This research was investigate to understand how moderate bilingual subjects represent the lexicon in second language. Although most researches have focused only on high proficient bilinguals, we analysed how moderate bilinguals who have learned English mostly in school represent the prototype of verb and its inflected form of verb. Results of lexical decision task showed that moderate bilingual subjects used different mental representation depending on whether the verb have regular or irregular conjugation. With regular verbs, the identification of an inflected form was affected by both the frequency of its prototype and that of inflected form, but with irregular verbs, it is affected only by the frequency of inflected form.
This study examines the voice onset times (VOTs) of Korean stops produced by Korean learners of English with high language proficiency and long L2 exposure (i.e., Korean-English bilinguals) to assess whether the VOTs of their lax and aspirated stops are merging and, if so, which types of stops are being changed. Thirteen Korean speakers (six female and seven male) who had studied in the USA for more than three to ten years participated. The results show that the speakers in this study with long L2 exposure are participating in the VOT merger, in which VOTs for aspirated stops are reduced while those for lax stops are increased. In other words, change in VOT affects not only aspirated stops but also lax stops. The results indicate that L1 phonetic drift may not be primarily affected by the amount of L2 exposure, and language contact may not be the primary factor triggering a sound change in the Korean stop system. Further study is necessary focusing on the phonetic shift of the "lax" category because it may play a pivotal role in a tonogenetic-like sound change in present-day Korean.

The present study was aimed to compare the semantic systems represented by the lexicon between L1 and L2 in late Korean-English bilinguals. The participants performed the word-picture matching task. the task was to decide whether the pictures represent the previously presented words' meaning. The words were the basic level categories. The stimuli were consisted of common object belonged to two different semantic categories (natural and artificial). To control the translation strategies, the SOA were manipulated as 650ms(Exp. 1) and 250ms(Exp. 2). No translation effort was found in the comparison of the two experiments. In both experiment, the RTs were faster in L1 rendition, and it took longer to decide the stimuli in natural categories than with artificial ones in L1. However, this category effect was not observed in L2. The results showed the differences in the organization of semantic representations in the brain through the bilinguals' two languages. While L1 semantic knowledge might be more systematically organized, that of L2 seems to be less well organized, at least by late bilinguals who participated in the present study.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of postvocalic voicing(Contrasting voiceless fricative and affricate with voiced fricative and affricate) on vowel duration. In particular we focused on the durational differences between vowels followed by voiceless and voiced consonants across three groups of speakers: English speakers, English bilinguals and Korean learners of English. the result of experimental I showed that durations of vowels preceding voiced fricative and affricates as well as voiced stops are significantly longer than those preceding voiceless counterparts. Experiment Ⅱ indicated that as the subjects exposed themselves longer to English speaking society, their pronunciation was increasingly similar to those of English native speakers.
This research was conducted to investigate the priming effect in Korean and English word production by Korean speakers. Picture-naming with distractors was used as experimental task. The type of target language, the type of distractor language and SOA(Stimulus Onset Asynchrony) were used as variables. Cross-linguistic priming effect and within-linguistic priming effect were mesured to investigate bilinguals' conceptual system.
The purpose of this study was aimed to compare the lexical access and representation of semantic system in the bilinguals. The participants(late Korean-English bilinguals) performed the word-picture matching task. The task was to decide whether the pictures presented after the words(basic-level categories) represent the Korean(L1) or English(L2) words' meaning or not. The stimuli were consisted of common object belonged to four different categories(animal, part of body, clothes, tool). To control the translation strategies, the SOA(stimulus onset asynchrony) were manipulated as 650ms(Exp. 1) and 200ms(Exp. 2). In both experiment, the RTs were faster in L1 condition. The decision time of the part of body categories were shorter than the animal in L1 condition. In L2 condition, clothes were responded faster than the tools. The differences of the lexical access time implied that the bilingual semantic system seemed to be structured by more sub-level categories than the super-level, living or non-living things, and the ways to access the bilingual lexicon might be differentiated according to the languages.

This is a semantic pilot study which concentrates on how people in Taiwan process the temporal metaphors, ego-moving metaphor and time-moving metaphor. Motivated by the research of Gentner, Imai, and Boroditsky (2002) in which the English native speakers comprehend ego-moving metaphors faster than time-moving metaphors, the present study attempts to reexamine whether the faster reaction to ego-moving metaphors is shared by both the Chinese native speakers and EFL learners. To achieve the goals, 25 Chinese/English bilinguals are invited to be examined via the16 Chinese and 16 English test sentences. The recordings of their accuracy on each item are served as the databases used to compare with the study of Gentner, Imai, and Boroditsky (2002). The two finding presented here are: (1) when the subjects tested in their native language, Chinese, they process ego-moving metaphors better. (2) when tested in the foreign language, English, they conceptualize time-moving metaphors much better.
Functional MRI technique was used in this study for examining the language switching mechanisms between the first language (L1) and the second language (L2). Language switching mechanism is regarded as a complex task that involves an interaction between L1 and L2. The aim of study is to find out the brain activation patterns during the phonological process of reading real English words and English words written in Korean characters in a bilingual person. Korean-English bilingual subjects were examined while they covertly read four types of words native Korean words, Korean words of a foreign origin, English words written in Korean characters, and English words. The fMRI results reveal that the left hemispheric language-related regions at the brain, such as the left inferior frontal, superior temporal, and parietal cortices, have a greater response to the presentation of English words written in Korean characters than for the other types of words, in addition, a slight difference was observed in the occipital-temporal lobe. These results suggest that a change in the brain circuitry underlying the relational processes of language switching is mainly associated with general executive processing system in the left prefrontal cortex rather than with a similarity-based processing system in the occipital-temporal lobes.
This study aims to investigate whether the misalignment between syllable and word onsets due to the process of resyllabification affects Korean-English late bilinguals perceiving English continuous speech. Two word-spotting experiments were conducted. In Experiment 1, misalignment conditions (resyllabified conditions) were created by adding CVC contexts at the beginning of vowel-initial words and alignment conditions (non-resyllabified conditions) were made by putting the same CVC contexts at the beginning of consonant-initial words. The results of Experiment 1 showed that detections of targets in alignment conditions were faster and more correct than in misalignment conditions. Experiment 2 was conducted in order to avoid any possibilities that the results of Experiment 1 were due to consonant-initial words being easier to recognize than vowel-initial words. For this reason, all the experimental stimuli of Experiment 2 were vowel-initial words preceded by CVC contexts or CV contexts. Experiment 2 also showed misalignment cost when recognizing words in resyllabified conditions. These results indicate that Korean listeners are influenced by misalignment between syllable and word onsets triggered by a resyllabification process when recognizing words in English connected speech.
