The Effects of Color Hue-Tone on Recognizing Emotions of Characters in the Film, Les Misérables

  • This study investigated whether people experience a correspondence between color hue-tone and the main characters' emotions in the 2012 British musical drama film, Les $Mis\grave{e}rables$ through three practical experiments. Six screen images, which represent the characters' different emotions (Parrot's six primary types including love, joy, surprise, anger, sadness, and fear) were selected. For each screen image, participants were asked to judge the degree of the character's dominant emotions evoked from 17 varied screen images, which consisted of original chromatic and achromatized images as well as 15 color-filtered images (5 hues X 3 tones of the IRI color system). These tasks revealed that a chromatic color scheme is more effective to deliver the characters' positive emotions (i.e. love and joy) than an achromatic one. In addition, they proved that the hue and tone dimensions partially influence the relationships between the character emotions and colors.

Examination of explicit and implicit emotions and relationship with the intention to support breastfeeding in public: a descriptive study

  • Objectives: Current social norms in the United States do not favor breastfeeding in public. This study examined associations between college students' explicit and implicit emotions of breastfeeding in public and their intention to support public breastfeeding. Methods: Twenty-two student participants viewed images of a breastfeeding woman with a fully-covered, fully-exposed, or partially-exposed breast in a public setting. After viewing each image, participants' explicit emotions (self-reported) of the image were measured using a questionnaire and their implicit emotions (facial expression) were measured using FaceReader technology. We examined if a relationship exists between both emotions [toward images] and intention to support breastfeeding in public using correlation techniques. We determined the relative influence of two emotions on the intention to support breastfeeding in public using regression analyses. Results: The nursing images depicting a fully-covered breast (r = 0.425, P = 0.049 vs. r = 0.271, P = 0.222) and fully-exposed breast (r = 0.437, P = 0.042 vs. r = 0.317, P = 0.150) had stronger associations with explicit emotions and intention to support breastfeeding in public compared to implicit emotions and intention. Breastfeeding knowledge was associated with a positive explicit emotion for images with partial- (β = 0.60, P = 0.003) and full-breast exposure (β = 0.65, P = 0.002). Conclusions: Explicit emotions appear to drive stated intentions to support public breastfeeding. Further research is needed to understand the disconnect between explicit and implicit emotions, the factors that influence these emotions, and whether stated intentions lead to consistent behavior.

Emotion Recognition using Short-Term Multi-Physiological Signals

  • Technology for emotion recognition is an essential part of human personality analysis. To define human personality characteristics, the existing method used the survey method. However, there are many cases where communication cannot make without considering emotions. Hence, emotional recognition technology is an essential element for communication but has also been adopted in many other fields. A person's emotions are revealed in various ways, typically including facial, speech, and biometric responses. Therefore, various methods can recognize emotions, e.g., images, voice signals, and physiological signals. Physiological signals are measured with biological sensors and analyzed to identify emotions. This study employed two sensor types. First, the existing method, the binary arousal-valence method, was subdivided into four levels to classify emotions in more detail. Then, based on the current techniques classified as High/Low, the model was further subdivided into multi-levels. Finally, signal characteristics were extracted using a 1-D Convolution Neural Network (CNN) and classified sixteen feelings. Although CNN was used to learn images in 2D, sensor data in 1D was used as the input in this paper. Finally, the proposed emotional recognition system was evaluated by measuring actual sensors.

  • This study aims to clarify differences among the responses of users depending on variations in audio-visual landscape elements used to create amenities in residential areas. For the purpose, a laboratory experiment was performed to evaluate the emotions of subjects. As a result of subjective evaluation, it was found that the emotions of subjects were more significantly promoted in providing both sounds and images at the same time, than in providing images alone. In addition, as a result of comparing the variables of relativistic energy alpha waves have by measuring their brain waves, it was seen that alpha waves increased when providing harmonious sound sources with images, except for specific sound sources. Thus, it is considered that provision of sound sources capable of promoting human emotions can contribute greatly to improving the value of space for the sake of comfortable housing environment.

한국인과 외국인 식품 종사자가 인식하는 한식 이미지와 감정에 대한 비교연구 (Comparative Analysis of Korean Food Images and Emotions Recognized by Korean and Foreign Food Workers)

  • The image and emotions associated with Korean food were investigated in 24 food workers (12 Koreans and 12 foreigners) living in Korea. There are a total of 22 terms for the image of Korean food of Koreans and foreigners, including 7 common words, and a total of 33 terms for emotion, including 10 common words. Differences in the images and emotions associated with the perception of Korean food according to the characteristics of the country and region and Korean food experience were established in foreign food workers. In the images of Korean food, Koreans mentioned 'jeong, sharing, balanced, Korean table setting, seasonal (seasonality), yearning, trust', whereas foreigners mentioned 'red, spicy, distinctive flavor, repulsion, sweet, non-salty, tradition and history, and unfamiliarity'. In Korean food emotions, Koreans were "relaxing, friendly, maternal, hospitable, nostalgic, exotic, clean, trust, delicious, touching, and free", whereas foreigners were "happy, appealing, enthusiastic, excited, uncomfortable, worried, adventurous, nervous, joyful, fusion, food-cultural, and amazing".

인스타그램 이미지와 텍스트 분석을 통한 사용자 감정 분류 (A User Sentiment Classification Using Instagram image and text Analysis)

  • 최근 스마트폰과 태블릿 PC 등의 스마트 기기들의 발전으로 인해 SNS(Social Network Service) 사용자가 증가함에 따라 SNS 정보를 이용한 사용자 감정 분류 방법에 대한 기법들이 활발하게 연구되고 있다. 사용자 감정 분류는 SNS 게시글의 텍스트, 이미지 등을 이용하여 감정을 분류하는 것을 말한다. 본 논문에서는 텍스트에서 대표 형용사를 추출하고 이미지에서 Canny 알고리즘과 삼각함수를 이용해 대표 도형에 대한 값을 추출하여 사용자의 감정을 분류하는 방법을 제안한다. 텍스트에서 추출한 대표 형용사는 텍스트에서 추출한 형용사 중에 빈도수가 가장 높은 형용사로 선정하였으며, 영어 감정어휘 사전인 SentiWordNet을 이용하여 긍정-부정의 수치를 측정했다. 이미지에서 추출되는 도형에서 삼각형, 사각형, 원중에 추출되는 도형을 대표 도형으로 선정했으며, 대표 도형의 종류와 기울기에 따라 쾌-불쾌 수치를 측정하여 사용자의 감정을 분류했다. 최종적으로 Plutchik의 감정 바퀴를 긍정-부정과 쾌-불쾌의 수치를 나타내는 x축과 y축을 갖는 좌표평면으로 재정의하고 대표 형용사와 대표 도형의 값을 재정의한 Plutchik의 감정 바퀴의 좌표 평면에 나타내어 사용자의 감정 분류를 수행한다.

  • 최근 소셜 네트워크 서비스 사용자들은 게시글을 통해 사회적 이슈 및 관심 콘텐츠들에 대한 자신의 감정을 적극적으로 표현하고 공유한다. 그 결과 소셜 네트워크에서의 개인 및 특정 집단의 감정 공유는 빠르게 확산된다. 그러므로 사용자들의 게시글에 대한 감정 분석 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 그렇지만 다양한 감정이 포함된 게시글에 대한 감정 분석 연구가 미흡하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 해시태그와 이미지를 이용한 인스타그램 게시글의 대표 감정 분석 방법을 제안한다. 이를 통해 사용자 게시글에 포함된 다종의 리소스를 활용하여 다중의 감정으로부터 대표 감정을 추출할 수 있으며 66.4%의 정확도와 81.7%의 재현율로 기존 방법보다 감정 분류 성능 향상을 보인다.

Mood Suggestion Framework Using Emotional Relaxation Matching Based on Emotion Meshes

  • In this paper, we propose a framework that automatically suggests emotion using emotion analysis method based on facial expression change. We use Microsoft's Emotion API to calculate and analyze emotion values in facial expressions to recognize emotions that change over time. In this step, we use standard deviations based on peak analysis to measure and classify emotional changes. The difference between the classified emotion and the normal emotion is calculated, and the difference is used to recognize the emotion abnormality. We match user's emotions to relatively relaxed emotions using histograms and emotional meshes. As a result, we provide relaxed emotions to users through images. The proposed framework helps users to recognize emotional changes easily and to train their emotions through emotional relaxation.

이용자 반응 기반 이미지 감정 접근점 확장에 관한 연구 (An Expansion of Affective Image Access Points Based on Users' Response on Image)

  • 컴퓨터 정보기술의 발전과 함께 감정 기반 컴퓨팅이 다양한 분야에 빠르게 발전하여 확산되고 있다. 감정 기반 컴퓨팅의 지속적인 발전을 위해서는 이미지와 같은 멀티미디어의 콘텐츠의 감정 기반 색인과 검색이 필수적이다. 그러나 감정과 같은 추상적 개념은 주관적이며 이미지의 하위 수준 속성에서 유추하는데 한계가 있기 때문에 감정 색인은 통상적으로 난제로 여겨진다. 본 연구는 감정 색인 개선을 위해서 이미지에 대하여 이용자가 느끼는 감정 반응을 활용하여 이미지를 감정으로 접근하는데 있어서 확장된 접근점을 제공하는 방안을 고찰하였다. 이를 위하여 유로피아나 DB에서 사랑, 행복, 분노, 공포, 슬픔의 5가지 기본 감정을 표현한 이미지 15건을 선정하여 20명의 연구 참여자에게 보여주고 용어를 수집하였다. 이용자의 이미지 반응에서 수집한 용어는 정련 후 총 399건의 고유한 용어로 나타났다. 고유한 399건의 용어는 전체 1,093회 출현하였으며, 동시출현단어분석을 수행하여 상위 출현한 용어 네트워크를 구현하였다. 동시출현단어분석 기반의 네트워크를 통해서 기본 감정 용어와 함께 빈번하게 출현하는 용어를 규명하였다. 이를 통해 기본 감정용어와 함께 확장되어 제시될 수 있는 용어는 형용사, 동작/행위 표현 등 다양하게 나타났다.
