A Study on the Treatment of Wastewater Containing Surfactants (계면활성제를 함유한 폐수의 효율적 처리 방법에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of wastewater treatment containing surfactant. For that, comparative analysis of effectiveness of Featon Oxidation, Aluminum Sulfate, PAC (Poly Aluminum Chloride) on the treatment of the synthetic wastewater containing LAS (Linear Alkyl Sulfate), a main component of the commercial detergent was carried. Then, the optimum pH, the dosage of reagents, and the concentration of the LAS in each treatment were determined. The results of the study were summarized as following. 1. In Fenton Oxidation, optimal pH was 3 and 97.92% removal of LAS was achieved. However, the increase of the pH reduced the efficiency of LAS removal. The proper chemical dosages of FeSO$_4$ and $H_2O_2$ were 300 mg/l and the increase of dosages didn't affected the removal efficiency. Therefore, it was concluded that the economic chemical dosage was 300 mg/l of FeSO$_4$ and $H_2O_2$. 2. In case of Alum treatment, optimal pH was 11 with 61.13% removal efficiency. At other pH range, the removal efficiency was very low indicating that removal efficiency is greatly influenced by pH. The proper chemical dosage was 200 mg/l with the removal efficiency of 77.65%. The increase of chemical dosage, however, reduced the removal efficiency. 3. In case of using PAC, optimal pH was 6 with 97.99% removal efficiency. The result showed that wastewaters containing surfactant were almost completely removed at pH 6 by PAC. Removal efficiency was decreased by increasing PAC dosage higher than 400 mg/l and dosage over 700 mg/l of PAC abolished the treatment. 4. The comparative analysis of three methods revealed that the effective pH ranges were at pH 2-5 with Fenton oxidation, at pH 6-11 with PAC, and pH 11 with Alum. The removal efficiencies at these pH were 83.95-97.92%, 75.98-97.99% and 61.13%, respectively. 5. Increase in LAS concentration reduced the removal efficiencies of all three methods. In the case of PAC or Alum treatment, treatment abolished at LAS concentration higher than 700 mg/l.

  • The followings are the results of study about morphological variation of mussel, Mytilus coruscus collected respectively from Sanyang-myeon Tongyeong-goon Gyeongnam on 13th January, Yeonwha-do Yokji-myeon Tongyeong-goon Gyeongnam on 15th May and down below the Yeong-do Bridge Busan on 20th August, 1964. The biggest mussel of the above three areas have been from Yeong-do Bridge, whose shell height is 164.1 mm, shell length 77.8mm, shell breadth 52.2mm, total weight 291,9g and shell length is as follows : from Yeong-do Bridge L=0.4954H + 1.9516, from Sanyang-myeon L=0.3718H + 14.145, from Yeonwha-do L=0.4074H + 9,6610 The relationship between shell height and shell breadth is as follows : from Yeong-do Bridge B=0.3426H + 0.2052, from Sanyang-myeon B=0.3084H + 3.6183, from Yeonwha-do B=0.3507H + 0.8028 In view of the above relationship, it is concluded that the slope value of mussel, nearer to the inshore from the off-sea, is similar to that of M. edulis, from which are can presume that M. coruscus could be changed in shell form according to its environment. Effect of Culture Conditions on the Growth Characteristics and Survival of Bifidobacterium breve (Bifidobacterium breve의 성장 특성과 생존력에 미치는 배양조건의 영향)

  • The effects of pH and L-cysteine HCI on the growth and stability of Biofidobacterium breve were studied. Significantly higher population was obtained by culturing at pH $6.0{\sim}6.5$ than at any other pH. The cultures that had been grown at pH $5.5{\sim}6.0$ were more stable during storage than those grown at other pH. The number of B. breve that had been grown at pH 5.5 and 6.0 remained as $2.4{\times}10^6ml/\;and\;1.4{\times}10^6ml,$ respectively, after 25 days of storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity of B. breve grown at pH 5.5 and 6.0 was reduced only to $78{\sim}85%$ of the control after the same storage condition, whereas the culture grown at pH 7.0 exhibited a signficant decline in population and ${\beta}$-galactosidase activity during $4^{\circ}C$. The growth of B. breve was promoted by 0.05% L-cysteine HCI, and cells grown in MRS with $0.05{\sim}0.10%$ L-cysteine HCI were more resistant to hydrogen peroxide. With respect to the effect to the effect of osmoprotectants on the survival of B. breve subjected to freeze-drying, addition of 2 mM betaine of 2 mM trehalose increased the growth rate of cells grown under osmotic stress and also made the organism more osmotolerant. Furthermore, the betaine or trehalose increased the survivability of the cells after freeze-drying.

  • Effect of concentrations of wheat flour and glucose on the sponge fermentation of soda cracker by the mixed lactic acid bacteria of L. brevis, L. fermentum and L. plantarum was investigated. When glucose was added to the wheat flour solution, pH was higher and TTA (total titrable acid) was lower as compared with the medium without glucose. This results suggested that glucose in the solution stimulate cell growth but inhibit the production of organic acids. With increasing of wheat flour concentration, pH decreased and TTA increased during the sponge fermentation of soda cracker.

Study on Growth Characteristics of Lactobacillus Isolated from Broiler Cecum (육계 맹장 유산균의 성장특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was investigated to observe Lactobacillus spp. population of poultry digestive organ, duodenum, ilium, cecum and colon by growing steps and to select of valuable lactobacilli as probiotics. Two strains of male broiler commercial chickens, Hybrid and Ross, were used to evaluate population of Lactobacillus spp. in intestinal tracts. Three strains of Lactobacillus were identified, and bile salts environment. The number of lactovacilli was the lowest in duodenum compared to other intestinal tracts which had similar population. Population of Lactobacillus was maintained constantly regardless growing steps after one week of age. Identification of Lactobacillus from cecum resulted in L.reuteri BC5, L. crispatus BC7, L.reuteri BC9. All strains was depressed in pH 1 and 2, although two strains could survive for one hour at pH 2. And they could survive at pH 4 for 4hours. In bile salts tolerance, L.reuteri BC5, L.crispatus BC7 were maintained for 2 hours, but the growth reduced from 2hours. Growth of L.reuteri BC9 was increased continuously. In conclusion, Lactobacillus of intestinal tracts were established at first week, and maintained constant population. They were influenced on severe acidic condition and bile salts. Cecal Lactobacillus has different growth charcteristics by strains.

  • This paper presents a GA for service restoration in electric power distribution systems. The aim of the service restoration is to restore service with maximizing the amount of total load restored while minimizing the number of required switch operation when a fault or overload occurs in distribution system. This paper develops GA for service restoration problem with constrained multi-objective optimization problem. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method for solving the problem.

Quantitative analysis of Spirulina platensis growth with CO2 mixed aeration

  • The growth characteristics of Spirulina platensis were investigated using four photo-bioreactors with $CO_2$-mixed air flows. Each reactor was operated under a specific condition: 3% $CO_2$ at 50 mL/min, 3% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min, 6% $CO_2$ at 50 mL/min, and 6% CO2 at 150 mL/min. The 3% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min condition produced the highest algal growth rate, while the 6% $CO_2$ at 150 mL/min conditioned produced the lowest. The algal growth performance was suitably assessed by the linear growth curve rather than the exponential growth. The medium pH decreased from 9.5 to 8.7-8.8 (3% $CO_2$) and 8.4-8.5 (6% $CO_2$), of which trends were predicted only by the pH-carbonate equilibrium and the reaction kinetics between dissolved $CO_2$ and $HCO_3{^-}$. Based on the stoichiometry between the nutrient amounts and cell elements, it was predicted that depleted nitrogen (N) at the early stage of the cultivation would reduce the algal growth rates due to nutrient starvation. In this study, use of the photobioreactors capable of good light energy distribution, proper ranges of $CO_2$ in bubbles and medium pH facilitated production of high amounts of algal biomass despite N limitation.

Layout of Long-pass-edge Filter Correspond with the Optical Transmission in Crystalline (수정체 광투과에 대응하는 LPE Filter 설계)

  • The optical absorption and transmittance of cow' crystalline were measured by spectrophotometer in the 200~800nm wavelength regions. The optical absorptions of crystalline composed of a high absorption band in the UV-A, UV-B, and appeared the light transmittance edge in the 400nm wavelength region, and completely transmitted without the absorption in the high wavelength regions than 400nm. Also, the optical absorption and transmittance had no temperature dependence. The optical transmittance spectrum of crystalline concord with the thin film structure of $n_0/(0.5H)L(LH)^6(0.5H)/n_s$ and $n_0{\mid}(0.5LH0.5L)^kL/1.25{\mid}4.0$ of long-pass edge filter form. In the artificial crystalline and inter lens layout, long-pass edge filter layout can UV cut off.

Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) Production in Fermentation of Enzymatically Hydrolyzed Cassava Flour by Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 and Solvent Separation

  • Cassava constitutes an abundant substrate in tropical regions. The production of butanol in ABE fermentation by Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 using cassava flour (CF) was scaled-up to bioreactor level (5 L). Optimized fermentation conditions were applied; that is, $40^{\circ}C$, 60 g/l CF, and enzymatic pretreatment of the substrate. The batch fermentation profile presented an acidogenic phase for the first 24 h and a solventogenic phase afterwards. An average of 37.01 g/l ABE was produced after 83 h, with a productivity of 0.446 g/l/h. Butanol production was 25.71 g/l with a productivity of 0.310 g/l/h, high or similar to analogous batch processes described for other substrates. Solvent separation by different combinations of fractioned and azeotropic distillation and liquid-liquid separation were assessed to evaluate energetic and economic costs in downstream processing. Results suggest that the use of cassava as a substrate in ABE fermentation could be a cost-effective way of producing butanol in tropical regions.

Bacillus sp. WS-42에 의한$\beta$-Mannanase 생산배지의 최적화

  • A strain of Bacillus sp. WS-14 was isolated from soil. Medium optimization for ${\beta}-mannanase$ production by Bacillus sp. WS-14 was performed. Effect of various carbon sources on ${\beta}-mannanase$ production was investigated and locust bean gum was the most effective for ${\beta}-mannanase$ production. ${\beta}-mannanase$ activity and cell growth increased with increasing the concentration of locust bean gum, however, the amounts were not significant. Among nitrogen sources, soytone was the most effective for ${\beta}-mannanase$ production. Inorganic compounds such as $KH_2PO_4,\;NaCl\;Na_2CO_3\;and\;MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;on\;{\beta}-mannanase$ production were optimized for ${\beta}-mannanase$ production. Locust bean gum of 10.0 g/l, soytone of 5.0 g/l, $KH_2PO_4$ of 2.0 g/l, NaCl of 10.0 g/l, $MgSO_4{\cdot}7H_2O\;of\;0.2\;g/l,\;Na_2CO_3$, of 2.0 g/l were selected as optimum content. Production of ${\beta}-mannanase$ by using the optimum medium was carried out. The maximum ${\beta}-mannanase$ activity of 20.8 unit/ml could be obtained after 14 h fermentation which corresponed to the productivity of ${\beta}-mannanase$ of 1.48 unit/ml-h.
