  • This paper introduces a new linguistic-focused approach for sentiment analysis (SA) of Korean. In order to overcome shortcomings of previous works that focused mainly on statistical methods, we made effective use of various linguistic features reflecting the nature of Korean. These features include contextual shifters, modal affixes, and the morphological dependency of chunk structures. Moreover, in order to eschew possible confusion caused by ambiguous words and to improve the results of SA, we also proposed simple adjustment methods of word senses using KOLON ontology mapping information. Through experiments we contend that effective use of linguistic features and ontological information can improve the results of sentiment analysis of Korean.

  • In this study, we investigate ways that focus is realized in English utterances produced by native speakers of English and Korean learners. As compared to the previous studies which deal mainly with functional aspects of focus as a part of intonational structure, we attempt to provide more quantitative information on F0 and discover the extent to which Korean learners distinguish focus types in their English utterance production. On the test sentences designed to be disambiguated by correct focus realization, it is found that, even advanced-level Korean learners, unlike native speakers, hardly employ F0 to clarify the specific meaning of English utterances.

  • The goal of quantitative linguistics is to show the quantitative behavior of linguistic units. There are several studies which examine the frequency of Korean phonemes, which are important in comprehending the internal function of the linguistic units. However, the frequency information, from the pure phonological level without any consideration of rhythmic group, cannot adequately represent linguistic phenomena. Therefore, to provide the effective information, the phonological transcription must be carried out on the level of rhythmic group. In this paper, we made the transcription to analyze Korean phonology. We were not satisfied with merely investigating the frequencies of the phonemes, but also examined whether the distribution of Korean phonemes show the binomial distribution within linguistic constraints.

  • Vowel raising in Korean has been primarily treated as a phonological, categorical change. This study aims to show how the Korean connective suffix {-go} is realized in various environments, and propose a principle of vowel raising based on both acoustic and perceptual data. To that end, we used a corpus of spoken Korean to analyze the types of syntactic constructions, the realization of prosodic boundaries (IP and PP), and the types of boundary tone associated with {-go}. It was found that the vowel tends to be raised most frequently in utterance-final position, while in utterance-medial position the vowel was raised more when the syntactic and prosodic distance between {-go} and the following constituent was smaller. The results for boundary tone also showed a correlation between vowel raising and the discourse function of the boundary tone. In conclusion, we propose that vowel raising is not simply an optional phenomenon, but rather a type of phonetic reduction related to the comprehension of the following constituent.

  • The purpose of this paper is to build a semantic networks of the 'cooking class' verb (based on 'CoreNet' of KAIST). This proceedings needs to adjust the concept classification. Then sub-categories of [Cooking] and [Foodstuff] hierarchy of CoreNet was adjusted for the construction of verb semantic networks. For the building a semantic networks, each meaning of 'Cooking verbs' of Korean has to be analyzed. This paper focused on the Korean 'heating' verbs and 'non-heating'verbs. Case frame structure and argument information were inserted for the describing verb information. This paper use a Propege 3.3 as a tool for building "cooking verb" semantic networks. Each verb and noun was inserted into it's class, and connected by property relation marker 'HasThemeAs', 'IsMaterialOf'.

  • This paper aims at proposing issues of breath and memory in speech based on the quantitative analysis of breath groups and pause units in Korean. As a human being, we have two kinds of limitations on continuing speech; breath and memory. The prosodic structure and temporal structure of spontaneous speech data from six speakers were closely examined. One of the main findings of the present study is that the prosodic structure and temporal structure of Korean appears to reflect the breath and memory problems in speech.

  • This study aims to propose an automatic method of detecting vowel variation in the Korean dialects of Gyeong-sang and Jeol-la. The method is based on error patterns extracted using phone recognition. Canonical and recognized phone sequences are compared, and statistical analyses distinguish the vowels appearing in both dialects, the dialect-common vowels, and the vowels with high mismatch rates for each dialect. The dialect-common vowels show monophthongization of diphthongs. The vowels unique to the dialects are /we/ to [e] and /ʌ/ to [ɰ] for Gyeong-sang dialect, and /ɰi/ to [ɯ] in Jeol-la dialect. These results corroborate previous dialectology reports regarding phonetic realization of the Korean dialects. The current method provides a possibility of automatic explanation of the dialect patterns.

  • This paper describes Korean Nominal Bank, a project that provides argument structure for instances of the predicative nouns in the Sejong parsed Corpus. We use the language resources of the Sejong project, so that the same set of data is annotated with more and more levels of annotation, since a new type of a language resource building project could bring new information of separate and isolated processing. We have based on the annotation scheme based on the Sejong electronic dictionary, semantically tagged corpus, and syntactically analyzed corpus. Our work also involves the deep linguistic knowledge of syntaxsemantic interface in general. We consider the semantic theories including the Frame Semantics of Fillmore (1976), argument structure of Grimshaw (1990) and argument alternation of Levin (1993), and Levin and Rappaport Hovav (2005). Various syntactic theories should be needed in explaining various sentence types, including empty categories, raising, left (or right dislocation). We also need an explanation on the idiosyncratic lexical feature, such as collocation and etc.

  • In this paper, we address two questions concerning negative imperatives in Korean: (i) what is the morpho-syntactic nature of mal in negative imperatives\ulcorner; and (ii) why is it impossible to form negative imperatives with short negation an\ulcorner We will argue that the clause structure of imperatives include a projection of deontic modality and a projection of imperative operator encoding illocutionary force, and that oaf is a lexicalization of long negation and deontic modality. We then propose that a negative imperative with short negation is ruled out because such construction maps onto incoherent interpretation which can be spelled out as I direct you to bring about a negative state or a negative event.

  • This paper analyzed the effect of using a content-based English textbook in teaching English to Korean college students. The textbook reflected the recent trend in EFL/ESL development that subject matters should be taught as part of the language instruction. The analysis of the questionnaire survey conducted to college students at the end of the semester revealed an encouraging result that this new type of ELT college textbook is effective in helping Korean college students prepare for learning their subject areas through English. Based on this positive outcome, a suggestion is made that the current general purpose college English teaching curriculum be shifted toward a content-based specific purpose type to accommodate the increasing demand of learning subject areas through English in colleges in Korea.
