Identification of Genomic Differences between Hanwoo and Holstein Breeds Using the Illumina Bovine SNP50 BeadChip

  • The use of genomic information in genomic selection programs for dairy and beef cattle breeds has become a reality in recent years. In this investigation, we analyzed single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for Hanwoo (n=50) and Holstein (n=50) breeds using the Illumina Bovine SNP50 BeadChip to facilitate genomic selection and utilization of the Hanwoo breed in Korea. Analysis of the entire genomes showed different spectra of SNP frequencies for Hanwoo and Holstein cattle. The study revealed a highly significant (p<0.001) difference between Hanwoo and Holstein cattle in minor allele frequency (MAF). The average MAFs were $0.19{\pm}0.16$ and $0.22{\pm}0.16$ for Hanwoo and Holstein, respectively. From the total of 52,337 SNPs that were successfully identified, about 72% and 79% were polymorphic in Hanwoos and Holsteins, respectively. Polymorphic and fixed SNPs were not distributed uniformly across the chromosomes within breeds or between the two breeds. The number of fixed SNPs on all chromosomes was higher in Hanwoo cattle, reflecting the genetic uniqueness of the Hanwoo breed. In general, the rate of polymorphisms detected in these two breeds suggests that the SNPs can be used for different applications, such as whole-genome association and comparative genetic studies, and are a helpful tool in developing breed identification genetic markers.

  • Objectives: This study was intended to examine the seasonal differences in outdoor activity times and dietary vitamin D intakes, and explicates their relative impact on improving serum 25-(OH) vitamin D status among Korean young women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 135 free-living women aged 19-39 years in Daegu-Kyungbook, Korea. We compared the results from 52 women for the summer and 83 women for the winter. Dietary intake of vitamin D was assessed by 24 hour recall method for non-consecutive three days as well as by food frequency method. Daily outdoor activity times were derived from 24 hour physical activity diary. Results: The average dietary intake of vitamin D of the participants by 24 hour recall method was 3.1 ${\mu}g$ during the summer, 3.3 ${\mu}g$ during the winter, showing no significant difference between the two seasons. Times spent on outdoor activities (p < 0.01) in the summer (= $23.8{\pm}23.6$ min) were much longer than that in the winter (= $10.8{\pm}13.4$ min). The serum 25-(OH) vitamin D levels of participants were $17.5{\pm}7.5$ ng/mL in the summer and $13.4{\pm}4.3$ ng/mL in the winter, showing that the latter was significantly lower than that of the former (p<0.001). The serum 25-(OH) vitamin D levels of subjects were positively related to outdoor activities (r=0.315, p<0.05) during the summer, while related to dietary intake (r=0.252, p<0.05) during the winter. Conclusions: In order to improve the current vitamin D status of Korean young women, nutrition education programs should focus on increasing more dietary intake especially during the winter, and performing more outdoor activities in other seasons.

대학생의 환경의식 태도에 따른 사회적지지 추구와 의류제품 소비행동 (Social Support Pursuit and Apparel Consumption Behavior by the Environment Awareness Attitudes of University Students)

  • The purpose of this study is to classify the environmental awareness attitudes of university students and analyze their differences in social support pursuit, and apparel consumption behavior. Questionnaires were administered to 236 college students living in Daegu City and Kyoungbuk province. Frequency, factor analysis, reliability analysis, cluster analysis, ANOVA, Duncan-test, and t-test were used for data analysis. The findings were as follows. The environmental awareness attitudes had factors as recognizing the importance of environmental issues, purchase of eco-friendly products, public opinion legislation awareness, interests on eco-friendly product, and eco-friendly practice. Social support pursuit were found as marginal people support pursuit, emotional support pursuit, informational support pursuit, and problem-solving support pursuit. Apparel consumption behavior were found as planned purchase, social participation attitude, clothes recycling, life practice, low-price orientation, emphasis on designs, clothing-life practice, and consciousness over others. The environmental awareness attitudes of university students were classified into four groups of Consumers of Environment-Awareness, Consumers of Environment-interests, Consumers of Environment-practice, and Consumers of Low Environment-awareness. The groups showed significant difference in social support pursuit, and apparel consumption behavior. Gender of university students showed significant differences the environmental awareness attitudes, social support pursuit, and apparel consumption behavior. It is meaningful to find out the significant relationship in a social context between environment recognition and social support pursuit related by friends. This study also offered a basic information related to social support pursuit by the types of university students' environmental awareness attitude and consumption on clothing, which is necessary for environmental education and green consuming behavior.

This research was investigated by color slide ratings and questionnaire survey to the students who are majoring in Landscape architecture in three universities locating at Taegu area. Two research sites have similarities in many ways but have differences in campus land form and design type such as ''''Closed'''' and ''''Open'''' types. Major results were summarised as follows ; 1. As a result of the slide test, the high degree of visual preference was shown in the campus that is ''''Closed'''' type. However the degree of perceived safety was lower than that of in Youngnam Univ. campus. 2. According to the result of the comparative analysis between user''''s perceived safety and visual preferences in each campus, the degree of perceived safety at ''''Closed'''' type was lower than that of ''''Open'''' type, but the degree of visual satisfactioni was higher at ''''Closed'''' type. 3. The factors affecting visual preference in campus were shown as density of wood, land form, and diverse type of the spaces. On the other hand, the factors affecting perceived safety were ''''enclosed space by wood'''' at the day time, and ''''the condition of lighting'''' at night. 4. Regarding gender differences in sensation of each space variables, female users showed higher satisfactio on the scenic beauty. 5. Regression analysis showed that general satisfation was determined by the variables such as ''''arrangement'''', familiarity'''', ''''cleanness'''', and ''''closed feeling'''', in Kyungbook Univ. And in Youngnam Univ. , the variables were ''''texture'''', ''''perceived beauty'''', ''''cleanness'''', and ''''complexity'''' respectively. 6. In conclusion, campus users wanted the outdoor spaces that have various land form and somewhat ''''open-closed'''' mixture type, which has a good ''''Edge Effect'''' to satisfy both aspects in safety and visual preferneces.

  • The 2.5GeV linac of the Pohang Light Source(PLS) is planed to be converted to a XFEL. The PAL XFEL requires a new 1.2-GeV linac that will be combined to the existing linac to increase a beam energy upto 3.7GeV. This stability is mainly determined by a low level RF drive system and klystron-modulators. The stability level of the modulator has to be improved 10 times better to meet the pulse stability of 0.02 %. The regulation methods such as traditional de-Qing and precision inverter charging technology are reviewed to find out suitable upgrade scheme of the modulators. In order to obtain electron beam of the consequently stability for XFEL linac, the pulse-to-pulse beam voltage regulation is less than +/-0.5%. To get the reliable stability of the modulator which is less than +/-0.2%, a charging section is improved in a modulator which has been operated with inverter power supply and de-Q'ing.

편광방식 스테레오 모니터링 시스템의 원격조작성 평가 (Evaluation of Remote Handling Performance with the Polarized Stereo Monitoring System)

  • 본 논문에서는 개발된 편광방식 스테레오 모니터링(KAERI-PSM) 시스템의 성능을 평가하기 위해 6 D.O.F의 퓨마 로보트를 이용한 원격조작 실험을 수행하였다. 카메라의 관측각도를 달리하는 3가지 원격조작실험은 6명의 실험자가 힘반향 조이스틱을 사용하여 로보트 암을 (1) 직접 (2) 일반 모니터 (3) 동기방식 스테레오 영상 모니터 및 (4) 개발된 편광방식 스테레오 영상 모니터를 통하여 보면서 6가지의 조합된 방법으로 총 36번 수행하여 걸린 평균 시간과 평균 에러 발생 수를 비교하는 것이다. 실험 결과 스테레오 영상 모니터를 사용한 원격작업은 일반 모니터를 이용했을 때 보다 훨씬 짧은 시간에 정확히 수행할 수 있었으며, 물체 이동에 대한 카메라의 각도가 실험의 주요한 변수가 됨을 알 수 있었다. 또한 동기방식과 편광방식의 비교에서 속도와 정확도 면에서는 두 방식이 비슷했으나 눈의 피로도로 인한 작업의 안정성 측면에서는 편광방식이 우수함을 알 수 있었다.

SOx 가스감지용 SAW 가스 센서 개발 (Development of SAW Gas Sensor for Monitoring SOx Gas)

  • SOx 가스를 고감도로 감지할 수 있는 SAW 가스 센서를 개발하였다. 이는 SAW device 위에 SOx 가스에 감응하는 재료를 박막으로 증착함으로써 고감도의 마이크로 센서형으로 한 것이다. SOx 감응 재료로서 CdS를 선정하였으며, 이를 SAW device 위에 박막화하기 위해 초음파 분무 노즐을 이용한 분무 열분해의 박막 증착공정을 응용하였다. 초음파 분무 노즐을 통하여 생성된 균일하고 미세한 입자들은 기판위에서 안정한 열분해 환경을 조성함으로써 센서 감응막을 위한 넓은 표면적의 박막을 증착 시켰는데 기판의 온도는 $300^{\circ}C$ 내외에서 최소 50 nm수준의 결정립의 박막을 얻었다. 이렇게 하여 얻은 SAW 가스 센서는 $SO_{2}$ 가스에 감응하였으며 재현성도 보였다. 다른 가스의 존재하에서 $SO_{2}$ 가스에 대한 선택성에 관하여는 계속적인 연구가 필요하다.

  • In order to solve the shortage of roughage supply for dairy farm in Korea, winter cereal forage production after harvesting of rice in the fallow paddy field was studied. Two parts are already reported at the previous paper - One was the model development of the mechanized production, and the other was the study of feasibility of the model and its desirable direction in Korea. In this study, the model system is applied for a winter cereal wrap silage production model to practice in Kyungbook National University farm on 3ha scale for 3 years. Results of the research are summarized as follows; It takes 2 or 3 working days to process the wrap silage in middle of May in Daegu region. Also, not much particular problem can be found during the application test of mechanized wrap silage production. Field capacity and field efficiency are estimated to be 0.6-0.85㏊/h and 50-70% in mowing, 1.1∼1.7㏊/h and 52∼80% in tedding and raking, 0.6∼1.1㏊/h and 25∼45% in baling and 0.5∼0.57㏊/h and 75∼85% in wraping, respectively. Total production cost is estimated to be 1,257won/kg-TDN in oversowing and wrap-silage harvest in 1.6㏊ working area. As a result, large scale field is recommended to produce the wrap silage in order to maximize the field capacity.

Salt fog에 의한 오손된 EPDM애자의 누설전류 파형 분석 (Analysis on Waveform of Leakage Current of Contaminated EPDM Insulators by Salt Fog)

  • This paper presents the results of power spectra using the fundamental and low frequency harmonic components of leakage current waveform to study aging on contaminated EPDM insulator(was serviced during 1997-2001, region Pohang, korea) under salt fog conditions. Experiments have been conducted in the chamber salt fog and at the 16KVrms. The salt contents adjusted as 0g,25g,50g and 75g per liter of deionized water. The onset of dry-band arcing on polymer insulators could be determined by signal processing the low frequency harmonics components. A correlation has been found between the fundamental and low harmonic components of power spectra on leakage current. Where aging could be associated with an increase in the level of both the fundamental and low frequency harmonics components of leakage current. Surface aging for contaminated EPDM insulators occurred when the fundamental component of leakage current was greater then some level On the other hand, when the polymer insulator approached failure, the fundamental component of leakage current reached relatively high values and low frequency harmonics components of the leakage current trended to decrease. The results suggest that both the fundamental and low frequency harmonics of leakage current can be used as a tool to determine both the beginning of aging and before flashover, end of life EPBM insulator in salt fog.
