  • Stretch-activated ion channel that is open by mechanical stress applied on the cell membrane is one of the classes of ion channels. Other than stretch-activated channel itself, it has been also reported that a variety of ion channels could be modulated by a mechanical cell stretch.(omitted)

  • Shiga toxin (stx) producing Escherichia coli (STEC) causes various clinical signs in animal and human. In this study, 255 fecal samples from calves showing diarrhea were collected from cattle farms in Chonnam province during the period from January 2005 to July 2005. Twenty six STEC (10%) were isolated from 255 fecal samples by PCR. The isolates displayed three different stx combinations (stx1 [69%], stx1 and stx2 [15%], and stx2 [38%]). The isolates were further studied for virulence associated genes and antimicrobial resistance to define the virulence properties. Intimin (eaeA), enterohemolysin (hlyA), and lipopolysaccharide (rfbE) virulence genes were detected in 6 (23%), 7 (26%), and 1 (3.8%) of the isolates, respectively, by PCR. One isolate possessing rfbE gene was typed as E. coli 0157 : H7 by agglutination test with O and H antisera. All 26 isolates showed susceptibility to amikacin (100%) and the majority of isolates showed high susceptibility to gentamicin (88.5%) and chloramphenicol (73.1%). But all isolates were resistant to penicillin. These results may provide the basic knowledge to establish strategies for the treatment and prevention of enteric disease in calves.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to report the improvement of complex Korean Medicine treatment for patients with rotator cuff injuries and determine the clinical improvement by number of damaged lesion. Methods Forty-one patients who diagnosed with rotator cuff injury were included in the retrospective study. Patients were treated with acupuncture, electroacupuncture and pharmacopuncture. Clinical outcomes were assessed using Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), Shoulder Pain and Disablity Index (SPADI) and EuroQol-5 Dimension Index (EQ-5D Index). Results Both NRS and SPADI scores were significantly reduced after treatment (p<0.01), but EQ-5D for assessing quality of life and clinical improvement by number of damaged lesion were no significant improvement (p>0.05). Conclusions These results show that patients with rotator cuff injuries could gain improvement from complex Korean Medicine. Further research is required to confirm the effectiveness of Korean Medicine treatment.

  • Although the incidence of tuberculosis has been decreased due to new anti-tuberculous agents, improved socioeconomic status and development of multimodal preventive methods, in recent that is increased due to low vaccination rate and appearance of multidrug resistence organism. And the incidence of pyogenic shoulder joint arthritis is increasing due to frequent injection therapy as primary treatment. We have managed the mixed shoulder joint arthritis-pyogenic and tuberculous-with arthroscopic debridement and antituberculous medication successfully and then we report this case with relevant literatures.

  • Phenypropanolamine (PPA) is a sympathetic amine used in over-the-counter cold remedies and weight-control preparations. The side effects are hypertension, dysrhythmias, stroke, etc. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is taking steps to remove PPA from all drug products and has requested that all drug companies discontinue marketing products containg PPA due to high risk of hemorrhage stroke. But, in Korea now, patinets take products containg PPA with over the counter. We report here the case of PPA induced myocardial injury in a young woman who takes overdose for suicide.

  • Basically all cells have the recovery mechanisms from the shift of intracellular pH (pHi). Many mechanisms were found and characterized. Generally the recovery mechanisms from acidosis are Na$\^$+/-dependent, such as Na$\^$+/-H$\^$+/ exchange and Na$\^$+/-HCO$_3$-symport. The recovery mechanism from alkalosis are Cl-dependent, such as Cl$\^$-/-HCO$_3$-exchange and Cal$\^$-/-OH$\^$-/ exchange.(omitted)
