The Haldane equation model was used to find the optimum pH and fitted well with the experimental data$(r^2=0.98)$. The optimum pH and specific hydrogen production were 5.5 and 119.61 mL/g VSS/h.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of mixed rearing of male and female chickens on the stress response in Korean native chickens. To identify the degree of the stress response, heterophil-lymphocyte ratio (H/L ratio), heat shock protein genes (HSPs) expression, and intracellular nuclear DNA damage rate were analyzed before and after the mixed rearing of male and female chickens. The results showed that the H/L ratio of chickens after mixing males and females was more than thrice as higher than before mixing (P<0.001), but the differences between males and females were not significant. HSP-70, HSP90-α, and HSP90-β expression levels were 2.5 to 3.4 times higher after mixing male and female chickens, compared to before mixing (P<0.01). In the mixed rearing of male and female chickens, the increase in HSPs expression in females was higher than in males. Comet indicators in intracellular DNA damage rate analysis showed a significant increase after mixing male and female chickens compared to before mixing (P<0.001). However, there was no significant difference between males and females with respect to DNA damage rate. Taken together, these results suggest that male and female mixed rearing acts as a strong external stressor in both male and female chickens.

  • Contact-type linear image sensors for facsimile have been fabricated by means of rf glow discharge decomposition method of silane. The dependence of their electrical and optical properties on rf power, $SiH_4$ flow rate, ambient gas pressure, $H_2SiH_4$ ratio and substrate temperature are described. The a-Si:H monolayer demonstriated photosensitivity of 0.85 and $I_{ph}/I_d$ ratio of 100 unger 100 lux illumination. However, this monolayer has relatively high dark current due to carrier injection from both electrodes, resulting in low $I_{ph}/I_{dd}$ ratio. To suppress the dark current we have fabricated $SiO_2/i-a-Si:H/p-a-Si:H:B$ multilayer film with blocking structure. The photocurrent of this multilayer sensor with 6 V bias became saturated ar about 20nA under 10 lux illumination, while the dark current was less than 0.2 nA. Moreover, the spectral sensitivity of the multilayer film was enhanced for short wavelength visible region, compared with that of the a-Si:H monolayer. These results show that the fabricated photocon-ductive film can be used as the linear image sensor of the facsimile.

  • This paper investigates the feasibility of applying the jet loop reactor for the neutralization of alkaline wastewater using carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). In this study, pH changes and $CO_2$ removal characteristics were examined by changing influent flow rate of alkaline wastewater (initial pH=10.1) and influent $CO_2$ flow rates. Influent flow rates of alkaline wastewater ($Q_{L,in}$) ranged between 0.9 and 6.6 L/min, and inlet gas flow rate ($Q_{G,in}$) of 1 and 6 L/min in a lab-scale continuous flow jet loop reactor. The outlet pH of wastewater was maintained at 7.2 when the ratio ($Q_{L,in}/Q_{G,in}$) of $Q_{L,in}$ and $Q_{G,in}$ was 1.1. However, the $CO_2$ removal efficiency and the outlet pH of wastewater were increased when $Q_{L,in}/Q_{G,in}$ ratio was higher than 1.1. Throughout the experiments, the maximum $CO_2$ removal efficiency and the outlet pH of wastewater were 98.06% and 8.43 at the condition when $Q_{G,in}$ and $Q_{L,in}$ were 2 L/min and 4 L/min, respectively.

  • Direct laser melting(DLM) is promising as a joining method for producing parts for automobiles, aerospace, marine and medical applications. An advantageous characteristic of DLM is that it affects the parent metal very little. The mechanical properties of parts made by DLM are strongly affected by the porosity and surface roughness of the laser melted beads. This is a systematic study of the effects of the porosity and surface roughness of laser melted beads using various processing parameters, such as laser power, scan rate and overlapping ratio of the fill spacing. The specimens were fabricated with 316L and 304L austenitic stainless steel powder. Dense parts with low porosity were obtained at low laser scan speed, as it increased the aspect ratio of the parental material and the depth of penetration. The variations of surface roughness were examined at various processing parameters such as overlapping ratio and laser power.

  • This study was performed to evaluate initial pH and substrate concentration on hydrogen fermentation of protein. The optimum initial pH and substrate concentration of hydrogen fermentation using protein was 8.0 and 1.0 g peptone/L, respectively. The maximum hydrogen yield at initial pH 8.0 and 1.0 g peptone/L was $19.2{\pm}0.8mL\;H_2/g$ peptone. As results of VFAs analysis, percentages of valerate was similar to hydrogen yield. Also, C. stickalandii, which was hydrogen and valerate producing bacteria, was dominated.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of different mixing ratios of Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus subtilis in diets on nutrient digestibility, fecal microflora, and odor gas emissions of growing pigs. A total of four crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) barrows with average body weight (BW) of 41.2 ± 0.7 kg were randomly allotted four diets over four periods in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Treatments were as follows: Control (CON, basal diet), CON + 0.2% probiotic complex (L4S6, B. licheniformis and B. subtilis at a 4:6 ratio), CON + 0.2% probiotic complex (L5S5, B. licheniformis and B. subtilis at a 5:5 ratio), CON + 0.2% probiotic complex (L6S4, B. licheniformis and B. subtilis at a 6:4 ratio). Dietary probiotic supplementation showed higher crude protein (CP) digestibility values and lower Escherichia coli counts in fecal samples than the CON group (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference in NH3 or H2S emission until day 3. The positive effect of H2S and NH3 emissions was detected earlier with the L4S6 and L5S5 compared to the L6S4, which had a lower ratio of B. subtilis. Both the L4S6 and L5S5 probiotic complexes significantly decreased the fecal H2S and NH3 emission in days 4 and 6 (p < 0.05). On day 7, all probiotic complexes decreased (p < 0.05) H2S and NH3 emissions than the CON group. Our results agreed that the dietary supplementation of Bacillus licheniformis and Bacillus subtilis complexes in growing pigs can significantly improve CP digestibility and reduce fecal E. coli counts, NH3 and H2S emissions. Notably, the higher mixing ratio of Bacillus subtilis in probiotic supplementation is more effective in reducing the odor of manure.
