  • This study aims at the development of a technique for the optimal water allocation by applying Dynamic Programming Model for the effective usage and rational allocation of water resources, in case of which limited water resources in river basin should be used in several stages. In analytical procedure the possible allocable area was firstly zoned into the four areas: Pohang area ($C_1$), Yeungcheon area ($C_2$), Gyeungsan area ($C_3$), Daegu area ($C_4$), which are located between the Yeongcheon dam and the confluence of the lower Kumho river and the main course of the Nakdong river. Secondly, a return function was determined on the basis of the correlation between the GRP in each area and the amount of water used to it. A DP Model, finally, was applied to the allocation of the water resources according to both their usage and the areas. As a result, the fact has been found that when allocating by the area, $C_1$ could be possibly supplied only with the water resources avaiable from the Yeungchon dam, and the maximum units supplied to $C_1$ should be 240 units ($1unit=10^3㎥$ per day), beyond which we ought to develop an alternative water resources. Also, the return from the allocation by the usage exceeded the one from it by the area. At the same time it was more profitable to limit the water supply to $C_1$ into 217 units. In the allocation by the area 240 units and 80 units, if only the water resources available from the Yeungcheon dam used, and 360 units and 80 units if the Doil dam used additionally, could be supplied to $C_1$ and the lower region respectively. In the allocation by the usage 103 units for industrial water with 33 units for both domestic and commercial water and 183 units, if only the water resources available from the Yeungcheon dam used, and 103 units with 33 units and 304 units, if the Doil dam taken into consideration additionally, could be supplied to $C_1$ and the lower region respectively. Therefore, much more water could be allocated to the region of lower Kumho river if the method of water allocation by the usage.

  • Taegu is notorious as hot and dry summer among Korea cities. One of the most important goals of the open space planning is to ameliorate urban climate of the city. The objective of this research is to evaluate the thermal mitigation effect of the cool islands in Taegu metropolitan city. Cool islands of this paper includes parks and rivers surrounded by or adjacent to urbanized areas. Based on the analysis of the thermal band of Landsat TM at May 17, 1997, the thermal mitigation effect of open spaces in the city could be summarized as follows ; Kumho river showed the largest mitigation effect in terms of the width of mitigation zone and temperature difference. Evaporation from wide water surface and evapo-transpiration from riparian grass land could bring into results. Significant mitigation effect of parks covered with forest can be observed. The temperature range of such parks were between 19.05$^{\circ}C$ and 19.44$^{\circ}C$ However, the thermal mitigation effect of Dalsung park and Apsan park was insignificant. The small size and high percentage of hard paving of the former and the relative low density of the residential areas adjacent to the latter could be the main reason. In conclusion, the thermal mitigation effect in urban ope spaces could be detectedby the employment of thermal band data of Landsat TM and GIS buffering technique.

  • A bacterium which is resistant to both mercury and cadmium, and also capable of utilizing phenol as a carbon and energy source, was isolated from the Kumho River sediments near Kangchang Bridge, Taegu, Korea. The isolate was labeled Pseudomonas sp. KM10 and characterized. The bacteria grew in 4 mM $CdCl_2$and in $70{\mu}M$ $HgCl_2$. The bacteria efficiently removed over 90% of 1 g/l phenol within 30 h. In the presence of 1.250 g/l phenol, the growth of the microorganism was slightly retarded and the microorganism could not tolerate 1.5 g/l phenol. Curing of plasmid from the bacteria was carried out to generate a plasmidless strain. Subsequent experiments localized the genes for phenol degradation in plasmid and the genes for mercury resistance and cadmium resistance on the chromosome. Dot hybridization and Southern hybridization under low stringent conditions were performed to identify the DNA homology. These results showed significant homologies between the some sequence of the chromosome of Pseudomonas sp. KM10 and merR of Shigella flexneri R 100, and between the some sequence of the chromosome of Pseudomonas sp. KM10 and cadA of Staphylococcus aureus pI258. The mechanism of cadmium resistance was efflux, similar to that of S. aureus pI258 cadA, and the mechanism of mercury resistance was volatilization, similar to that of S. flexneri R100 mer.

  • The purpose of the study is to understand the ecological characteristics of the early stage of community formation of epilithic diatoms. The samples were daily collected from a site of the Kumho River during 70 days from October 13 to December 21 in 2002. Total 126 diatom taxa collected in the study were classified into 114 species and 12 varieties belonging to 26 genera. About 80% of the taxa collected from the artificial substrata during the whole studying period were observed until tenth day from the start time of the study. In the study the successional process of the diatom community was divided into the three stages of the early, the middle and the later by cluster analysis based on the similarities in species composition among the communities. Cocconeis placentula Ehrenb. and C. placentula var. lineata (Ehrenb.) V.H., horizontally positioned species, would be divided into the early successional species, and Diatoma vulgre Bory, vertically positioned species, was the later successional species. Cell densities and species composition of the diatoms on the artificial substrata were closely similar to them of natural substrata after 40th day from the start time of the study.

  • The weakness of current water quality monitoring system was reviewed to manage Nakdong river's water quality. The current monitoring system has sampling periods lasting for a week to 10 days, but these-SAMpling periods may not accurately measure the real level of water quality. Therefore, daily sampling and analysis of water samples for nine factors was performed from May 1st 2011 to Sep. 30st 2011 to check the water quality changes at three-SAMpling points, Munsanri (the upper side of Kangjung-Koryung weir), Kangchang (the outlet of the Kumho River) and Samunjin (the lower side of Kangjung-Koryung weir). As demonstrated by the results, concentrations of all nine factors dramatically changed on a daily basis, so daily sampling and analysis of water quality samples may be needed instead of weekly sampling and analysis of water quality samples to ensure the proper management of the Nakdong River's water quality. However, daily observations for all water sampling points are not possible because costs and labors are limited, so that new methods which could support the current monitoring system should be developed.

  • The purpose of this research was to develop a model that minimizes time and money for deriving topographical property factors and hydro-meteorological property factors, which are used in interpreting flood flow, and that makes it possible to forecast rainfall-runoff using a least number of factors. That is, the research aimed at suggesting a runoff interpretation method that considers the river branching characteristics but not the topographical and geological properties and the land cover conditions, which had been referred in general. The subject basin of the research was the basin of Yeongcheon Dam located in the upper reaches of the Kumho River. The parameters of the model were derived from the results of abstracting topological properties out of rainfall-runoff observation data about heavy rains and Digital Elevation Modeling(DEM). According to the result of examining calculated peak runoff, the Clark Model and the GIUH Model showed relative errors of 1.9~23.9% and 0.8~11.3%, respectively and as a whole, the peak values of hydrograph appeared high. In addition, according to the result of examining the time when peak runoff took place, the relative errors of the Clark Model and the GIUH Model were 0.5~1 and 0~1 hour respectively, and as a whole, peak flood time calculated by the GIUH Model appeared later than that calculated by the traditional Clark Model.

  • On the subject of river bed water in Seomjin river, it had accomplished the verifying experiment of membrane filtration pilot plant for evaluating the applicability of its process throughout the prediction of membrane fouling as a function of the pore size of membrane and the determination of optimum coagulant dosage. On the result of the experiment for the evaluation of the membrane fouling as a function of the pore size, a increasing rate of irreversible resistance of membrane pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ and $0.01{\mu}m$ was measured each $0.44{\times}10^{12}/m^2$ and $0.42{\times}10^{12}/m^2$, respectively. And on the result of Flux-test, it showed that the optimum coagulant dosage was measured lower than the it of the Jar-test. The result to be operated in a condition of a permeate flux $1.0{\sim}1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}day$ without coagulation and a permeate flux $1.0{\sim}2.0m^3/m^2{\cdot}day$ with coagulation was maintained at stable trans-membrane pressure (TMP) value for 6 months up to. Therefore it showed that the stable operation without the coagulation was possible on permeate flux $1.0{\sim}1.5m^3/m^2{\cdot}day$ in the operation of membrane filtration process.

  • The safety of levee that depends on the river flood elevation has been regarded as very important keys to build up various flood prevention systems. However, deterministic methods for computation of water surface profile cannot reflect the effect of possible inaccuracies in the input parameters. The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology of uncertainty computation of design flood level based on steady flow analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. This study addresses the uncertainty of water surface elevation by Manning's coefficients, design discharges, river cross sections and boundary condition. Monte Carlo simulation with the variations of these parameters is performed to quantify the variations of water surface elevations in a river. The proposed model has been applied to the Kumho-river. The reliability analysis was performed within 38.5 km (95 sections) reach considered the variations of the above-mentioned parameters. Overtopping risks were evaluated by comparing the elevations of the flood condition with the those of the levees. The results show that there is a necessity which will raise the levee elevation between 1 cm and 56 cm at 7 sections. The model can be used for preparing flood risk maps, flood forecasting systems and establishing flood disaster mitigation plans as well as complement of conventional levee design.

  • The present study was performed to investigate biodegradation rate of BPMC(2-sec-butylphenyl methyl carbamate) and chlorothalonil. In the biodegradation test of two pesticides by the modified river die-away method from June 17 to August 22, 1998, the biodegradation rate constants and half-life were determined in Nakdong(A) and Kumho River(B). Bio- degradation rate of BPMC was 27% in A sampling point, 40% in B sampling point after 7 days. Biodegradation rate constants and half-life of BPMC were 0.0460 and 15.1 days in A sampling point, 0.0749 and 9.3 days in B sampling point, respectively. Biodegradation rate of chlorothalonil was 100% in A and B sampling points after 7 days. Biodegradation rate constants and half-life of chlorothalonil were 0.1416 and 4.9 hours in A sampling point, 0.1803 and 3.8 hours in B sampling point, respectively. Biodegradation rate of chlorothalonil was faster than that of BPMC. Correlation analysis between biodegradation rate constants of pesticides and water quality(DO, BOD, SS, ABS, $NH_3-N\;and\;NO_3-N$) showed significant correlation with BOD, SS and $NH_3-N$. Furthermore, regression analysis with BOD, SS and $NH_3-N$ as independent variable and biodegradation rate constant as independent variable showed a significant linear equation. These results suggested that BPMC and chlorothalonil were mainly degraded by biodegradation, and the difference in biodegradation of two pesticides was due to difference of water quality.
