  • A benthic faunal survey of the Hangang Estuary located in the northwestern part of South Korea was performed in October 2004. A total of 11 species identified, which were comprised of two species of molluscs bivalves (Limnoperna fortunei and Corbicula felnouilliana) in two families, two species of annelids polychaetes (Neanthes japonica and Nephtys caeca) in two families, and seven species of decapods (Palaemon carinicauda, P. annandalei, P. modestus, Ilyoplax deschampsi, Eriocheir sinensis, Eriocheir leptognathus and Sesarma dehaani) in four families. Four of the 11 species in six families, Limnoperna fortunei, Neanthes japonica, Nephtys caeca and Palaemon modestus, were newly found in this study area. Eleven species were presently listed with brief ecological remarks.

  • Macrozoobenthic community structure was studied on the mud-tidalflat around Mokpo coastal area, Korea, from September 1995 to May 1996. Ten sampling stations were chosen along the 1km transect with a 100 m intervals. Triple macrozoobenthos sampling were conducted with a stainless box core sampler (size $13{\times}22{\times}30$ cm) at each station on the seasonal basis. A total of 119 species of macrobenthos was sampled with a mean density 2,357 $ind./m^2$ and biomass of 180. 94 $g/m^2$ during the study period. Of these species, there were 51 species of mollusce (43%), 36 of crustaceans (30%), 27 of polychaetes (23%). Molluscs were density-dominant faunal group with a mean density of 1,804 $ind./m^2$, comprising of 75% of the total density of the benthic animals. It was followed by polychaetes with 347 $ind./m^2$ (15% of the total density). Molluscs were biomass-dominant faunal group with a mean biomass of 147.51 $g/m^2$ (82% of the total biomass). The number of species, abundance and biomass showed increasing trends toward the lower intertidal stations from the higher stations. Major dominant species were Musculista senhousia (bivalve), Capitellidae spp. (polychaetes) with a density of 1,640 $ind./m^2$ and 179 $ind./m^2$ , respectively. The density of M. senhousia was more than 63% of the total density of benthic organism on the tidal area. Small gastropod Cerithideopsilla umumriensis was another dominant epifaunal species between st.1 and 2 with a mean density of 100 $ind./m^2$. Cluster analysis showed that the benthic community could be divided into three stational groups, that is, upper, middle and lower groups by the exposure duration.

  • The Korean nudibranch faunal study has been conducted since 2011 and five species including Dermatobranchus otome Baba, 1992, Mexichromis festiva (Angas, 1864), Noumea nivalis Baba, 1937, Hoplodoris armata (Baba, 1993), and Okenia hiroi (Baba, 1938) were newly reported with re-descriptions and figures. Also, Noumea purpurea Baba, 1949 was re-described with illustrations because previous records for this species were given without a description. Two congeneric species in the genus Noumea could be distinguished by ground color, dorsal markings, color of the mantle edge and gills, and mantle and dorsal marking. In addition, mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) sequences of five species were provided for further molecular identification study. Consequently, a total of 43 species have been reported for the Korean nudibranch fauna.

  • Dokdo, which is located in the middle of the East Sea, is a small island tilth a total area of 0.186 $\textrm{km}^2$. However, this small island, with its mild oceanic climate, has rich bio-resources and picturesque natural surroundings. Dokdo in the crystaline waters and In the central area of the deep sea is a treasury of algaes (sea oak, sea mustard, gulf weed, laver, agar-agar, etc.), molluscs (squid, ear shell, conch, etc.) and fishes (Alaska pollack, anchovy, saucy, herring, etc.). On the other hand, there are a lot of grasses and various kinds of grasses on the land of Dokdo. And a lot of back-tailed gulls (about 20,000 Individuals) live on this island. There have been disputes on the sovereignty over Dokdo between Korea and Japan. Japan has claimed sovereignty over Dokdo since Japan incorporated the island into Japanese territory in 1905 when it occupied the Korean Peninsula by force. Korea governed Dokdo not only before 1905 but also after its liberation in 1945. The Korean government, while heavily financing building facilities like pleas and quays, is endeavoring to preserve the natural surroundings of this island.

  • Chejudo, because of its location off the south coast of the Korean peninsula, has a varied marine mollusk fauna. As a preliminary step in an attempt to enumerate and study the mollusks of the island, a field trip was made by the authors to the Songsan Ilchulbang area on february 20, 2001. The purpose of the trip was to survey the mollusk fauna of the shoreline west of Songsan. (omitted)

  • In order to develop an indoor assistive mobility equipment, we paid attention to the mechanism of locomotion in a snail, or a terrestrial gastropod molluscs. It is known that the snail moves by propagation of a pedal wave generating on a pedal surface of the snail and a pedal locomotion has flexibility far ground condition. An air mattress with a function of a pedal-like locomotion mechanism was developed and the performance of the pedal locomotory air mattress as mobility equipment was discussed.

  • The present study examines the potential involvement of Biomphalaria glabrata, a known molluscan intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni, in the life cycle of Echinostoma cinetorchis, one of the echinostomes that are ubiquitous parasites of vertebrates and are of importance in human and veterinary medicine and wildlife diseases. Echinostomes can be maintained easily and inexpensively in the laboratory and provide good models for biological research ranging from the molecular to the organismal. In the present study, no echinostome cercariae were released from the B. glabrata experimentally infected with E. cinetorchis miracidia, whereas all the Biomphalaria snails infected with E. cinetorchis cercariae were found to be infected with the metacercariae. This is the first report that B. glabrata can experimentally serve as the second intermediate host of E. cinetorchis, and that it might be employed as one of the target molluscs for establishing a biological research model with E. cinetorchis in the laboratory.
