Second, this paper examines the characteristics and the types(phenomenology, grounded theory, ethno-graphic approach, narrative inquiry etc.) of qualitative research methods. Third, this paper discusses (1) fitness between practice in social welfare discipline and qualitative research methods and (2) utilities of qualitative research methods in broadening and deepening knowledge body of Korean social welfare. In discussing the fitness, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods fits with the needs of social welfare discipline regarding broadening and deepening our understandings about social phenomena related to practice, and (2) qualitative research methods fits the needs of social welfare discipline regarding developing endogenous knowledge. In discussing the utilities, this paper focuses that qualitative research methods can be more properly utilized for social welfare research because there are coincidences in basic assumptions and perspectives of both qualitative research methods and social welfare practice. Finally, this paper highlights that 'many ways of knowing' exist in social science and it should be considered more sincerely in the arena of Korean social welfare research in order to more solidly develop the knowledge body of social welfare and practice in Korea.

  • The purpose of this paper is to critically analyze the way of knowledge production in social welfare and to graft feminist epistemology to the discipline of social welfare. To put it more concretely, as analyzing the epistemological and methodological issues appeared in the articles in "orean Journal of Social Welfare", this study examines the meanings of feminist epistemology and its implications to research and practice in social welfare. From its onset, feminist research criticized the 'mainstream' ways of conceptualizing knowledge construction via research conducted upon a positivist epistemological position. Particularly, western feminists have problematized the androcentric bias embedded within the so-called 'social sciences' that we have taken for granted as 'scientific,' 'objective,' and 'neutral,' and attempted to redirect and reformulate the way of knowledge production with new concepts of 'strong objectivity,' 'partial/situated knowledge,' and 'strong reflection.' We believe that the implications of feminist epistemology to enable us to reflect the power relationship between subject and object, I and Other, and the researcher and the researched will contribute to recover the original vision of social welfare as critical theory and liberating practice in social work.

  • This study analyzes the welfare services and spatial composition of social welfare centers that represent complex welfare facilities in order to provide basic information for the spatial planning of social welfare centers. We examined 15 social welfare centers built in the 2000s. A literature review and case study were used as research methodology. The findings are as follow. First, services provided at the surveyed facilities overlapped for seniors and the handicapped. Most social welfare centers provided welfare services for seniors, young children, and teenagers. Second, the proportion of common area, program rooms was high for spatial composition. Third, front access by car was most common (used at nine centers) for the design of the access area and used by. Fourth, shared entry and exit was most common (used at 10 centers) for the design of the entrance. Fifth, regarding space combining style, a mixed style was most frequently used (observed at seven centers) where different private areas for different service users were partly mixed on certain floors. Sixth, a corridor type was most common (used at seven centers) for the design of a corridor space where visitors could walk along the corridor to access individual rooms. Based on the findings, we propose spatial composition of social welfare centers to promote mingling and exchanges among users of different generations.

  • Objectives: Given the importance of social determinants of health in promoting the health of slum residents, this study was conducted with the aim of identifying the main dimensions and components of these determinants. Methods: This scoping review study was conducted according to the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews). A comprehensive search was performed of PubMed, ProQuest, Scopus, and Web of Science for articles conducted from 2010 to the end of 2019. Studies were selected based on inclusion criteria, with a special focus on studies dealing with the social determinants of physical and mental health or illness. Results: Thirty-three articles were selected to extract information on the social determinants of health. After reviewing the articles, 7 main dimensions (housing, socioeconomic status of the family, nutrition, neighborhood characteristics, social support and social capital, occupational factors, and health behaviors) and 87 components were extracted as social determinants of health among slum dwellers. Conclusions: This framework could be used by planners, managers, and policy-makers when making decisions affecting the health of these settlements' residents due to the common characteristics of slums around the world, especially in developing countries.
