  • One hundred and one noxious weeds on cultivated land of Taiwan were investigated for the occurrence of "Kranz" leaf anatomy and activities of PEP carboxylase and $C_4$ acid decarboxylating enzymes : NADP-malic enzyme, NAD-malic enzyme, PEP carboxykinase. Based on the leaf anatomy and a/b chlorophyll ratio, twenty-seven species exhibit "Kranz" type leaf anatomy, and seventy-four species were found without it. Among the species investigated, Digitaria radicosa (Presl) Miq., Leptochloa chinensis (L.) Nees, and Sporobolus fertilis (Steud.) W. D. Clayton in the Gramineae were first recorded as $C_4$ plants. Twenty-sven species of "Kranz" type leaf anatomy, include those of monocotyledon ; sixteen species in Gramineae, six species in Cyperaceae. Those of dicotyledon ; two species each in Euphorbiaceae and Amaranthaceae and one species in Portulacaceae. The subtype of fourteen previously uninvestigated species among twenty-seven species were further determined. The properties of the three decarboxylating enzyme from representative species were also characterized.

  • Background: Due to the rapidly changing climatic conditions, South Korea faces the grand challenge of exotic species. With the increasing human movement, the influx of alien species to novel regions is prevalent across the globe. The latest research suggests that it is easy to prevent the introduction and establishment of alien species rather than controlling their spread and eradication. Like other countries, the Korean Ministry of Environment released a list (in 2018) of 45 potential risky exotic fish species considered likely to be invasive candidate fish species if they ever succeed in entering the Korean aquatic ecosystems. Results: The investigation into the invasion suitability traits showed that potential risky fish species could utilize those features in becoming invasive once they arrive in the Korean aquatic ecosystems. If the novel species establish viable populations, they are likely to incur higher economic costs, damage the native aquatic fauna and flora, and jeopardize the already perilled species. Furthermore, they can damage the installed infrastructure, decline overall abundance and biodiversity, and disturb the ecosystem services. Here we reviewed the list of fish species concerning their family, native origin, preferred aquatic biomes, main food items, current status in Korea, and potential threats to humans and the ecosystems. Data shows that most species are either already designated as invasive in the neighboring counties, including Japan, Vietnam, Thailand, and China, or originate from these countries. Such species have a higher climate match with the Korean territories. Conclusions: Therefore, it is exceptionally essential to study their most critical features and take regulatory measures to restrict their entry. The incoming fish species must be screened before letting them in the country in the future. The regulatory authorities must highlight the threatening traits of such species and strictly monitor their entrance. Detailed research is required to explore the other species, especially targeting the neighboring countries fish biodiversity, having demonstrated invasive features and matching the Korean climate.

  • More than five hundreds of yeast species (including 9 variants) encompassing 142 genera and 48 classes of 2 phyla exist in Korea. However, only 173 species have been cataloged in the National Species List of Korea (NSLK), the backbone reference to claim sovereign rights over biological resources, as of December 2021, due to the lack of taxonomic descriptions, although some of these species are extensively used in industry. The present pilot study investigated the taxonomy of strains belonging to the six most widely used or frequently isolated yeast species (Meyeromyma guilliermondii, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Saccharomycopsis fibuligera, Wickerhamomyces anomalus, Candida tropicalis, and Papiliotrema flavescens) to include these species in the NSLK. Strains with diverse habitats and geographic origins were retrieved from the National Institute of Biological Resources culture collection. These strains clustered in the same clade as the type strains of the designated species according to phylogenetic analysis of the D1/D2 sequences. Moreover, we described the cell morphology and physiological characteristics of representative strains of each species. This study suggests that these six species are indigenous to Korea and can be accordingly listed in the NSLK.

  • The present study was performed to examine the community structure of benthic macroinvertebrates in the provincial park of Mt. Daedun and its nearby region. Sampling was conducted two times in May.June and October.November, 2000. Main two areas are Mt. Anpyong (470.0m) and Mt. Daedun (877.0m) area. Total taxa of benthic macroinvertebrates were 111 species, 47 families, 15 orders, 6 classes in 4 phyla. Aquatic insects were composed of 29 species in ephemeroptera, 10 species in odonata, 7 species in plecoptera, 2 species in hemiptera, 2 species in megaloptera, 23 species trichuptera, 6 species in coleoptera and 17 species in diptera. Other non-insects were composed of 1 species in platyhelminthes, 8 species in gastropoda, 2 species in oligochaeta, 3 species in hirudinea and 1 species in crustacea. Ephemeroptera, trichoptera and plecoptera as indicators in clean water were very abundantly. Occurrence species at each surrey area was 77 species at Mt. Anpyong area and 89 species at Mt. Daedun area, respectively. Mean values of species diversity indices were 3.04 and 2.69, respectively. According to the saprobic system based on the species diversity indices of benthic macroinvertebrates, Mt. Anpyong region are determined as polysaprobic area or ${\beta}-mesosaprobic$ area and Mt. Daedun region are determined as polysaprobic area, $\beta-mesosaprobic$ area or ${\alpha}-mesosaprobic$ area.

  • Hitchhiker insect species from international vessels entering Korea in 2022 were monitored. A total of 947 samples of hitchhiker insects were collected using a simple collection method by hand. Among them, 856 individuals were classified as 374 species of 86 families in 10 orders through integrative analysis with DNA barcoding and morphological examination. The rest 91 individuals were identified only to the family level. As a result of examining the distribution of the 374 species (856 individuals), 38 species (71 individuals) were confirmed as not-distributed species in Korea, including six species (11 individuals) as 'regulated species' listed by the Korean Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency. Of 38 not-distributed species, 10 species were detected multiple times (at least twice). Accordingly, it is necessary to strengthen monitoring of the area around the port of entry along with continuous surveillance to prevent invasion of species detected multiple times. For monitoring alien hitchhiker insect species, this study provided detection information and biological data for alien species.

  • The genus Callophyllis is recorded as six separate species with imprecise species delimitation in Korea. To elucidate the species boundaries of Korean Callophyllis, we performed morphological observations and molecular analyses, and included three Japanese Callophyllis species from the type locality. From the results of molecular analyses using plastid rbcL and mitochondrial COI-5P genes, we confirmed ten Callophyllis species, including five cryptic ones: C. adhaerens, C. adnata, C. crispata, and C. japonica from Korea and Japan; C. hayamensis as an unrecorded species from Korea; C. cartilaginea, C. mollitia, C. repens, C. serratifolia, and C. undulata as new species from Korea. There were no Korean specimens that matched C. adnata or C. crispata from Japan, except Korean C. japonica, which formed a genetic group with the Japanese species. We obtained the interspecific divergences among the five cryptic species as 0.6-4.5% in rbcL and 2.8-8.4% in COI-5P. We recognized that the species diversity of Callophyllis has been underestimated from the northwestern Pacific region. The species boundary of Callophyllis from Korea and Japan will be a cornerstone to revealing the phylogenetic affinity of the genus distributed in both hemispheres of the western Pacific.
