A computer code has been developed for the computation of the viscous flow around a ship model with the free surface. In this code, the incompressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are solved numerically by a finite difference method which employes second-order finite differences for the spatial discretization and a four-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the temporal integration of the governing equations. For the turbulence closure, a modified version of the Baldwin-Lomax model is exploited. The location of the free surface is determined by solving the equation of the kinematic free-surface condition using the Lax-Wendroff scheme and the boundary-fitted grid is generated at each time step so that one of the grid surfaces always coincides with the free surface. An inviscid approximation of the dynamic free-surface boundary condition is applied as the boundary conditions for the velocity and pressure on the free surface. To validate the computational method and the computer code developed in the present study, the numerical computations are carried out for both Wigley parabolic hull and Series 60 $C_B=0.6$ ship model and the computational results are compared with the experimental data.
This paper introduces modeling and solution for the dynamics of pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow in natural gas pipeline. Without of bypass flow, the dynamic behavior of the PIG depends on the different pressure between the rear and nose parts, which is generated by injected gas flow behind the tail of the PIG and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. With bypass flow, the PIG dynamics also depends on the amount of bypass flow across its body. The mathematical model are derived for unsteady compressible flow of the PIG driving and expelled gas, and for dynamics of the PIG. The bypass flow is assumed to be incompressible with the condition of its Mach number smaller than 0.45. The method of characteristic (MOC) and the Runge-Kutta method are used to solve the system governing equations. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show that the derived mathematical model and the proposed solution are effective for estimation the dynamics of the PIG with and without bypass flow under given operational condition.
In PWR three-dimensional transient coupling calculation software CORCA-K, the nodal Green's function method and diagonal implicit Runge Kutta method are used to solve the spatiotemporal neutron dynamic diffusion equation, and the single-phase closed channel model and one-dimensional cylindrical heat conduction transient model are used to calculate the coolant temperature and fuel temperature. The LMW, NEACRP and PWR MOX/UO2 benchmarks and FangJiaShan (FJS) nuclear power plant (NPP) transient control rod move cases are used to verify the CORCA-K. The effects of burnup, fuel effective temperature and ejection rate on the control rod ejection process of PWR are analyzed. The conclusions are as follows: (1) core relative power and fuel Doppler temperature are in good agreement with the results of benchmark and ADPRES, and the deviation between with the reference results is within 3.0% in LMW and NEACRP benchmarks; 2) the variation trend of FJS NPP core transient parameters is consistent with the results of SMART and ADPRES. And the core relative power is in better agreement with the SMART when weighting coefficient is 0.7. Compared with SMART, the maximum deviation is -5.08% in the rod ejection condition and while -5.09% in the control rod complex movement condition.
The present work is concerned with heat and mass transfer of an electrically conducting second grade MHD fluid past a semi-infinite stretching sheet with convective surface heat flux. The analysis accounts for thermophoresis and thermal radiation. A similarity transformations is used to reduce the governing equations into a dimensionless form. The local similarity equations are derived and solved using Nachtsheim-Swigert shooting iteration technique together with Runge-Kutta sixth order integration scheme. Results for various flow characteristics are presented through graphs and tables delineating the effect of various parameters characterizing the flow. Our analysis explores that the rate of heat transfer enhances with increasing the values of the surface convection parameter. Also the fluid velocity and temperature in the boundary layer region rise significantly for increasing the values of thermal radiation parameter.
Wind-induced and earthquake-induced excitations on tall structures can be effectively controlled by Tuned Liquid Damper (TLD). This work presents a numerical simulation procedure to study the performance of tuned liquid tank- structure system through ${\sigma}$-transformation based fluid-structure coupled solver. For this, a 'C' based computational code is developed. Structural equations are coupled with fluid equations in order to achieve the transfer of sloshing forces to structure for damping. Structural equations are solved by fourth order Runge-Kutta method while fluid equations are solved using finite difference based sigma transformed algorithm. Code is validated with previously published results. The minimum displacement of structure is observed when the resonance condition of the coupled system is satisfied through proper tuning of TLD. Since real-time excitations are random in nature, the performance study of TLD under random excitation is also carried out in which the Bretschneider spectrum is used to generate the random input wave.
The flows in an axial flow turbomachine are calculated numerically in the two sets of flow surfaces of H-S and B-B surfaces assuming that the flow is axisymmetric. The calculation is performed by regarding the governing equations as the quasi-Poisson's equations and using the finite element method for the flow regions divided into triangular elements. The results of numerical calculation agree comparatively well with the experimental results and it has been found that the distribution of an axial velocity component at the rotor exit is not necessarily uniform under the influences of the inlet guide vanes and the front shape of the hub even if the rotor is designed by the free-vortex theory. Also it has been found that the existence of the optimum value of the blade number can be estimated from the results of calculation of deviation angles at rotor exit if we consider the viscous flow-loss, and that the flows of B-B surfaces are affected very sensitively by the degree of satisfaction of Kutta condition.

Aerodynamic analysis of NACA wings moving with a constant speed over guideways are performed using an indirect boundary element method (potential-based panel method). An integral equation is obtained by applying Green's theorem on all surfaces of the fluid domain. The surfaces over the wing and the guideways are discretized as rectangular panel elements. Constant strength singularities are distributed over the panel elements. The viscous shear layer behind the wing is represented by constant strength dipoles. The unknown strengths of potentials are determined by inverting the aerodynamic influence coefficient matrices constructed by using the no penetration conditions on the surfaces and the Kutta condition at the trailing edge of the wing. The aerodynamic characteristics for the wings flying over nonplanar ground surfaces are investigated for several ground heights.
The locus of a camshaft supported on camshaft bearings has been investigated using transient method. Forces applied to camshaft are composed of two components, one is transfer force between cam and tappet, the other is frictional force. These forces have been calculated using lumped mass model and EHL theory. ADI method has been used for numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As the result of analysis, it is found that camshaft bearings exist in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.
The camshaft locus at camshaft beating in a direct acting OHC valve train system has been investigated using the transient method. Forces applied to the camsfiaft are composed of two components, one is the transfer force between the cam and the tappet, the other is the frictional force. These forces have been calculated using the lumped mass model and the elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory. The alternating direction implicit method has been used for the numerical analysis of Reynolds equation, and 4th order Runge-Kutta method has been used for the transient journal locus analysis. The effects of various load conditions are presented in the form of journal locus. As a result of the analysis, it has been found that camshaft bearings were mainly in the hydrodynamic lubrication condition.
In this paper, incompressible two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved for the study of steady laminar flow around a body with the wall effect. A second-order finite difference method is used for the spatial discretization on the nonstaggered grid system and the 4-stage Runge-Kutta scheme for the numerical integration in time. The pressure field is obtained by solving the pressure-Poisson equation with the Neumann boundary condition. To investigate the wall effect, numerical computations are carried out for the NACA 0012 section at the various blockage ratios. The pressure and skin friction on the foil surface, velocity pronto in its wake and drag coefficient are investigated as functions of the blockage ratio.
