  • The new magnetic porcelain materials have been studied by mixing magnetic St-ferrite powders with traditional porcelain materials before forming process. For the maintenance of magnetic characteristics after glaze firing process, the Sr-ferrite grains with the size of 1∼2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were agglomerated as the isotropic granules with the size of 0.5∼2 mm. The high characteristics of magnetic porcelain materials were achieved at the following conditions; isotropic Sr-ferrite granules of 30 wt%, granule size of 1.4∼2 mm, and glaze firing temperature of $1250^{\circ}C$ in air The magnetic porcelain materials indicated the high magnetic properties, such as the remanent flux density of 240 G, the intrinsic coercivity of 3910 Oe, and the surface flux density of 178 G. The extraction properties of the magnetic tea cups were high compared to that of the traditional tea cups.

  • Although titanium-ceramic systems have gained substantial interests in dental prosthetic field, bonding problem between porcelain and titanium has not been solved. Main obstacle in titanium-porcelain bonding is excessive oxidation of titanium during porcelain firing. The effects of several coating materials on the bonding strength of titanium-porcelain system were investigated in this study. RF sputtering and electroplating of platinum significantly increased the bonding strength of porcelain-titanium specimen. However, coatings of Ni-Au, Ir, and ceramics(zirconia and hydroxyapatite) did not showed a significant effect on bonding strength. Platinum might be a promising material for the protective layer of excessive oxidation of titanium during porcelain firing, resulting in increase in the bonding strength.

  • The spaced dentition is a common clinical finding. The careful analysis of clinically spaced dentition is a necessity for effective treatment planning. Spaced dentition often exists in the presence of intact teeth. Therefore, special care should be taken in order to obtain the most successful esthetic effect and to prevent overtreatment as well. The aesthetic restorative dental treatment using the porcelain laminate veneers is getting more popular than the complex orthodontic treatment, and prosthetic solutions that require sacrifice of sound tooth structure. The physical strength of porcelain laminate veneers is not as good as porcelain fused metal crowns, and more researches are needed in the field of bonding between composite cement and porcelain laminate veneer. However, the esthetic results from this unprepared porcelain laminate veneers were satisfactory with Authentic (Ceramay, Germany) pressable ceramic technique and resin cement (Rely X Veneer, 3M). This article deals with 2 cases of unprepared porcelain laminate veneers on anterior teeth.

  • Resin cements are used for cementing indirect esthetic restorations such as resin or porcelain inlays. Because of its limitations in curing of purely light cured resin cements due to attenuation of the curing light by intervening materials, dual cured resin cements are recommended for cementing restorations. The physical properties of resin cements are greatly influenced by the extent to which a resin cures and the degree of cure is an important factor in the success of the inlay. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of porcelain thickness and exposure time on the polymerization of resin cements by measuring the microhardness and the degree of conversion, to investigate the nature of the correlation between two methods mentioned above, and to determine the exposure time needed to harden resin cements through various thickness of porcelain. The degree of resin cure was evaluated by the measurements of microhardness [Vickers Hardness Number(VHN)] and degree of conversion(DC), as determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy(FTIR) on one light cured composite resin [Z-100(Z)] and three dual cured resin cements [Duo cement(D), 3M Resin cement(R), and Dual cement(DA)] which were cured under porcelain discs thickness of 0mm, 1mm, 2mm, 3mm with light exposure time of 40sec, 80sec, 120sec, and regression analysis was performed to determine the correlation between VHN and DC. In addition, to determine the exposure time needed to harden resin cements under various thickness of porcelain discs, the changes of the intensity of light attenuated by 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm thickness of porcelain discs were measured using the curing radiometer. The results were obtained as follows ; 1. The values of microhardness and the degree of conversion of resin cements without intervening porcelain discs were 31~109VHN and 51~63%, respectively. In the microhardness Z was the highest, followed by R, D, DA. In the degree of conversion, D and DA was significantly greater than Z and R(p<0.05). 2. The microhardness and the degree of conversion of the resin cements decreased with increasing thickness of porcelain discs, and increased with increasing exposure time, D and R showed great variation with inlay thickness and exposure time, whereas, DA showed a little variation. 3. The intensity of light through 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm porcelain inlays decreased by 0.43, 0.25, and 0.14 times compared to direct illumination, and the respective needed exposure times are 53 sec, 70 sec, and 93 sec. In D and R, 40 sec of light irradiation through 2mm porcelain disc and 80 sec of light irradiation through 3mm porcelain disc were not enough to complete curing. 4. The microhardness and the degree of conversion of the resin cements showed a positive correlationship(R=0.791~0.965) in the order of R, D, Z, DA. As the thickness of porcelain discs increased, the decreasing pattern of microhardness was different from that of the degree of conversion, however.

  • Orthodontic brackets often need to be bonded to porcelain such as porcelain fused to metal crowns and porcelain jacket crowns. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usability of direct bonding system on porcelain teeth by measuring shear bond strength according to various conditions and observing adhesive failure patterns. The specimens, 20 maxillary premolars and 80 porcelain teeth that were produced by duplication of the labial surface of a maxillary first premolar were used and randomly divided into four groups of twenty teeth each. The 5 different preparation procedures tested: (1) application of 37% phosphoric acid on natural teeth, (2) sandblasting on porcelain surfaces, (3) sandblasting and application of 9.6% hydrofluoric acid on porcelain surfaces, (4) sandblasting and application of silane on porcelain surface, (5) sandblasting and application of 9.6% hydrofluoric acid and silane on porcelain surfaces. The metal brackets were bonded with Transbond $XT^{(R)}$ bonding material. The shear bond strength was tested by the micro universal testing machine(Kyung-Sung, Korea) and the amount of residual adhesive on the tooth surface after debonding was examined by stereoscope and assessed with an adhesive remnant index. The results of this study suggest that the direct bonding system on porcelain teeth with sandblasting, HF and porcelain primer is clinically useful.

  • Flexion of a metal/ceramic fixed partial denture(EPD) frameworks under function can cause fracture of porcelain or deterioration of the cement seal. This study evaluated the flexion characteristics of three-unit mandibular FPD frameworks, repacing the second pre-molar under compressive load(200g, 400g). Testing was accompished with real-time holographic interferometry, using 6 porcelain fused-to metal frameworks. Tested alloys were non-precious alloy(Heracles, Holland), semi-precious alloy(Degudent U, Germany) and precious alloy(Degudent H, Germany). Changes of the fringe patterns according to the heat treatment(porcelain firing cycle), various loads(200g, 400g), occlusal forms(occlusal porcelain veneering, facial porcelain veneering), various alloys and post-soldering units were compared. Dental study model(Nissan dental products, Inc. D51DP-500A, Japan) and six 3-unit metal/ceramic fixed partial denture frameworks were used as experimental materials. 36 holograms were taken on fixed dental study model by using the 10mW He-Ne laser and real-time holographic interferometry. On the basis of this study, the following conclusions can be drawn : 1. In the frameworks for facial porcelain veneering, the semi-precious alloy framework was least deformed and precious alloy framework, non-precious alloy framework orderly before heat treatment, and the deformation was not shown great difference among three alloys after heat treatment and post-soldering. 2. In the frameworks for occlusal porcelain veneering, the precious alloy framework was greatest deformed and the deformation was not difference between semi-precious alloy framework and non-precious alloy framework before, after heat treatment, and the deformation was not shown great difference among three alloys after post soldering. 3. In the non-precious alloy frameworks for facial porcelain veneering and occlusal porcelain veneering, the deformation was greatly decreased after heat treatment and conversely increased after post-soldering. 4. In the semi-precious alloy framework for facial porcelain veneering, the deformation was not detectable after heat treatment and increased after post-solder. And in the frame-work for occlusal porcelain veneering, the deformation was slightly decreased after heat treatment and increased after post-soldering. 5. In the precious alloy framework for facial porcelain veneering, the deformation was greatly decreased after heat treatment and increased after post-soldering, And in the framework for occlusal porcelain veneering, the deformation was greatly decreased after heat treatment and decreased after post-soldering.

  • Pressable ceramics have many applications in the field of dental industry because of their excellent esthetic, compressive strength, chemical durability. Despite these attractive characteristics, they have not been widely used since they are very brittle and extremly sensitive to porcelain. In this study, the fabrication of pressable dental porcelain ($SiO_2-Al_2O_3-K_2O-Na_2O$) as a function of contents of $Al_2O_3,\;BaO\;and\;ZrO_2$ were investigated. And then compressive strength, Vickers hardness, density and thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) tests have been carried out to evaluate properties of pressable dental porcelain fabricated. The property of pressable dental porcelain fabricated by adding of 15%$Al_2O_3$ and 2%BaO contents was closely approximated to that of natural tooth.

  • Porcelain with high thermal shock resistance was successfully fabricated by a lithium solution infiltration method with a lithium hydroxide solution. Lithium hydroxide solutions having various lithium concentrations were infiltrated into pre-sintered porcelain bodies. The porcelain sample infiltrated by the 9 wt% lithium solution and heat treated at $1250^{\circ}C$ for 1 h showed a low thermal expansion coefficient of $1.0{\times}10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ with excellent thermal shock resistance. The highly thermally resistant porcelain had a well-developed ${\beta}$-spodumene phase with the general phases observed in porcelain. Furthermore, the porcelain showed a denser structure of $2.41g/cm^3$ sintering density and excellent whiteness in comparison with commercial thermally resistible porcelains. The lithium hydroxide in the samples readily reacted with moisture, and liquid phase reactants were formed during the fabrication process. In the case of an excess amount of lithium in the sample body, the lithium reactants were forced to the surface and re-crystallized at the surface, leaving large pores beneath the surface. These phenomena resulted in an irregular structure in the surface area and led to cracking in samples subjected to a thermal shock test.

  • This study examined similarity between white porcelain models and dress silhouette of women painted in genre painting in late Joseon period, and found that gourd bottles that are one of main porcelain styles are very similar with dress silhouette of women presented in genre painting in Joseon period; that is, bottle necks of gourd bottles and women's waist, voluminous bottles and erotically full hips, the length of skirts which showed underwear dress and height of porcelain's bottom, waist panel winding slim waist and wide edge of porcelain's mouth. As images are personal mental process of potters who were not socially controlled, they used dress as an indirect means of women's bodies for the subjects of images that are obtained through direct and indirect experiences of the persons who perceive. It indicates that they intended to make their ceramic works express women's dressing style through images of porcelain's models. Such images were sensual, but not superficial. It is suggested that they were influenced by the society which considered ethical experimental mind and practicality of the governing class of that time who enjoyed it metaphorically, but not impudent.
