  • In order to investigate the seasonal variation of watermass and fishery creatures in the adjacent sea of Naro Island, an oceanographic observation was carried out seasonally on the fishing grounds, and the sales performance data of the fisheries cooperative's joint market of Naro Island was examined by using a principal component analysis. The temperature and salinity ranged from 8.1 $^{\circ}C$ to 13.7 $^{\circ}C$ and from 33.1 psu to 34.3 psu in spring, from 14.5 $^{\circ}C$ to 24.2 $^{\circ}C$ and from 30.5 psu to 34.1 psu in summer, from 14.8 $^{\circ}C$ to 18.6 $^{\circ}C$ and from 30.1 psu to 34.0 psu in autumn, and from 4.3 $^{\circ}C$ to 10.1 $^{\circ}C$ and from 33.1 psu to 34.9 psu in winter, respectively. In winter and spring, the offshore water spread out to all sea areas of all water layers. In summer, the mixed waters covered the entire sea surface whereas the mixed water and offshore water covered the bottom. In autumn, the coastal water and mixed water appeared on the surface, but the mixed water was distributed widely on the bottom and the offshore water began to appear in the open sea. For two years from 2002 to 2003, 58 fishery creature species in total were sold in the fisheries cooperative's joint market of Naro Island. In general, the total of 50% fish were sold, and crustacea and mollusc by each 25%. Medium shrimp, whiparm octopus, blue crab, and octopus predominated. A number of species and biomass of fishery creatures were sold mostly in April and May, while they were sold the least in January and February. The seasonal sales results showed that mullet, angler, short necked clam, large shrimp, and webfoot octopus were sold mainly in spring, tonguefish, flathead, pomfret, glass eel, blue crab, whiparm octopus, and squid were sold mainly in summer, and octopus, medium shrimp, and spanish mackerel were sold mainly in autumn.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the possible utilization of 5 different animal protein sources in juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Meat and bone meal (MBM), feather meal (FM), squid liver powder (SLP), poultry by-product(PBP) and blood meal (BM) were chosen to be the candidate for the possible ingredients for the dietary fish meal replacer in rainbow trout feed. Six different diets were formulated of isonitrogenous and isocaloric basis of $48\textperthousand$ crude protein and 16.7 kJ/g diet: diet 1, $100\textperthousand$ white fish meal (WFM); diet w, $80\textperthousand$ WFM +20% MBM; diet 3, 80% WFM +20% FM; diet 4, 80% WFM+20% SLP; diet 5, 80% SFM+20% PBP; diet 6, 80% WFM +20% BM. As the dietary protein sources, each diet containing 34.7% of animal protein were supplied by WFM with and without MBM, FM, SLP, PBP or BM and approximately 64.2% of plant protein. After one week of conditioning period, fish averaging 2g were divided into six groups and fed one of the experimental diets for 8 weeks. After eight weeks of feeding trials, there were no significant differences in weight gain and feed conversion ratio among groups of fish fed diet 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6(P>0.05). However, weight gain of fish fed diet 2 were significantly lower than those of fish fed diet 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6(P<0.05). These results indicated that FM, SLP, PBP and BM can be used as a dietary fish meal replacer up to 20% in juvenile rainbow trout.

  • Purpose: This study investigates dental health and chewing ability of patients hospitalized in geriatric hospital, and compares the chewing ability for each factor that can be used as data for dental healthcare of senior citizens and basic data for denture insurance for the elderly. Methods: The 101 subjects of this study were selected from 178 patients hospitalized in a geriatric hospital located in Daegu Metropolitan City, excluding 77 patients who were being treated in the intensive care unit and who were unable to communicate. The chewing ability of the patients were measured using an evaluation scale based on foods consisting of 10 different hardnesses. Results: Patients with less than 21 teeth, those with dentures and patients who were less than satisfied with their dental conditions had difficulties in chewing hard food such as dried squid and radish kimchi, and the Chewing ability increased proportionally to the number of remaining teeth(p<0.001), appropriateness of the maxillary and mandibular dentures(p<0.005) and the level of dental satisfaction(p<0.001). Conclusion: This study is limited as the subjects were selected from a single hospital and the authors estimate that various studies will be necessary to investigate the Chewing ability of patients hospitalized in long-term hospitals. The subjects of this study did not receive any dental treatment while staying in the hospital and many of the subjects had bad fit denture or didn't have dentures or did not use dentures, although they have dentures, which calls for denture construction and prosthetics through dental treatment.

  • Physical and biological environmental variations in the East Sea were investigated by analysing time-series of oceanographic data and meteorological indices. From 1971 to 2000, dominant periodicity in water temperature variations had two apparent periods of 3 to 4 years and of decades, especially in the southwestern part of the East Sea affected by the influence of inflowing Tsushima warm current. Fluctuating water temperature within a certain period appears to respond to El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events with a time lag. It was found that there was a strong correlation between water temperature and El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events with a time lag of 1.5 and 5.5 years for periods of 3 to 6 years and of decades, respectively. Corresponding with El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$ events, water temperature variability also showed strong correlation with shift and/or changes in biological and chemical environments of nutrient concentrations, zooplankton biomass, and fisheries. However, there also occurred a short-term periodicity of water temperature variations. Within a period of 1 to 4 years, a relatively short-term cycle of water temperature variation had strong correlation with other climate indices such as Pacific Decadal Oscillation and monsoon index. After comparing coherence and phase spectrum between water temperature and different climate indices, we found that there was a shift of coherent periods to another climate index during the years when climate regime shift was reported.

  • During a study to discover indigenous prokaryotic species in Korea in 2016, a total of 42 actinobacterial isolates were recovered from various environmental samples collected from natural cave, squid, sewage, sea water, trees, droppings of birds, freshwater, eelgrass, mud flat, sediment and soil. On the basis of a tight phylogenetic clade with the closest species and high level of 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity, it was shown that each isolate was assigned to independent and previously described bacterial species which were assigned to the phylum Actinobacteria. The following 42 species have not been reported in Korea: eight species in two genera n the order Corynebacteriales, 26 species of 16 genera in the Micrococcales, one species of one genus in the Micromonosporales, one species of one genus in the Propionibacteriales, four species of two genera in the Streptomycetales and two species of two genera in the Streptosporangiale. Cell morphology, Gram staining reaction, colony colors and features, the media and conditions of incubation, physiological and biochemical characteristics, origins of isolation and strain IDs of 42 unrecorded actinobacterial species are presented in the species description.

  • The present study dealt with the isolation, identification and enzyme characterization of potential luminous bacteria from water, sediment, squid, and cuttle fish samples of the Karaikal coast, Bay of Bengal, India during the study period September 2007 - August 2008. Bioluminescent strains were screened in SWC agar and identified using biochemical tests. As Shewanella henadai was found to be the most common and abundant species with maximum light emission [69,702,240 photons per second (pps)], the optimum ranges of various physicochemical parameters that enhance the luciferase activity in Shewanella hanedai were worked out. The maximum luciferase activity was observed at the temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ (69,674,387 pps), pH of 8.0 (70,523,671 pps), salinity of 20 ppt (71,674,387 pps), incubation period of 16 h (69,895,714 pps), 4% peptone (70,895,152 pps) as nitrogen source, 0.9% glycerol (71,625,196 pps), and the ionic supplements of 0.3% $CaCO_3$ (73,991,591 pps), 0.3% $K_2HPO_4$ (73,919,915 pps), and 0.2% $MgSO_4$ (72,161,155 pps). Shewanella hanedai was cultured at optimum ranges for luciferase enzyme characterization. From the centrifuged supernatant, the proteins were precipitated with 60% ammonium sulfate, dialyzed, and purified using anion-exchange chromatography, and then luciferase was eluted with 500 mM phosphate of pH 7.0. The purified luciferase enzyme was subjected to SDS-PAGE and the molecular mass was determined as 78 kDa.

  • Magnetocardiography(MCG) has been proposed as a novel and non-invasive diagnostic tool for the detection of cardiac electrical abnormality associated with myocardial ischemia. In our previous study, we have proposed a new classification method of MCG parameters, based on the different populations of the parameters between coronary artery disease(CAD) patients, symptomatic patients and healthy volunteers. We used four parameters, representing the directional changes of the electrical activity in the period of an R-ST-T interval. In patients with chest pain and without ST-segment elevation, who were selected consecutively from all patients admitted to the hospital in 2004, the patients with CAD could be classified with a higher sensitivity than conventional methods, showing that the proposed method can be useful for the diagnosis of CAD with MCG. In this study, we examined the validity of the algorithm with the prior probability distribution in diagnosis of new patients admitted to the hospital in 2005. In the results, presence of CAD could be found with sensitivity and specificity of 81.3% and 71.4%, respectively, in patients with chest pain and non-diagnostic ECG findings.

  • Magnetocardiography (MCG) is a non-contact, non-invasive, and harmless diagnostic tool to detect the abnormal electrical conductivities of the heart caused by the various coronary artery disease or cardiac muscular disease. The purpose of this study is to identify whether MCG signals and MCG parameter values vary depending on the location of sensor assembly. It will be an important reference for the standard measurement. Four healthy male subjects (33.3$\pm$6.3 years) participated in this study. Basal recording was made at 20 mm apart from the chest surface. All subjects were requested to take a regular breathe while MCG was taken. The gap between the chest surface and the bottom of the sensor assembly was 20, 40, 60, and 80 mm. Recording was made using 64 channel MCG system (Axial type, first order gradiometer) developed by Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS). After resting for two minutes in a supine position on the bed in magnetically shielded room, MCG were recorded for 30 s. As the sensor location is getting away from the chest surface signal, the amplitude of R and T wave peak decreases to 70% (at 40 mm gap), 50% (at 60 mm), and 37% (at 80 mm) of the reference strength measured (y = $1.3903e^{-0.0169x}$, $R^2$ = 0.99; where y=amplitude remained after reduction, x=distance between chest surface and sensor location). The regression equations may be used as a good reference to calculate how much strength will be decreased by the distance. In MCG parameters, most values of parameters were decreased as the gap was increased. As an example, the current moment at T-wave peak reduced to 52% (at 40 mm gap), 33% (at 60 mm), and 19% (at 80 mm). However, the difference caused by the gap could be reduced by considering the distance when the MCG parameters were calculated. The study results can be used as a useful reference to design the baseline and the sensor location.
